Looks like a hijacking!

Good morning. My bosses home computer looks like it got zapped. Since he knows nothing about this, and I know a little more, I get to fix it. I suggested he run Ad-aware and Spybot, which he did, but still has the home page spitting out ads and other such nonsense. Ads continue to spit out as he browses.

The hijack log file is:

Hi Mike and welcome to the forum. Sorry for the wait we are extremely busy :( You might want to let the boss fix this one?? It's nasty and goes by the name of Aurora/Nail infection around here. There is a new fix that has been successful in cases where folks follow the directions carefully.

I first want to thank Swandog46 and anyone else who participated in the creation of this fix.

BEFORE BEGINNING, Please read completely through the instructions below and download the files from the links provided. You may want to save or print out these instructions for easier reference.

First, download Ewido Security Suite.

Next, download Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and the VX2 Cleaner Plug-in. Install Ad-Aware using the default options, then install vx2cleaner_inst.exe, taking all the defaults there as well.

Run Ad-Aware, update to the latest definitions, then click on Add-ons in the lefthand column. Select VX2 Cleaner V2.0 and click Run Tool. Click "OK", then, if something is found, click "Clean" as in the directions given. Click "Close", and exit Ad-Aware.

Reboot your PC and run Ad-Aware again. This time, click on the Start button in Ad-Aware, select "Perform smart system scan" and click Next. Once the scan finishes, click "Next" again. Select all objects found (right click anywhere in the list of found objects and click "Select All Objects"). Click "Next" one more time, then "OK" to confirm the removal.

You will be prompted to set Ad-Aware to run on reboot, click "OK". Exit Ad-Aware and restart your PC once again.

When Ad-Aware starts up, click on "Start", then "Next". Follow the steps above if anything is found, or click "Finish", then exit Ad-Aware.

For a final cleanup, please install and run Ewido.
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged), select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections". If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.
  • When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.
Please finish up by rebooting your system once more, and posting a new HijackThis log and the log from the Ewido scan.

I do see stuff that is not part of this infection, so we will have more to do.

Thanks…pskelley

Thanks very much!!! The boss is bringing his computer back so that I can try this stuff. I will report back ASAP.

You guys are great!

Mike

Any additional suggestions? Thanks again for all your help!
OK Mike, Looks like those tools and you did the job  There is stuff left (how did your boss get this infected?) not related to Aurora/Nail. You need some good spyware programs and I will suggest some free ones soon, You should also check in the Security Center to make sure all three items are on GO. Then please do this:

1) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp and please do not run it until I ask you to.

2) Download, update, configure and run Spybot: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php Please do not activate TeaTimer until we are finished with the repair. Even though you have the program, I want to make sure it is 1.4 and configured as in the link. Would not hurt to check the Adaware setting and run it again also.

The four Dell links: http://www.dell4me.com/myway unless they are used check and remove them.

If C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\ which aol bundles with other junk without the users knowledge is not used on this computer, use uninstall in Add Remove programs. If it is used, ignore the prompts to remove it. Thanks.

I can't identify this one: C:\Program Files\winCMAPP\wincmapp.exe If you don't know it, look for Wincmapp and CMAPP uninstall them both if there.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

SHOW HIDDEN FILES: Follow the instructions in the link to enable hidden files for your operating system.
You may wish to reverse this process if you have any concern about anyone getting into these hidden system files.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Program Files\CMAPP\ >>> folder

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\ >>> folder

C:\Program Files\winCMAPP\ >>> folder

C:\WINDOWS\system32\pshwr.exe >>> file

C:\Windows\Prefetch: Locate this folder and delete all of the contents (NOT THE FOLDER) This information will tell you more about Prefetch:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_…refetch-XP.html

Run CCleaner, when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

Use these instructions to turn System Restore off, restart the computer then turn it back on. This will give you fresh files and purge anything bad that may have been hiding looking to reinfect you.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…src=sec_doc_nam

Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let me know how you are running now.

Thanks…Phil
O.K. I tried to follow your instructions in order. I think I did o.k. The only thing that wouldn't work was deleting the winCMAPP folder - gave me "access denied" error. I also could not find the file pshwr.exe in C:\WINDOWS\sysem32 (or anywhere else in C:\WINDOWS; I searched). I ran Spybot and CCLEANER,etc.

Everything seems to be working o.k., though I did get one stray IE window, but I can't prove I didn't click something accidentally. I'll let the boss take it home for a spin - and tell him to keep out of trouble.

Many thanks for all your efforts!

Here is the log file from HiJack This one more time.

OK Mike, we are coming down the home stretch. One more item is holding on. I checked around and it is deleted in logs it appears in. If you want to check it you can do that here: http://virusscan.jotti.org/ or here: http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Config…"
2. Click "Misc Tools"
3. Click "Open Process manager"

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

C:\Program Files\wincmapp\wincmapp.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check the following, if present:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [wincmap] "C:\Program Files\winCMAPP\wincmapp.exe"

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

C:\Program Files\winCMAPP <<< folder

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them from "Safe Mode".

===============

Reboot back into normal mode and post back a new HJT log, let me know how everything goes.

Thanks…Phil
