Hello all,

I'm having trouble with adware.aurora. I have Norton antivirus installed on XP and have followed instructions on removing this but to no avail. I can't seem to remove the program "The ABI network" via the add/remove program facility and as fast as I delete files manually, they just reappear.

Here is a hijack this log from a scan I've just done.

Any help from you lovely souls is much appreciated.

MMx

Hi Mr Messy, Welcome to TomCoyote.org I am tj416 and I will be assisting you with your problem. I am checking your log now and will reply to this topic as soon as I have an answer for you.
Hi Mr Messy,

I'll be taking over from Tj416. Apart from Aurora, you have some other infections as well. But we'll get to them in time. The first thing to remove is Aurora and its companion Epolvy (the file ending with r). And the last one will be tricky enough.

PLEASE READ AND FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY; YOU MAY WANT TO PRINT OR SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS LOCALLY BEFORE STARTING.

1. Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido Security Suite:
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.
Download CCleaner and install, but do not run it yet.

2. Please download this revised installer for the Nailfix utility.
DO NOT run it yet.
Alternate download links here:
http://www.spywareedge.net/nf/nailfix.exe
http://www.spywareaid.com/index.php?file=s…22&softtype;=exe

3. Reboot to Safe Mode
How to start the computer in Safe mode
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…src=sec_doc_nam

4. Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on nailfix.exe. Click "Next" in the setup, then make sure "Run Nailfix" is checked and click "Finish". Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly — this is normal.

5. Next, run Ewido again.
  • Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged), select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections". If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.
  • When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.
Then run HijackThis, click Scan, and place a checkmark by the following item (if found):

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [random] c:\windows\system32\random.exe r

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked Note that the 04 entry may have changed names if you have rebooted since posting the log; look for an entry with a similar format, that will always in in a single letter r.

Locate and delete the following File in BOLD:
c:\windows\system32\random.exe (or whatever the name may have changed to, as noted above).

6. Now, run CCleaner.
  • Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
  • If running Firefox: click on the "Applications" tab and uncheck "Cookies" under "Firefox".
  • Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.
Finally, restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.
Hi Bobbi,

thanks for the help,

I've run the programs as you suggested but couldn't find the files to check in hijack this.
A few days after my first post a housemate ran ad adware, spybot and a free version of trojan hunter, not knowing that I'd posted the original log here and was waiting for advice.
Hope nothings been screwed up. Sorry.
Anyway, all is now done as you suggested - I've uninstalled Trojan Hunter from the computer because I didn't think I should have too many antivirus programs running at the same time.
Logs included here.

Thanks again,

MM.

Hi Mr Messy,

it looks like a big change. You're running from Safe Mode, please post a log from Normal Mode. Safe Mode doesn't load everything, and what I can't see, I can't fix.

You might want to save this page on your favorites, so you can find it again when you return. You can also click on your name and click on "Find All Posts" to find your thread.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - SlimBho2.dll' - (no file)

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [180ClientStubInstall] "C:\WINDOWS\stubinstaller5975.exe"

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked".

Restart your computer in Safe Mode. How do I Safe Boot my computer?

Show hidden files. How do I show hidden files?
At the end if the fix you can return the files to hidden status if you want.

Delete the following files in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

C:\WINDOWS\stubinstaller5975.exe

Restart your computer and post a new log in this thread.

Please enable everything you have turned off in 'System Configuration Utility' (MSConfig.exe). This way your system will not hide any potential malware and hijackers. What I cannot see, I cannot fix!

Post a fresh log. Afterwards you can turn off everything you had turned off. Do NOT restart your computer while everything is turned on
Hi Bobbi and thanks again for all your help,

Hi Mr Messy,

This log looks clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available… be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them….

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2

Please post back if you are still having any problems….
Deleted the link

Worked for me. Yes it's auroa's tool…. spent 8 hours trying other solutions. Gave up and used this tool. It's been 2 weeks and everything looks ok.
Thanks Bobbi for all of your advice and help - which I've duly taken.x. As for bafrhf… I may not be that computer savvy, but I think this last post is suspicious. Or is it spam?
No, I'm not spam… I posted this several times to respond to other peoples issues. I understand your you are trying to be very careful. I spent 8 hours trying to remove this virus! Then I came across an article about this company in Newsweek They are trying to be legit - so as a last resort I tried the tool It seems to have worked, with no ill effects. I was just trying to save some people some headache. Those other processes for removal sounded just as scary for me. All I can say, is it worked for me and my spyware scan comes up clean….
Bafrhf… The link you posted is to a site that apart from uninstalling Aurora also inventories your hard disc and leaves a marker on it so they know they've been there. That makes them no less better than the original Aurora infection!
