Hope I'm doing this right. I am having problems opening internet explorer 6. The hour glass disappears and the program will not open. After several tries it finaly opens. Sometimes I can not go to any web page but this is not always the case. Sometimes I will get an "about blank" page that is hard to close but not that all ways. When I log off my pc profile I have to go through all the windows of internet explorer not responding before I can shut down. It is like they are running in the background but do not show up anywhere. I have downloaded spybot and adware as suggested. Can you help?
Thanks so much

Hi Judy and welcome to the forum. Sorry for the wait we are very busy :( If you still need help and are not being helped elsewhere this is how we will proceed.

You have a lot of junk in the R1 and R0 area of this log. I would like to remove all of the junk, but want to know if you use one for your homepage? It is possible something in there is causing your problem? This line: O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=www.worldnet.att.net we will remove IF you don't use it?

We will use these scans to see if anything is hiding before we clean with HJT.

1) If you have a corrupt or missing file this proceedure may fix it. You may need your Windows CD:
Click Start>Run, type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things. You will need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.
Let me know if that helps.

2) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp and please do not run it until I ask you to.

3) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

4) Ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

5) Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with any feedback you have.

Thanks…pskelley

Hi Pskelley Thanks for your infomation.
I have been having trouble getting to this site. It keeps giving me the this page can not be displayed but here I am so here goes:
I have done all you ask. The computer seems to be running better but still have some problem with the internet explorer opening correctly.
To answer your questions. I no longer use ATT so that can go. I have been using Excite as my homepage but with all the "hits" that spybot says I get there maybe I should change that.
I have a question for you. After getting back to this page and rereading what you wrote I realize that I did not use the XP CD for the sfc /scannow. I was expecting it to ask me to put the cd in and it did not. Do I need to re do this? If so do I have to do the whole process over of ewido and cclean too?
Meanwhile here are the scans
Thanks so much for your help. Now, hopefull I can get back to this page next time!
Judy

Hi Judy, Let me try to answer your questions first.

1) the CD is not often needed, it depends on what is stored on the computer. If Windows has a file that has become corrupted or is misssing, and I am not even sure it was, then Windows will look for a file to replace the problem one. If it does not find the file then it will ask for your Windows CD. Since it did not, then either your files were ok or it located the file it needed on the computer. I have had several problems recently that sounded like yours which were fixed with this method and that is why I tried it first.

2) can your tell me if you are having problems getting to other websites, or could TomCoyote forum be the only one?

3) If that is your first run with Ewido, then you can see you had a few cookies but no major infections that it detected.

4) Thanks for the information about ATT and your other feedback. I do so appreciate it, so much easier when the communication goes both ways.

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Restart your computer empty your recycle bin and post a new HJT log along with some more of your feedback. How are you running now?

Thanks…Phil
Hi Phil,
Sorry it has taken so long. Once again I have not been able to get to this forum and YES it is only the Tom Coyote pages that I can not access. I tried everything I could think of to no avail. I even did a search on Tom Coyote and none of those links would work but everything else did. I searched all through Spybot, Adware, and Ewido looking for a place that you could be blocked. Finally, last night I did another complete clean up and shut off the computer. For some reason this morning it opened immediately.
I am still having trouble opening the internet explorer and then, when I go to shut off, I have to close all the "not responding" windows first. Immediately after I ran the ccleaner it seemed to open better.
Here is the HJT log. Have a nice day. Please don't get lost out there this time. LOL

Hi Judy, While I am sure you are not the only one, one of the members of our staff who lives in Finland has DNS issues and can't reach TomCoyote either. I have no solution for this except to check with your ISP, perhaps they can help. I would be willing to suggest other help forums, in fact here is the list: http://spywarewarrior.com/asap.html if that helps.

Before I look at your HJT log, here are other possible ways to correct the Internet Explorer issues that may or may not help:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=318378

Edited to offer you a link to a good alternate browser.
