Hi,

Saw my Microsoft Spyware pop up but before I could check what it was, it dropped down. Something about an attempted browser hijack. Below is my HJT list and the two that look out of place are: red0r.dll (2nd from last on list) and CAPM1RSK.EXE (and the other two which are similar). I googled red0r and nothing came back from the search.

Anything look out of place?

Thank You

Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.

l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing .

This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, Notepad will open with a log. Copy/paste the contents of that log into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Not seeing what I expected….

Let's try something first.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O20 - Winlogon Notify: iexplore - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\red0r.dll

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
Hi Micah, I did close and run HJT. I also ran the list and remembered that my original post is after doing what you had asked. I most likely would be repeating myself and filling up the post here. It came out exactly as my original post. I should have said that I did run HJT and I tried to check off and clear the red0r line originally. I've done cleanings before, but never have I seen one that stayed so that is the reason for my original post. If you take a look at my original post, that is what my system is showing after running the log and attempting to clean the red0r file myself. I'm not seeing any other adverse reactions on my computer lately but not being able to find information or being able to clean something off my hard drive feels like the computer is not mine anymore. Especially when doing a google or net search and nothing shows up on this dll file. I have yet to search on Microsoft, but where would there be a library of dll files to research? Have you heard of this dll file? If you need me to run the program again specifically, no problem. Thank you.
If you "fixed" it once, and it returned in the log file, please do this:

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing , then press any key to reboot your computer.

After the reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!
Micah,

Wow, that seemed to get it! I should have asked what kind of draino (the L2mfix file) I was running on my system to get it clean. But no questions in order to get rid of this bug.

I'm not sure if it will come back on a reboot though. Any info on what this bug was?

Here are the files I ran:

/\/\/\/\/ 1st is the L2mfix;/\/\/\/\/\/

Any other information I need or which could be helpful is appreciated.

Thank You.
"Look2Me" is some kind of a "browser infection".

Here's info on the other file:

Canon Advanced Printing Technology RPC Server Process

Only one other thing in the log that needs your attention is a "dubious" O16:

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O16 - DPF: {41F17733-B041-4099-A042-B518BB6A408C} - http://a1540.g.akamai.net/7/1540/52/200305…meInstaller.exe

Reboot, and you should be "good to go".

If you are having other problems, please let me know.

M68 :)

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.

I almost forgot…

Filename:  CAPM1LAK.EXE
Name: Canon PC1200 iC D600 iR1200G Status Window

Description: Canon P1200 printer status

I couldn't find any info specific to:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\CAPM1SWK.EXE

But I'm confident it is a Canon printer software item as well.
Hi Micah, I appreciate your checking on the other items. I found after a quick search they are old drivers from a former printer. I won't worry about them right now. I also have FireFox on my computer and use it whenever surfing unknown sites. I need to use it more. But I have two kids so that means I'll be back here or find a linux box they can use :P On a side note, a friend of mine installed a server here at home with Mandrake Linux so my 9 year old son could run his Half Life 2 Death Match games. He's getting good at administrating it and is searching to learn more. Better that than microsoft. I'm going to use the suggestions you advised to check my IE and ramp up the security. Your help was much appreciated. Take care and thank you, Ivan.
