I was trying to solve the problem my self when I landed on this site. So I was wondering if somebody can take a look at my hijackthis log. Also after using Spybot I've found that rundll32.exe no longer works and thus some features of Windows would not run e.g. Most things in the control panel.

Help is greatly appreciated!!!

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Open the HijackThis Folder. Find the file HijackThis.exe, Right Click on the file and Select Rename. Rename Hijackthis.exe to Spyware.exe.

Next:

* Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combo.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

I've fixed the rundll32.exe problem by downloading it and replacing it.

The computer works fine now except when I go into my computer and tries to open a drive it creates a new window directing at My Documents.

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.


Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

I decided to uninstall XAMPP since I wasn't using it incase you wonder why it's not in the runnning processes list anymore.

My computer appears to be running fine. No NOD32 threat popups any more. Though the previous problem with my computer still exists. Currently the only work around it is right clicking the drive and selecting open.

Lets try this:

You can use windows sfc (system file checker) You'd need your XP CD to make this work.
Click Start> Run> type sfc /scannow Note the space.
(Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow)

"Windows File protection could not initiate a scan of protected system files. The specific error code is 0x000006ba [The RPC server is unavailable.]" I have the CD inserted however, I have disabled SFC previously in order to delete such folders like "msn gaming zone", "xerox" etc.

If RPC service isn't running you will see all of the problems you speak of.

Try clicking on start, on run, keying in services.msc and clicking OK. When you get the services list, take a look and make sure you have only the two RPC (click on the thumbnail to expand it) with the top one automatic and started and the next one manual and not started.

hmmm both rpc services are as you speak of. If this minor problem cannot be resolved it's fine with me as you have helped me to a great extent, spending your time and effort on my problem. I appreciate your help and generosity greatly.

I tried replacing my explorer.exe file with the explorer.exe on my other computer. There was a 1kb size difference. I rebooted and the problem was still there. :(
