Welcome to TomCoyote.org!

Please download and run Spybot-Search&Destroy and Ad-Aware; they are the standard programs for finding and cleaning malware off your system. Here are links to both programs, and instructions for their use.

Get Spybot - Search & Destroy from Spybot Search and Destroy
(This is the NEW Version 1.4)
Get AdAware SE Personal from Lavasoft
(This is the NEW Build 1.6)

Download and install these programs if you don't already have them. If you do have them, make sure they are UPDATED AND CONFIGURED AS DESCRIBED here:

Configure Adaware

Configure Spybot

Reboot after running each program.

Try this online virus scan:

Trend-Micro Housecall

Choose "fix" or "clean".

Let it remove any infections found.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new Hijack This! log file into this thread. :)
Ok, I loaded and ran the newest Spybot, Adaware, and I ran the virus scan. Here' the new Hijack log:

Hi Micah,

Thanks for all of the help so far. I could not find the exp.exe file (even after turning on hidden files) and was unable to delete the khdlv1.dll file, but I was successful with everything else. Although I did notice that the 020 - entry returned after the reboot. Here's the new log:

Let's get rid of the "Look2Me" infection.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.

l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing .

This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, Notepad will open with a log. Copy/paste the contents of that log into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!
Hi again Micah, First let me say thanks for all of the help so far. The pc is so much better already. When I ran this program I did get a couple of error messages before I got my log. Not sure if they are anything to worry about, but here's what the message said (i got this twice): ————————————————————————— |||| 16 Bit MS-DOS Subsystem ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| ————————————————————————— | c:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe | | c:\Windows\System32\autoexec.NT. The system file is not | | suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows | | applications. Choose Close to terminate the application. | | | | ——————— —————— | | | Close | | Ignore | | | ——————— —————— | | | —————————————————————————- I chose close both times, but the application seemed to run. Oh yeah!

The log just confirms that it's "Look2Me" alright.

Need to fix that error first. Here are a few links to do that at:

XP Fix - http://www.visualtour.com/downloads/

Scroll down to get XP Fix
http://www.tech-forums.net/computer/topic/29806.html auotexec.nt

(I got that from this post).

Then continue with the fix as posted below.

DON'T DO THE LOOK2ME FIX IN THAT LINK. I was just showing how it is relevant, and helped that person. Do what I have posted below after fixing your "16 Bit MS-DOS Subsystem" error with one of those two links I posted.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing , then press any key to reboot your computer.

After the reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!
Hey Micah,

Ok, that's all done. Looks like it all went as expected. Here's the LM2 log:

Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [arfastx] c:\windows\system32\arfastx.exe

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Find and delete all of these noted file(s)/folder(s) you can:

c:\windows\system32\asuo.exe <— file

c:\windows\system32\arfastx.exe <— file

Then delete ALL files in these FOLDERS.

DON'T DELETE THE FOLDERS, JUST ALL THE FILES INSIDE THEM!

C:\Windows\Temp <— FOLDER

C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp <— FOLDER

C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp <— FOLDER

C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files <— FOLDER

Looks like you're "good to go", all the baddies have packed up, and left town!!!!

I do see one thing that concerns me:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [P2P Networking] C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe /AUTOSTART

If you're sharing files, you're also sharing any virii or trojans in them as well.

Ask yourself, "Is it really worth the risk?".

If you want that program gone, but can't find an "uninstall", post back and we'll kill it.

GOD bless!!!
M68 :)

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.

Hello again Micah, Thanks again for all of the help. The PC seems to be itself again. When you're talking about sharing, you're talking about the P2P stuff right? Or does this go for Windows sharing as well? I'll discuss with my son, and hope to talk him into removing it. Looks like it is uninstallable. Windows griped when I was in control panel that i'd have to uninstall several other apps, if I removed P2P. Anyway, thanks again. Maybe I'll work with you again. Today I requested to be considered for the right to help others on this forum. I'd like to learn more about how this is done. God Bless you too (Romans 8:28) b
I was referring to the peer-to-peer sharing.

It is always possible that you could download a new virus that your antivirus has no cure or fix for (yet).

When you share files with others, you're only as secure as your antivirus keeps you.

Jesus said,"Thou shalt not put the LORD thy GOD to the test.".

When it comes to PC's, it's "Thou shalt not put thy antivirus to the test (unnecessarily)".

Personally, I wouldn't join a file sharing network for love nor money. I value my PC more than that.
:)
Hey Micah, Received and understood. I'll yank that beast off of there and rest (a little bit) easier. I think we can close this out. If I get stuck uninstalling I can post a new thread. It's been great working with you. It's refreshing to find someone open about their faith in Christ out here in cyberspace. Thanks and kind regards, B
