Hi and welcome to TomCoyote, you have a trojan called Vundo. We have a fix but it is important that you follow the directions carefully.

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning.
    It should look like this

    VundoFix V2.15 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
    Press enter to continue....

  • At this point press enter one time.
  • Next you will see:

Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
    and then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrq.dll
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum
    staff then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):C:\WINDOWS\system32\qrqss.*
This will be the vundo filename spelt backwards. for example if the vundo dll was vundo.dll you would have the user enter odnuv.*
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open, if it does not open automatically please open it manually.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {B313D637-F405-4052-AC37-E2119AB3C8F8} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrq.dll
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {a19ef336-01d4-48e6-926a-fe7e1c747aed} - (no file)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: ssqrq - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrq.dll
  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
  • Press enter to exit the program then manually reboot your computer.
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Thanks...pskelley

Hello, before we start I need to know if you ran the active scan before you ran the Vundofox? I also need to know if the issues you were experiencing stopped once the VundoFix killed the trojan?
c:\windows\system32\ssqrq.dll Deleted sucessfully
c:\windows\system32\qrqss.* Deleted sucessfully

Please follow these instructions in the posted order.

1) Ewido scan: Unless you think an item is not bad, have ewido delete everything it locates.
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

2) Microsoft AntiSpyware will block the HJT fix we must make, use these directions...be offline and make sure you enable MAS before going back online.
Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck: Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck: Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(you can remove any of the Yahoo R1/R0 lines you don't use, click the link to see)
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.h...sario&pf=laptop
O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {B313D637-F405-4052-AC37-E2119AB3C8F8} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrq.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {a19ef336-01d4-48e6-926a-fe7e1c747aed} - (no file)
(next is not needed unless you want HP for a StartPage)
O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&tp=iehome&locale=EN_US&c=Q105&bd=presario&pf=laptop
O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://download.game...aploader_v6.cab
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ssqrq - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrq.dll (file missing)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete everything in this folder (NOT THE FOLDER)
Prefetch info: http://www.windowsne...refetch-XP.html

If you can't find the folder, use these instructions:
Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.
http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html

Empty the recycle bin and restart the computer. Post the ewido scan results and a new HJT log.

Thanks...Phil

I noticed this: Java is out of date and a security issue. Open the Control Panel and locate the coffee cup. Open the console and locate the update feature. If no one is going to do this manually, I would set it to autoupdates.

When you are completely finished with the removal procedure and are satisfied that the threat has been removed follow these instructions:
