I should have gone into more detail about the problems I'm having in my original post and for that I apologize. 1)I notice "crazywinnings" puts itself under trusted site in security settings in IE and I can't get him off. 2)I have two porn related URL's that have insinuated themselves into "favorites" and I can't get them off. 3)My start page on IE should be aboutblank, but I get a search engine with all the lovely human vices and can't get rid of it. 4) I get an "Only the Best" popup ad that popup killer can't stop. 5)Teatimer notifies me of several suspicious registry changes. 6)Lastly, I must have some type of autodialer because I had a $40 phone call to Reno, NV for some service I did't sign up for (the phone co. blocked the number and told me I don't have to pay). I know I have alot going on here and I was hoping someone more technical than myself could help me out. I have Norton, Adaware Se, Spamkiller, Historykill, CWShredder, Spybot 1.99.
Hello PatrickM and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Sorry about the delay in getting to you.

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
  • Prepare CWShredder for use:
    • Download CWShredder.
    • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Prepare AboutBuster for use:
    • Download AboutBuster.
    • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
    • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
    • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
    • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
    • You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".
  • Prepare cwsserviceremove.reg for use:
    • Download cwsserviceremove.zip.
    • Unzip the contents of cwsserviceremove.zip (cwsserviceremove.reg) to your desktop.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.
  • Run CWShredder:
    • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
    • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
    • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
    • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
  • Remove the offending service:
    • Double-click on cwsserviceremove.reg you downloaded earlier.
    • When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click "Yes".
  • Run AboutBuster and save the logs:
    • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click OK at the directions prompt.
    • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
    • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
    • It will begin to your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
    • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I need a copy of it.
  • Clean out temporary files:
    • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
    • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
    • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
    • Click "OK" to remove them.
    • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
  • Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.
  • Free TrendMicro Housecall scan:
    • Vist the TrendMicro Housecall website.
    • Select your country from the drop-down list and click "Go".
    • Choose "Yes" at the ActiveX Security Warning prompt.
    • Please wait while the Housecall engine is updated.
    • Select the drives to be scanned by placing a check in their respective boxes.
    • Check the "Auto Clean" box.
    • Click "SCAN" in order to begin scanning your system.
    • Please be patient while Housecall scans your system for malicious files.
    • If not auto-cleaned, remove anything it finds.
    • Click "Close" to exit the Housecall scanner.
    • Choose "Yes" at the HouseCall message prompt.
  • Prepare your reply:
    • Please post a fresh HijackThis log
    • Please post the AboutBuster log.
    • Please note any complications you had.
Thank you for your reply. I followed your instructions. CWShredder found nothing, ran cwsserviceremove.reg and Aboutbuster. Upon rebooting in normal mode, teatimer warned me about 8-10 registry changes and I denied all of them. Should I have done that? Problems with Housecall: I didn't receive an ActiveX Security prompt, I didn't see an "Auto Clean" option. I had three options and chose virus/securtity scan. I tried four separate times to run Housecall and it would freeze for hours at 94597 files, c:\pagefile.sys, 50 threats found, and would go no further. Here is my HijackThis.log and AboutBuster.log. Tell me what you think.

Attempted Clean Of Temp folder.
Pages Reset… Done!
Step 1
Please update to HijackThis 1.99.1. (Open HijackThis and click config.. < Misc. Tools and click Check for Update Online.)

Step 2
You have Spybot S&D's Teatimer running which is good, but we need you to disable it for the remainder of the fix as it will interfere with the registry changes being made.
Open Spybot S&D in advanced mode, click Tools > Resident, and remove the check from "Resident Tea-Timer".
Reboot the computer into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').

Step 3
Run the AboutBuster again.
Click OK at the directions prompt.
Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
It will begin to your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I need a copy of it.

Step 4
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\smdfk.dll/sp.html#12345
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\smdfk.dll/sp.html#12345
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\smdfk.dll/sp.html#12345
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\smdfk.dll/sp.html#12345
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\smdfk.dll/sp.html#12345
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\smdfk.dll/sp.html#12345

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tibs5] C:\WINDOWS\System32\tibs5.exe

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.frame.crazywinnings.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.frame.crazywinnings.com (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted IP range: (HKLM)

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 5
Please set your computer to show all files.

* Double-click My Computer.
* Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.
* Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
* Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
* Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Step 6
Please delete the following files/folders:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\tibs5.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\smdfk.dll

Step 7
Reboot normally. Run at least two of the following online virus scans making sure to reboot in between each one. Allow them to fix anything they find.
You need to use Internet Explorer or Netscape browsers.
Bitdefender
Pandasoftware
Symantec Security Check << click scan for viruses
RAV Online Virus Scanner << Enter your e-mail address and click on To continue without subscribing
McAfee

Write down anything that can not be fixed. Include the file name and the path to the file.

Step 8
Scan with HijackThis. Post the new HijackThis log and the AboutBuster log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications and how the computer is behaving.
Sorry it took so long to get back to you.
Steps 1-5: No problems other than the fact that although I checked the removal boxes for "crazywinnings" in HJT, he's still hanging around. Start page problem solved. Only one unwanted item in IE Favorites; Sites About folder (loaded with links to drug sites ect.). All others are gone.
Step 6: Files weren't there to delete.
Step 7: Ran all of them. Bitfinder found 29 and fixed them. Panda found four but didn't disinfect or give path/ or file locations. Symantec found nothing (I'm not suprised). RAV found a bunch of stuff and I'll show you what he found. McAfee found 12 and I'll show you what he found.

No ADS found on system
Attempted Clean Of Temp folder.
Pages Reset… Done!
Almost done. :)

Step 1
Download this file to your desktop.
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select Install.

Note : Since the Domains are deleted SpywareBlaster protection must be re-enabled, Spybot's Immunize feature must be used again, and you'll also have to re-install IE-SpyAd if installed.

Step 2
Reboot the computer into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').

Delete the following files.

C:\WINDOWS\Active Setup Log.txt
C:\WINDOWS\Blue Lace 16.bmp
C:\WINDOWS\Blue Lace 16.bmp
C:\WINDOWS\KB839643-DirectX9.log
C:\WINDOWS\KB840374.log
C:\WINDOWS\setupapi.log
C:\WINDOWS\WMSysPr9.prx
C:\WINDOWS\_DEFAULT.PIF
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mmcpa.dll

Step 3
Reboot normally. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the Performance tab, click File System, or press ALT+F.
3. On the Troubleshooting tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
4. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 3, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

Step 4
MOST IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and IE to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the internet.
I recommend going to the following link and update to SP2. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer.
Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates

Here is a great link that explains the procedure for updating to SP2 with less complications.

Step 5
Scan with HijackThis and post the new log as a reply to this thread.
I'm utterly impressed. As far as I can tell, I can find no issues with IE/Windows. I have "been reborn" with a new attitude toward security and feel I've learned a great deal through the assistance you and this site has provided. I'm extremely grateful.

Your new log is clean.:)

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

AVG AntiVirus - Free antivirus program if you currently are not using one.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.
