Hey there, kind of a long story but here goes. My system got infected by some type of malware, Antivirus XP, that was pretending to be a antivirus program. So I ran my Avira and Super Anti-Spyware scan and removed a couple instances of a trojan, AVE.exe. Reboot the system and all of the sudden I couldn't run any .exe files, so I looked that up and made a quick edit to the registry that fixed that issue. However by this point I think my system is completely knackered considering something obviously affected my registry in a negative way.

Either way I thought I had semi-solved the issue but my system kept crashing after a few minutes of running. I ran Super-Anti Spyware again and it found yet another instance of the same trojan but it crashed before I could remove it so I went into safemode and managed to get rid of it. System was still crashing so I did a system restore to a few days ago hoping that would solve any registry issues. Didn't work so now I'm coming to you guys in hope of some help.

Everything seems normal except when I boot up I get a Microsoft Outlook message saying 'Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft outlooking and set it as the default mail client.' and also that the system keeps crashing.

I followed a couple threads on here and did the ATF Cleaner followed by a quick scan on Malware Bytes, which found Backdoor.sinowal which I removed. Here is my hijackthis:

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Just a little update. Antivirus XP is back! I should also add that I can no longer run Malware Bytes (same thing happened last time the Antivirus XP was running, I double click the icon and nothing happens) and that for the whole duration of this problem whenever I click on a google search result it redirects me either back to the google main page or to some other site, I'll try to find out for you guys.

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, MBAM, SmitfraudFix, Vundofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

If need be, download the tools needed to a flash drive or other removable media, and transfer them to the infected computer.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

XP Users
Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Next:

Download Combofix from any of the links below but rename it to ABCD.exe before saving it to your desktop.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Link 1
Link 2 If using this link, Right Click and select Save As.

Double click on the ABCD.exe ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt so we can continue cleaning the system.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
**Note: If Combofix (ABCD) won't run from the desktop, try running it from the USB device you will also need to skip the Windows Recovery Console download**

——————————————————————–

With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have the Windows Recovery Console pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Scroll down to Step 1, and select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System. Download the file & save it as it's originally named.

Note: If you have SP3, use the SP2 package. Vista and Windows 7 users skip this part

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.

  • Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

    [external image: Posted Image]

  • At the next prompt, click 'Yes' to run the full ComboFix scan.

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply using Copy/Paste.

Notes:

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Also please describe how your computer behaves in your next reply.
OK, so I removed the Antivirus XP again using a combo of Super Anti-Spyware and Malware Bytes before you made the post recommending combofix. Either way the outcome was the same as last time w/ the constant crashing so I ran the combofix as instructed, here is the log:

Thanks again for your time
You have a new rootkit MBR infection.

Please download HelpAsst_mebroot_fix.exe and save it to your desktop.
Close out all other open programs and windows.
Double click the file to run it and follow any prompts.
If the tool detects an mbr infection, please allow it to run mbr -f and shutdown your computer.
Upon restarting, please wait about 5 minutes, click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

helpasst -mbrt

Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt !
When it completes, a log will open.
Please post the contents of that log.

*In the event the tool does not detect an mbr infection and completes, click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

mbr -f

Now, please do the Start>Run>mbr -f command a second time.
Now shut down the computer (do not restart, but shut it down), wait a few minutes then start it back up.
Give it about 5 minutes, then click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

helpasst -mbrt

Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt !
When it completes, a log will open.
Please post the contents of that log.

**Important note to Dell users - fixing the mbr may prevent access the the Dell Restore Utility, which allows you to press a key on startup and revert your computer to a factory delivered state. There are a couple of known fixes for said condition, though the methods are somewhat advanced. If you are unwilling to take such a risk, you should not allow the tool to execute mbr -f nor execute the command manually, and you will either need to restore your computer to a factory state or allow your computer to remain having an infected mbr (the latter not recommended).

I cut that list of files deleted because it was HUGE! What was all that Help Assisant backup stuff? Literally had like everything on my computer in there. Anyway, system seem to be running very well as of now!
That was my fault. I should have had you run helpasst -cleanup.

Good job

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

  • Click START run
  • Now type ABCD /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

If you used DeFogger
You must remember to re-enable your Emulation drivers once we are finished, double click DeFogger to run the tool.

  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Re-enable button to re-enable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_enable which will appear on your desktop.

Your Emulation drivers are now re-enabled.

To be on the safe side, I would also change all my passwords.

Here's my usual all clean post

Log looks good :D

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

[*]Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week

(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

[*]Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.

Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

[*]Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.

This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

[*]Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.

Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would suggest you read How to Prevent Malware:
Wow thanks so much LDTate, for helping me fix the issues and also for all the extra info/links so I'll hopefully stay clean in the long run. I'm very appreciative of the super-professional service, you guys rock!
