Persistent pop-ups, every time open a browser, frequency increases to pick up changed browser states (eg back button, refreshes) as it builds up more and more over several days with corresponding increase in frustration, then suddenly nothing for a few hours, you think it's beat and it starts over!

Reboots, Ad-Aware, Spybot & CounterSpy make no difference, can you? Thanks for having a look. Kindest regards, Vince S.

I have solved the problem. Norton Anti-Virus found it and I was able to use their info to get rid of it, although it wasn't all correct it was adequate to allow me to stumble through. They talked about Adware.LOP which was difficult to erase, Adware.CDT, Download.Adware plus a couple of other things
Thanks LD. While I seem to be over the initial difficulty that brought me here I would appreciate any comments you would like to make about this HJT.

I suggest you do this:

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Do you know what this one is?
C:\DOCUME~1\VINCES~1\APPLIC~1\OBJGRI~1\SetupAboutRoam.exe

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED PROFILE USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thanks again LD, did exactly as you suggested, plus deleted the queried one as the file was missing anyway.

I've checked the prefetch dir every few weeks and there's never been anything in it, bit strange I thought and today was no different.

The PC is a 2.4GHz P4 768Mb XP Pro SP2, it is a bit slow to start but I do have a lot of software installed. I have had a long term issue with anything in the Start-up folder starting itself twice as you can see at the end of the O4's. If I delete one of these entries it always has the effect of deleting both. I have a distant recollection when I first installed XP that I didn't like their directory organisation. I capitulated on the "My" in My documents as I found some programs couldn't live without this name, but I stuck it on a separate drive, and I think I dragged one / some of the directories around in Documents and Settings as I really hated the concept of being forced to make a single user machine into a multi user system. I'm probably still paying for whatever that little spat was about! Whilst I can't remember what I did I can see I have a startup folder under the All Users Start Menu but my user name Start Menu has only an empty Programs directory in it.

Otherwise I would say the PC is operating generally within the bounds of acceptability. I get strange / missing text on pop-up controls sometimes and seem to be able to crash Windows Explorer with an innocent mouse click or cursor movement every couple of days, sometimes more frequently. Despite having the best memory I could get at the time I have a suspicion there is a transient memory fault at play here.

I was messing about earlier in the day with a minor software installation plus I deleted a reference to a missing Nero BackItUp file which I hope the next boot will stop telling me my two week trial is up for (I don't know why Norton's Windoctor didn't pick that one up). And I added an auto load for an Excel timesheet file to see if the duplicate starting is still happening, it is! (it wants to open the second one read only, yet I tick "fix this" for one of them and they are both missing on the next scan, I just put it back in the start-up folder for illustration). This is the HJT log I get now:

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then please run Ewido, click on the Scanner run a full scan and let it clean everything it finds. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.
G'day LD,

Followed your instructions precisely. The ewido software is a neat bit of gear. Here is the log plus a new HJT log:

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
G'day LD,

OK, did exactly that, I Fixed the Panasonic service too, it was next to the one you nominated as I uninstalled that software a few weeks back, it left bits everywhere. The HJT log done immediately after the reboot is below, but I didn't post it straight away as I initially got distracted by trying to figure out the answer to describing how the computer is behaving at the moment. I think the answer is "a bit slow to start up but otherwise within the normal boundaries one expects of a mid-spec PC on XP SP2 that hasn't been rebuilt for about 3 years". Its a bit glitchy in some regards, like say the dual monitor nVidea controller messes up the window controls a bit sometimes, I've sorted out a workaround. I've mentioned a couple of other oddities also. Was there some specific aspect you were looking for more info on? Thanks again ……….Vince

Backup your Registry…
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run…)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.
G'day LD,

Boy what a voyage of discovery that was. RegClean found 2,432 faults on the first pass, three hundred odd next and needed a few reboots and more passes before it finished finding new faults. Everything seemed to work fine after this process except the 6 month old HP 7410 All-in-One printer, and Acrobat 7 also had to do a quick reinstall of something but it didn't ask me for even so much as a mouse click while it sorted itself out. HP was looking for tray.msi and I gave it the original cd and pointed at the file in setup but it was the wrong type. Similarly when I went to scan or fax etc it was asking for files like scan.msi and fax.msi and was not happy with the original files. I assume this was because they were updated by HP Software Update. I did full searches of the computer to try and find newer versions but came up blank. There was no working repair function so I ended up using Add/Remove to uninstall all HP software components and re-install them from original cd, update everything then re-set all the ridiculous defaults that HP has. Those HP folk really don't "get it" when it comes to software design, I sent them detailed notes about the problems I had just in case someone there actually gives a stuff.

Once the HP software was all OK again I ran RegClean and it found 75 green faults, mostly HP file missing's and a few others that made sense, and it found 4 red faults re invalid Active X's. So I deleted the green ones and then deleted the red ones so I had two different back-ups. On a reboot HP started the same rubbish - it isn't just a matter of clicking Cancel either, the only way to stop it is the Ctrl Alt Delete task manager. And the software itself simply refuses to allow the printer and scanner to be used. So I ran Regclean again, a few file missings of no consequence and 5 red ones - there was no way I could make sense of the exact terms used to decide if / which ones had anything to do with HP. And I forgot to write them down in case you are interested, but it would be no hassle to run that again, I remember one said something about the file association for .tif being invalid, which is just silly as that is associated with PaintShop Pro 10 which still works a treat. So I restored the 4 red ones from before and it all worked on reboot. That means no more messing with it!

The purpose of writing all that is to let anyone who might read the earlier advice what they could be up for if they've got HP software. Personally, I'm glad I did it. Finding so many registry flaws is bound to have extended the useful life of the PC before a rebuild is necessary - which I would like to be about a year after Longhorn has been released, by which time it might be worth having!

I'm guessing it will be a few days before it's clear how the PC is ticking over now, you know how things go bump in the night with the games software play with each other… It does seem to be generally more crisp 'though at the moment, bit faster to start.

Here's the current HJT log after all that fiddling:

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
