Hey guys, My CD/DVD drive in the base unit does not open at all, no green light shows. When the button is pressed the drive does not open. In My Computer the drive is not there, however it used to be (definitely 3+months ago). I have just recently solved a malware/virus problem and am now wondering if this could have affected the drive. If connected in any way, when I start the PC up, a black screen appears and tells me to press F1 to continue. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks

Hi Mohit, Thanks for responding to this thread. You are obviously experienced in the Windows Registry, but could I ask please, that you post a link to the Registry Fix you are recommending rather than attaching a reg file….in this way the OP and others who read the thread can form an opinion from the link on the likely reliability of the reg fix and make an informed decision to download or not. Advice to back up the Registry before making any alterations to it will usually be inluded in the link Please be assured that this is in no way intended to be disrespectful to you, but it is the way we prefer to do things in all our subforums with the exception of the malware removal forum where different proccedures apply Regards paws
Hi Paws, Excellent advice from you Paws, really appreciate your post with guidance to new members on the safer way of doing things, especially dealing with the registry. Best regards,
hey everyone!! thanks for the quick responses: Mohit : thanks for your advice, but after I downloaded the file, and it was successfully put in the registry log (and pc restarted) my internet connection went. this may be entirely unrelated, but I performed a system restore (to yesterday) and the problem went. On another note the program did not seem to fix the DVD drive - it doesnt seem to open at all, appear on My Computer, or even have a blinking light. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks
update on last reply: I retried Mohits suggestion; this time no internet connection problem occured, but no difference seems to have been made! The DVD drive is still not in My Computer or functioining at all (no light, doesn't open when button pressed). Thanks for your help everyone!
I am sorry you are having problems with you machine, I suggest you do the following:

Please post back and let us know how you get on and if we can help further.

kind regards,

Backup/archive/copy

To be on the safe side I strongly recommend that before doing anything at all you check that your back up/archive/copy of all your important data, drivers, files, settings, work, etc is 100% up to date accurate and reproducible, (even if your back up is even only a day or so out of date, it's worth updating it now.)
Also don't forget to check that you have all your application Installation CD's to hand together with the product keys (including those for Windows itself)

Windows Protected System File Checker SFC
  • Start
  • Run
  • type:sfc /scannow (note the space between the c /)
Have your Win XP installation disc handy as if damaged files are found they will need to be copied across from your disc, if SFC can't find correct copies elsewhere.

Windows XP Installation disc not available or wrong Service Pack or SP1 when SP2/SP3 is needed. Please note that windows does not show a report at the end of the scan if all is fine with your system.

There are work- arounds to this problem but the easiest, by far is to borrow one and use that. It is perfectly OK to do this, for the purposes of running SFC,and if you ask around all your friends, you are likely to find someone who will be able to help you out.

SFC no disc, no friends able to help.

Well you will need to do it the harder way and as a registry edit will be required it is essential that you back up your registry before you do anything else. Then in the event of trouble it will be easier to repair your registry. Download ERUNT from here: link and take a moment to familiarise yourself with the programme and how to repair your registry with it if it should become necessary. At the same time it would be wise to create a System Restore point, post back here if you need instructions on how to do this.

For the alterations needed to run SFC If you go here link you will find detailed instructions on the copying of files and the system changes you need to make. When you have followed all the instructions, reboot you machine and try to run SFC again, and please let us know how you go.

Post back with more questions and an update.

kind regards,
hey thanks for your help tallin, the problem is I cant open the DVD drive to put the disc in, and if i did manually it doesnt read it. the SFC is running at the moment, and will post results when finished. Thanks again, T-man
SFC scannow will not show a report, especially if you cannot (and I understand why) insert your OS CD.

Try some of these links to see if any may be of help to you.

best regards,
Sorry to keep on bothering you, but the DVD is still not working :( Is there anyway in which I may have accidentally uninstalled the E: drive? Or could it just have broken? Can I reinstall it in any way? Thanks for all of your help Kind regards

I hope you let SFCScannow run undisturbed, even without the OS CD in the drive…

Please reply to the above question.

My CDRom Drive is my D:\Drive - anything is possible,

Have you opened your tower, looked in to see if the cable is connected?

Clean out the dustbunnies while you are there following this link

Also you could check the following:
  • Right Click on My Computer
  • Properties
  • Hardware
  • Device Manager
  • Click the + next to DVD/CD-Rom Drives
  • Is it showing as installed
Report back when you have researched the Google links I gave you, and completed the above requests. All the above and in other posts I have sent will take some time to research so take it all slowly please.

Best regards,
Thank-you; I will take some time looking over all of this! Thanks for your help, will be back as soon as possible though may take some time. Regarding you question over SFCScannow, it seems to work, although when the bar is full it just disappears, and 'finishes', with no further boxes displayed. Hope this is of help Thanks
