I've done all I know to do; virus check, spysweeper, adaware, msconfig, etc. Still my PC gets slower and more unstable. Can anybody see what I'm missing?

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following,

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {8E718888-423F-11D2-876E-00A0C9082467} - (no file)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Click start > run > type in msconfig > click the start up tab and make sure all the boxes have a check mark.

Under the general tab there should be a green check mark in Normal start up.
Then post another log from hijackthis.

I did what you asked. In msconfig, I had reduced the number of startups in an effort to make my PC run better. I only had ScanRegistry, TaskMonitor, SystemTray, SpySweeper, SchedulingAgent, *StateMgr, McAfeeVirusScanService, KB801711, and LoadPowerProfile starting up. Per your request, I added the other 11 items that I had previously unchecked. On the General tab, "Normal startup" was selected with a radio button, but no green check. Otherwise, here is my new HJT log. Thanks for your help!

Thanks for looking at my log. My toubles still remain, and worse than ever. Incredibly slow, the mouse can barely move, it took nearly 90 minutes just to run SpyBot today. Freezes, crashes, boot troubles, you name it. This is an ME machine. Any ideas on what might be bogging it down so badly? I'm out of ideas. Thanks for any suggestions you might provide.

You have high CPU Usage which can be caused by the Blaster, Nachi or Welchia trojan. To remove this and several other trojans there is a tool which needs to be downloaded and run.

1. Please download Stinger and save it to your desktop

2. Double-click on the stinger.exe file and open the tool

3. Choose your entire hard drive to scan.

4. Choose Scan Now

5. Stinger will fix anything that it finds

6. Click the File menu and select Save report to file

7. Post the log file results here in this thread.

Here's the Stinger log. It took over 2 hours to run, and crashed my computer 3 times, but finally completed with no apparant findings. Could there be something corrupt with one of my WinME files? How would I check? It acts like all the CPU is being sucked up by some process, but I see nothing out of the ordinary in the process list or the HJT logs. Would there be any risk/reward to trying to reinstall ME? I've heard rumors that it's a BAD idea, and can't afford to make things any worse. I'm just at a total loss. Any and all suggestions you might have from your experience are welcome! McAfee AVERT Stinger Version 2.5.8 built on Oct 5 2005 Copyright © 2005 Networks Associates Technology, Inc. Brother, I think you're on to something here. I had taken KB891711 out earlier this year when I was having problems, but then put it back when weeding out unnecessary processes, since some web site had said it was "critical". I now see that an updated version of this patch was released in April, and I'm sure I only have the original (buggy) one from March. I'll verify tonight. Should I try to get the latest version of the patch? I did a Windows update last night, and it didn't show as being needed. Should I purge the the files/folder from the KB891711 folder in Windows? There also seems to be a registry entry that should be removed? How can I get it to stop showing up in msconfig? I finally have HOPE again after coming close to reformatting and moving to XP--which I REALLY didn't want to go through! I won't know what to do with a system that runs again. Thanks a ton!

little_eagle, I have removed KB891711 from my msconfig startup, and verified that it was dated 3/2005 (before the updated patch was released on 4/12/05). The machine is MUCH improved! So now what? Do I delete the file/folder from C:\Windows\System? Modify the registry (it was in there multiple places)? Try and get the new version of the patch? Let me know what you think. Thanks so much for this suggestion!!!!

You don't need to remove it just disable it. The registry entry can stay. ;)
