I need help badly

We are running multiple Windows 2000 Advanced servers in our network, each dedicated to a specific task (file server, mail, web, sql, backup, etc.) Our web and mail servers are exposed to the internet through a firewall and separate subnet and both have been either infected or hacked. There are two many symptoms to list here but suffice it to say that it is obvious that things are not running correctly. The biggest two indicators are our inability to navigate our network using Windows Explorer ("The server is not configured for transactions" error) andour web server is running at about 80% CPU utilization and 50% memory yet nothing is running (according to the task manager and a process utility). We did get hit by Zotob through on of our e-mail accounts but were able to wipe it off easily when it happened. We are up to date on all service packs, security updates, etc.

Here is the log file for the first server (our mail server):

I just couldn't find a link that described it exactly.

1st Server

Please disable Teatimer, it can interfere with the cleaning process:

How to Disable Teatimer

After we have cleaned your system, please be sure to reverse this process, and re-enable Teatimer.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [System Management Service] smsc.exe

O23 - Service: WindowsService (WINSERVICE) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\service.exe

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This!.

Now, please go to:

Start –> Run

In the box type in services.msc then hit < Enter > (or click OK)

In the Name column for:

WindowsService (WINSERVICE)

< Double-click > it.

In the dialogue box that pops up, check in the Path to executable box.

It should say: C:\WINNT\service.exe

That's how to be sure you have the right one.

Now, click Stop to stop that rogue process.

In the Startup type box, change it to Disabled.

Click Apply then OK

Close the services.msc window.

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Delete all of the following noted (in red) file(s)/FOLDER(s) you can find:

c:\winnt\service.exe <— file
(Delete this service.exe file, in this folder ONLY!!!)

c:\winnt\system32\smsc.exe <— file

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)

Tried everything that you indicated except I did not find "services.exe" or "csm.exe" after we booted into safe mode. And, "smsc.exe" would not delete - access denied error. We tried in safe mode both thru Explorer and the Command Prompt and once we restarted into normal mode with no luck. Here are the logs after we did everything:

I can tell you already that there is a considerable (!) performance difference even without success deleting the files. Obviously, this is on the right track. Thanks!!!
Both logs look a lot better.

Even if the "smsc.exe" file wasn't able to be deleted, it doesn't show up in either log, so it can't be a threat.

In the first log you can "fix" with Hijack This!, then "Stop" and "Disable" this service:

O23 - Service: Windows Product Activation (wpa) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\system32\wpa.exe (file missing)

I wasn't too concerned about that the first time around since it says "(file missing)"

It is (was) this:

W32.Esbot.B

If you look on that page, there are a couple of registry changes it may have made that you would want to reverse.

There are a lot of "exe" files active that I haven't researched fully. I assumed it was because these are "servers" and they need the other applications to be running as such.

I will check them out in more detail and post again if I find anything else that needs your attention.

In the mean time, all I can offer (if you want to try them) are the "standard" things to hunt for items that may not show up in a Hijack This! log file:

Please download and run Spybot-Search&Destroy and Ad-Aware; they are the standard programs for finding and cleaning malware off your system. Here are links to both programs, and instructions for their use.

Get Spybot - Search & Destroy from Spybot Search and Destroy
(This is the NEW Version 1.4)
Get AdAware SE Personal from Lavasoft
(This is the NEW Build 1.6)

Download and install these programs if you don't already have them. If you do have them, make sure they are UPDATED AND CONFIGURED AS DESCRIBED here:

Configure Adaware

Configure Spybot

Reboot after running each program.

Try these online virus scans:
Trend-Micro Housecall

Panda Activescan

Etrust Security Advisor

Bitdefender

Choose "fix" or "clean".

Let them remove any infections found. Reboot after each scan.

Report any infections found but not "cleaned" or removed.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new Hijack This! log file into this thread. :)

You can also do this (on the machines that the "smsc.exe" file couldn't be deleted):

Please download/unzip this:

RegScan.vbs

on Regscan.vbs, and search for this:

smsc

Paste the contents of the results into your next post.
:)

Like I said, I will research the "odd" "exe's" running, and post again if any are found to be malicious.
