Hello veegez, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. If you still need help please follow these instructions in the posted order.

I absolutely cannot get rid of the nail.exe file/and the random exe files that regenerate after deleting them. Can someone help me with the removal of this Aurora/ABI Network adware crud?

1) Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please go to the following website
http://www.noidea.us/easyfile/file.php?dow…050515010747824
. Click on Spyware Utilities.
. Then click on Nail/Aurora Fix
download Nailfix.exe
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly — this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

Next please run HijackThis, click Scan, and put a check mark beside:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

2) Before you post the two requested logs, You are running HJT.exe from a .zip file in a Temporary Directory. This is unsafe as we will have no backups. Please use the ingofmation in the following links to place HJT in a permanent, safe folder. Thanks.

Thanks PS very much for your help. Here are the Two logs you requested. Looks like Nail.exe is gone, as well as the Aurora registry items. Let me know if I need to clean anything else up.

Thanks again,

Hello veegez, I see see the log item:
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe in the log even though you said this:

(I removed the F2 Nail.exe item)

If Nail is gone from your system, then you will be able to remove it with HijackThis.

Here were the steps in the fix:
You will need to be in safe mode:
For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Next please run HijackThis, click Scan, and put a check mark beside:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Once you have removed that line with HJT, post a new log. If HJT will not remove the line, then I suggest you run through the fix again, at least the parts dealing with the nail fix.

Thanks…pskelley
Nail.exe is gone, although now, I seem to have some interesting security issues, as I cannot access secure websites anymore since the fix. Also, sgtray will not load. Weird. I may just end up reformatting and reloading Windows as things are getting worse, not better.

I don't see much wrong in the log, I am trying to get some information about what this infection might have changed on your computer. Try taking a look in Internet Explorer under the Security Tab. Click on Trusted Sites then click the sites button. Try adding the secure sites here. I have not had this issue with other Aurora/Nail fixes.

I want to be sure you know both of these programs, there is not much information available.
C:\Program Files\Pointsec\P95tray.exe is this it:
http://www.pointsec.com/core/default.asp

and this one:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\avlogsvc.exe is this it:
http://www.computerhope.com/comp/digital.htm

You said this:

I seem to have some interesting security issues, as I cannot access secure websites anymore since the fix.

Are secure websites the only ones you are having issues with? If so it probably means something in your security settings in IE has been effected.

Also, sgtray will not load. Are you talking about this: http://castlecops.com/s3312-sgtray_exe.html
http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintas…library/sgtray/

Can you supply me with any error messages you are receiving about SGTray, word for word.

Thanks…pskelley
There was a setting in my Windows Firewall that somehow got changed. I reset the medium security settings in IE and allowed UPnP Framework in the Firewall settings.

Pointsec is a security program that came with my computer,
avlogsvc.exe is a tunnel program by Alta Vista, also software that was on the computer (wife's old bank computer), should be ok.

The SGTRAY message is because apparently I deleted a program file related to IBM RecordNow, a CD burning program. It wants to find the missing file upon startup, and I don't need it (I have other burning programs that I use) is it in startup anywhere? I'll check.

Alright PS, I fixed the sgtray/IBM RecordNow issue I had, and the computer continues to be spyware free according to MSAS. I'm going to add McAfee Security Center to my computer and call it fixed. Thanks for all of your help! I appreciate what you do greatly. -veegez

Thanks for all of your help! I appreciate what you do greatly.

veegez, you are very welcome. :) You seem to know you way around a computer, if you every want to learn more about this process, to increase your knowledge or even to help others, free training classes are available at several forums. Just let one of us know if you ever need information.

With the information you gave me about items I was in doubt of and you troubleshooting the balance of the issues, you have a clean HJT logfile. Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

I would read over the above information before adding the McAfee Security Center. I have nothing against McAfee, in fact I use VSO on three computers. Do yourself a favor and collect a little information before jumping into what might be a big resource burden. Get some feedback from others first. I use McAfee VSO and free Zone Alarm. Since you have SP2, the firewall should be strong enough that all you need is antivirus and some of the freeware programs that will be discussed above.

In case I did not mention it, don't forget to purge your System Restore in case some of that junk got into your SR files and could get back onboard if you used SR for a valid reason. Details:

Good luck and safe surfing…Phil
