Norton identifies 3 files as Adware but doesn't eliminate/fix them.

All are listed by Norton under C:\WINDOWS\System32\ The are: gebcc.dll mllji.dll and sstqn.dll

I followed Symantec instructions to download Trojan.Vundo followed by Adware.VirtuMonde - they find nothing

Doing a manual check of registry and all dll files, none of the identified files or files can be found

I then ran Spybot Search & Destroy - it doesn't identify a critical problem in the basic report but under >Tools>System Startup under system.ini, the three files are identified.

Attempts to delete do not work and gebcc.dll will not respond to toggle to stop it from starting. The other two do respond to the toggle switch

Using Hijack this I marked gebcc.dll and a key ending in gebcc.dll for deletion but they are still there upon e-boot

So…it is clear I have a persistant problem. I think it was originally related to winfixer and antispyware garbage but those pop ups have been blocked.

How do I figure out what all the bad files are and how do I permanently eliminate them?

Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

Run Hijack This!

Click the "Open the Misc Tools section" button.

Click the "Open process manager" button.

Check the "Show DLLs" box (upper right).

Click on each item in the upper window, then look in the lower window.

Check to see which processes are using C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcc.dll

Post back letting me know all processes using that DLL.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.

l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing .

This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, Notepad will open with a log. Copy/paste the contents of that log into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!
There were three processes using C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcc.dll 656 C:\WINDOWS\System32\winlogon.exe 968 C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE 680 C:\ProgramFiles\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

After the reboot, delete any of these files found:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ddabx.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ddccc.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mllji.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sstqn.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ijllm.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ijllm.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ijllm.ini2
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ijllm.bak2
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\nqtss.ini

They may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these files.
I stuck with it and ran steps as recommended.
A couple notes -

The first screen with a list of forums did not appear, it went right ot request to type filepath

I entered the two paths and instead of jumping to HijackThis, a Norton warning appeared and I permited the action but this stopped the process. i logged out, rebooted and ran through the steps again but had Hijackthis open after I started the process again.

I found 5 of the 6 items for FIX Check - I could not find 02 BHO MSEvents Object

I didn't get Blue Screen of Death - just rebooted

I found only one of the 9 files after re-booting (ddccc.dll). I ran a search for each one in System32 with hidden files checked. Also followed the tip included in your post. Is there anything else i can do to make sure I searched completely?

Here are the logs from HiJack this run after the clean up and VundoFix text Thanks again

The log looks good.

If you want to check for the unwanted files again, run option #1 in l2mfix.bat again, and look in the list of files at the end.

If they appear there, then they are still on your system

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.

I hadn't opened all hidden files. I found all 9 files listed although two did not have the .ini extension just appeared as ijllm and nqtss. I deleted these. I ran the L2mfix again and the files are not listed Norton now runs a clean scan with the exception of the most recently deleted proplem files in the Recycler folder. Should I now wipe these out. Is a regualr deletion fine? Tom Coyote site recommends Trojan Hunter - Would this program find and fix this type of Adware problem? Thanks for help and patience. :wavey:
You'll have to empty the recycle bin sooner or later. Might as well be now. As far as I know there is no "stand alone program" that removes this infection… Yet… :)
