Hi. So, I went on vacation and, when I came back and turned on my computer I got a black screen with white writing that said "sorry for the inconvenience but windows did not start properly…" and it gave me several options - safe mode, a previous configuration, and normal. All three resulted in the same thing - my computer would power down and then return to the same screen again. So, I put in the OS disc that came with my computer and ran a check, so that it fixed any broken files. I got windows running again, and I see in my system configuration utility a program in startup that is just called "1" I unchecked it so that it wouldn't start automatically, but I can't seem to get rid of it. Norton and Spybot Search & Destroy didn't find anything wrong. I downloaded Ad-Aware SE and it found several malware programs, which I deleted. But that 1 is still in my startup and I want to make sure that my system is clean. I rebooted my computer after removing the malware that Ad-Aware found, and then ran the HiJackThis program. This is my HJT log, any help will be greatly appreciated:

Hello Cassie and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Nothing bad is showing in that log. :)

Since you are running msconfig in /auto mode, the bad entries will not show in the log.

Please click on start < run, and type msconfig and then press enter. When the window opens click on the startup tab and make sure there are checkmarks in every entry. Then press ok until you are out of the program. If it asks to reboot, do not reboot.

Now please create a new Hijackthis Log and post it as a reply to this thread. You may now uncheck all of those items again in msconfig.

I see the "1" entry that you mentioned before. It is associated with Yahoo Pager and is not malicious. :)

Nothing in the new log appears bad either. How is the computer working now?
If everything is working well, I'll give you some security recommendations.
It seems to be running fine. I'm confused, though, as to what was wrong with my computer. The reason I thought I had a virus of some sort was because my computer stopped responding - I would turn it on and I would only get a warning screen that said that windows hadn't started properly, only I couldn't get past it. I finally had to use the system cd's to repair some files. I did a system restore after that, and things have been fine since then. I tried to clean up my hard drive and get rid of some unneccesary programs and, for some of them - like Music Matchbox (or Jukebox, or whatever music program comes with Windows) won't delete. Are there any programs I could run within my computer that would check for more broken files and fix that sort of thing? I am familiar with the standard defrag and cleanup and whatnot. In any case, thank you for reviewing the file. It's good to know that my system is clean. Any security tips would be greatly appreciated.
I'm not sure what caused the problem on your computer.

There is no progam that can check for missing or corrupt files for programs other than Windows itself. For the programs that are not working properly, you will need to reinstall them.

To check for missing or corrupt files in Windows, Click Start > Run > and type sfc /scannow (There is a space between the c and /.) You will need your Windows CD if any files are needing replaced.

Since the computer appears clean of malware, I'll give my security recommendations now.

I suggest that you download these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
ie-spyad - Puts over 12,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

Here are two very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
AdAware SE v1.06
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D; and Adaware SE

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.
