I have yet to find the "magic bullet" for these types of files.

Most of the time Ewido will get rid of them.

The next step is Killbox. It works sometimes.

Sometimes just booting in "safe" mode and fixing it works.

Let's try something I've used on Aurora infections that has been successful.

Copy the contents of the following quote box into Notepad.

cd c:\windows\system32
dir > pmjaar.exe

Save it to your desktop as kn.bat.

Boot in "safe" mode.

the kn.bat file on the desktop. A DOS window will briefly flash on the screen.

Reboot in normal mode.

An error may appear, but that's OK.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!
Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KavSvc] C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmjaar.exe reg_run

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Delete:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmjaar.exe <— file

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and make a new log file.

If it's still there, reboot in "safe mode" and run Ewido once more per my previous instructions and let me know if that cures it this time. Sometimes another Ewido scan will remove it when the 1st scan fails.

:)
No go… That scan with ewido takes a long time, but it is still there…

All is not lost….

These efforts make me believe that something else is lurking that re-installs the bug after a reboot.

The most common place for these "ghosts" to hide is "temp" file areas.

So lets' explore that avenue.

Download CleanUp
Install the program, dont run it yet, we will later.

Boot in "safe" mode.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!
Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KavSvc] C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmjaar.exe reg_run

Find and delete:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmjaar.exe <— file

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Now run the CleanUp program:

*IMPORTANT NOTE*
CleanUp deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups.
If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp

Running CleanUp
  • Start CleanUp by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
  • When CleanUp starts go to the Options button (right side of CleanUp screen)
  • Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
  • Now place a checkmark next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
    • Delete Cookies
This is optional, if you leave the box checked it will remove all of your cookies, at this point removing cookies is a good idea
    • Empty Recycle Bins
    • Delete Prefetch files
    • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click OK
  • Then click on the CleanUp button. This will take a short while, let it do its thing.
  • When asked to reboot system select No
  • Close CleanUp

  • Reboot in normal mode and make/post a new log file.

    :)
Sorry, but it is still there. I think it really likes me!!

After the reboot, "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
It looks like you may have done it (??) If it looks like it to you , do you now why my quick launch toolbar will no longer work. I get an error when I try to active it. It was working before we started this whole process.

SUCCESS!!!!!

:D

Try this to get the Quick Launch Toolbar:

Bring back the Quicklaunch toolbar

Let me know if that works.
:)

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.

when I try to open the quick launch toolbar I get a red x that says cannot create toolbar. I loaded the ie-spyed, so hopefully this will not get this bad again. Any help with the tollbar would be appreciated.
I was able to get my quick launch working again by using the following tool, but one other thing that was occuring before and I am not sure why. When I click on my internet explorer shortcut on the quick launch toolbar it goes to 1.0.0.0.0. instead of my home page. If I delete the short cut and readd it, it does the same thing. Any ideas on this??

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm
Try this:

1. Start IE and go to your home page

2. At the top of the IE page click on:

Tools –> Internet Options

3. At the top of the dialogue box that appears, the address of your home page should be in it. Under that there is a button Use current (should set IE home page to the one you are on). Click that then Apply then OK.

Give that a try.
