The other day our AOL accounts got blocked by AOL due to a bulk mailing being initiated with my wife's signon. After getting it reactivated and updating the passwords for our automatic-e-mail checking, I noticed the process behaved oddly so I started suspecting there was a virus on our computer which had done the initial password capture for her account. I had Norton do a full virus scan and it said there was a Trojan Horse virus in SFXOpener.exe. It was unable to repair it so I had it quarantined. I later thought it would be a good idea to run a scan while in safe mode. It said it had an error and was unable to do so. I then tried submitting the quarantined file to Symantec and it just sat there. When I tried to cancel it, Norton indicted there was another file infected which it could also not repair.

I've run a full virus scan again and it came up clean, but I have this nagging feeling that there is a virus on it that Norton's definitions don't detect. Please help me confirm if there is still a virus or malware. Also, should I uninstall and reinstall Norton? I would think that it should run in safe mode, but maybe I'm wrong.

I've enclosed the HiJackThis log for review. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

hi sonicvert,

sorry for delay. lots of posters.

but I have this nagging feeling that there is a virus on it that Norton's definitions don't detect.

do a online scan or two at one of these;

MicroWorld

Bitdefender

Norton

Panda Activescan

TrendMicro

————————————–
start HJT, click on "none of the above, just start the program" next click the "Scan" button. Check these items, then close all windows and click "Fix Checked"

may not be in order:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

O4 - Global Startup: Updates from HP.lnk = C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPHUPD05] c:\Program Files\HP\{45B6180B-DCAB-4093-8EE8-6164457517F0}\hphupd05.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LogitechVideoTray] C:\Program Files\Logitech\Video\LogiTray.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundMan] SOUNDMAN.EXE

O4 - Global Startup: Logitech Desktop Messenger.lnk = C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\LDMConf.exe

also select all these 018 items:

reboot computer once, rescan and post a new hjt log

shelf life
Shelf life - Thank you very much for your assistance.

I ran several of the online virus scans you recommended and they found and deleted some stuff that Norton had not.

BitDefender listed these files as "Update failed" - I wasn't sure what that meant, so I thought I should include them here. There were some related files that it tried to disinfect and failed, so it did say it deleted them.

C:\Program Files\AIM\Sysfiles\WxBug.EXE
C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\3EC955EE.zip
C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\6E073BA0.zip
C:\Temp_dpf\Install_AIM.exe=>wise0041

Here's a new log. I'm not sure if I interpreted your instruction correctly regarding the "018" items. I thought I had, but there's one still for the same dll. It is formatted different than what you had listed, so it may be that I was supposed to omit it. Please let me know if that should be fix-checked also.

hi sonicvert, before you due this look in add/remove programs panel and see if there is a uninstaller for logitech desktop messenger. if so run the uninstaller first then reboot once and do this: run hjt once more and have it fix if present: O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [LDM] C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\LogitechDesktopMessenger.exe O18 - Protocol: bwfile-8876480 - {9462A756-7B47-47BC-8C80-C34B9B80B32B} - C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\GAPlugProtocol-8876480.dll O18 - Protocol: offline-8876480 - {80ABA2DC-886C-40CC-889E-98C70BDF59AE} - C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\BWPlugProtocol-8876480.dll shelf life
Thanks. There was an uninstall and when it uninstalled, it removed the entries you had me watch for.

Earlier today I decided to uninstall and reinstall Norton Internet Security. The firewall is acting much happier now. AdaWare is now able to connect and download an update, previously it just got "stuck" and I would have to manually download the update. I had downloaded Mozilla's Firefox earlier but couldn't get it to connect. Firefox now connects to the internet. I think one of the viruses must have messed something up in Norton - whenever I tried manually configuring a program in the firewall it would just get "stuck".

Here's a new log.

hi sonicvert,

log looks good. make sure xp firewall is disabled since you use nortons. since you had some nasites we will make new restore points because they can get archived.

DISABLE System Restore and then REBOOT; this will delete ALL the old possibly infected Restore Points. Then RE-ENABLE System Restore and reboot AGAIN; this will force Windows to make a new Restore Point on a CLEAN system.

if everything is ok i leave you with some reference material:

All it takes is a few changes:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
occasionaly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

Also download, install and keep updated- Antivirus Software (and use only one):
Free for home users:
avast! 4 Home Edition Download
AVG free version 7.0
AntiVir Personal Edition

Adjust your browser settings: Change your(active x) settings in IE. With IE open go to tools, internet options, security tab. Click on the internet globe, then custom level. Set the first option "download signed active x controls" to prompt, the next two to disable. Read more:
Internet Explorer Privacy & Security Settings
Working with Internet Explorer 6 Security
Many exploits are directed at Internet Explorer, you dont have to use it. Try a different browser.
Like Firefox,
And Pegasus Mail for a safer e-mail, no tweaking needed.

Outlook Express with the default settings is not secure. It will run scripts, download images etc, just like a browser.
look here
and here

Install a firewall. A firewall will control what comes in from the internet and what leaves your computer to the internet. A firewall will also alert you when a application trys to connect to the internet from your computer, this is a good way to catch crapware or trojans, trying to connect out bound from your computer- whats that and why does it need a internet connection? You can deny it access it until more investigation is done. Zone Alarm is a free and easy to use firewall, that will provide in and outbound protection. Microsoft XP firewall only provides inbound protection. SP2 adds in and out bound protection which is better than nothing, but is not as robust as third party firewalls, Be sure to run only >one< firewall. If you use another, be sure to disable XP's built in firewall. If you use Zone Alarm learn what needs/uses your internet connection. If something unusal or out of the ordinary "asks" deny it access until more investigation is done.
Zone Alarm
Kerio Personal Firewall
Outpost Firewall
Sygate Personal Firewall
Tiny Firewall
BlackIce

Download one or two of these, install and update before using:(if these are constantly finding malware, then you need to make changes to your browser and or your habits)
CounterSpy Free trial version
Spybot Search and destroy
Ad-Aware SE Personal edition
Microsoft AntiSpyware (beta version)
Becarful with spyware "removers and scanners"– there are many "rogue/suspect" programs that "claim to remove" spyware.Check here first.

Other programs to consider:
Process Guard
SpywareBlaster
IE-SPYAD
CleanUp

AntiTrojan software to fill in the gap:
a2 free
Ewido Security Suite
Trojan Hunter (30 day trial version)
TDS-3 trail version discontinued as of 07/05
Tauscan trial version

Watch what you download, and where you download it from. Many programs come bundled with extra software. Make sure you understand what it is you will be downloading and installing to your computer. Visit the makers website, learn more about the program, Does the program you want come bundled with other "3rd party" programs? What do the 3rd party programs do? Will they deliver ads? Track your surfing habits?.You may be installing more than you think. Read the EULA agreement, you know, that paragraph of stuff you "agree to" before the software installs? If you search hard enough you can always find a "clean" alternative to any software. Stay away from warez and crack sites. Becarful what you download from file sharing networks. If you are not sure, scan it with your Antivirus app. A small file (in KB) is probably not what you think it is.

shelf life's File Sharing Tips:
Dont have it start with windows, if you see the icon it may be running
Dont run it 24/7
Limit bandwidth if possible
Dont share a huge amount of files
Random is good, stay out of sharing rooms
Scan downloads with Antivirus before launching
Thank you for your help and your tips. Most of this I already do or is already in place, but it is harder to ensure when your family shares the same computer. One question related to that. We are running Windows XP and I have separate sign-ons for my family to help segregate each of our "favorites", documents, etc. When I post a HijackThis log from one of those sessions - either mine or the administrator's typically, is that representative of the other sessions, or do I need to post a log for each of those? Thanks again for your help and advice. My apologies for not commenting earlier. I haven't had a chance to use my home computer for several days and am posting this from work.
