I keep getting annoying popup ads. It all started when I put this stupid program called netpumper on my computer. When I tried to use it, the popups started even though my pop up blockers were on. I uninstalled netpumper and the ads still kept popping up and I have run Spybot, Ad Aware, Spydoctor, AntiVir, Mcafee virus scan and all have removed all trojans and spyware programs but yet I still keep getting popup ads. Please figure out what's wrong. Thanks! Here is the log:

Go to these web sites:

Kaspersky Online File Scan

Jotti Online File Scan

And submit this file for a virus scan:

C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe

If it comes back "clean", then you're good to go!

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.

Hi, I scanned the file. On the first site it said nothing was found. But on the second site it said it was infected/malware. Also the file is called wmplayer.exe.tmp on my computer. I didn't see wmplayer.exe by itself. I was afraid of that….. :(

What version of Media Player do you have?

If you have version 7, 8, or 9, you can go to this page and follow the link to download it again to replace your infected copy.

After you get the new media player installed, be sure to submit the wmplayer.exe file to be scanned for a virus again.

Another approach might be to try these online virus scans to see if they will "clean" your exisitng copy of Media Player first:

Trend-Micro Housecall

Panda Activescan

Etrust Security Advisor

Choose "fix" or "clean".

Let them remove any infections found. Reboot after each scan.

The scans may take a while depending on your hard drive size and computer speed.

I think the best approach would be to do the online virus scans first. If they can't fix your existing file, then I'd try to replace it with a new one.

If they are successfull at "cleaning" your exisiting file, they should tell you.

Post back and let me know how things are going.
