Thanks in advance for your help! I thought I should seek some help when I started getting a lot of popup ads and after I tried to load Spyware Doctor 3.2 to check it out found it would fail on installation.

Jeez this is worse than I thought. Ran NoAdWare and found the W32/Noala.b@MM worm, IST Bar, Backdoor.GWGhost, and BackdoorDarksky.C. See first posting for HJT log…..thanks in advance for your help!!
Hello 1836dave, Welcome to the forum.

This is what I suggest you do.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.4 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.06 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thank you for your prompt response. I've downloaded CW Shredder and copied all the other links and will post again after completion. This is the kids pc. One asked me to look at the slow pc with popups. Now notice Nortons AV live update seems to hang. If pc has been on for a while can refuse to shut down pc - will wait for the 'live update' program to end - sounds like a remote control was present . Does not occur if on for a short while but if on for several hours more frequent.
The scans took awhile, finished with these results:
Ran CWShredder and found nothing.
Trendmicro housecall found the trojan Purscan.A
While there ran Trendmicro AntiSpyware and found a fistfull all removed ok.
eTrust found nothing.
Panda found nothing.
Tried cold shutdown and pc hung with 'live update' running, held PC Power button to shutdown. Restart ok.
Loaded and ran Spybot, found and removed 4 more.
Loaded and ran Adaware full scan found nothing.
emptied recycle bin and deleted files bin.

Shutdown and rebooted pc several times all seemed normal.

Reran NoAdware still shows the W32, IST bar, GWGhost and darksky pests (as above) are still present.

My Corporate edition Symantec AV still hangs on retrieving updates, last virus signature update 7/27/05.

THANKS for all the help so far!!!!!

Thanks for staying with me last night.

The NoAdware is v3.0 downloaded from the link off the TC homepage header. Did not pony up $30 to get its erase option. Did get latest signatures this am.

Reran HJT and 'fix checked' 5 of 6 requested - the O4 C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM/UIS.exe was not present and file not found at path. A search of C:/WINDOWS all folders did not find it either.
Recycle emptied
Several reboots ok
NoAdware v3.0 still shows same bogeys. Wonder if it is an advertising ploy?

System runs much snappier. Will let it run without reboot for a while and see if whatever was running under the 'live update' comes back or UIS.exe appears…

Thanks again for all your help!

Those all have the type of RegValue and a severe danger.

There are several cookies also listed.

Have executed next suggestions-

Deleted the two R0s and the O9 Panda line with 'fix checked' and nothing else open.
Ran disk cleanup with all checked. All showed 0.00 size as I had cleaned with SystemSuite 2000 recently.
Rebooted OK.
HJT log attached above.

Thanks again for your help!

Can you run SpyBot and Ad-Aware again per the instructions below?

Hmmmm…..Sorry I missed your Sunday night post. The assistant has not brought up any new posts so I did not go further, tonight I open the thread and saw you had responded.

Ran spybot and adaware se per instructions, adaware found 12 cookies and thats it. Emptied recycle bin and tried to shutdown but hung on 'live update' process still running. Cancelled shutdown and made HJT log attached below.

Power off shutdown, scandisk restart, manually ran Windows update and there were no updates, all ran ok.

Ran Regedit and looked for the keys identified in previous '4 bogeys' post and did not find any keys at the addresses shown. Really looking like ad gimmick for updating to the $30 version of NoAdware v3.0!

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
