I was using ZoomBrowser to burn pictures to a CD and received a message about
virtual memory minimum too low and the computer was going to do something about paging. When I open task manager, I have to admit I don't understand a lot of what is there under the tab-performance. I do know that total Physical Memory does not seem to be what I thought I bought when I got this computer.
I thought the computer came with 512mb ddr sdram memory but the total physical memory comes up as 392688. Thank you.

hmm.. thats saying you have a little over 3gb of ram.. which if that were the case, you wouldnt need a paging file at all. But a good rule of thumb is that .. up to about 1gb of ram.. you want to set your paging file (Virtual memory) at 1.5 x amount of ram. However, if you have 3gb of ram..or even just 1gb of ram.. I wouldnt set page file over 1500.. to find out what it is set at, go into control panel and click on "System" then under the "advanced" tab, next to Performance click settings. Then again under the "advanced" tab at the bottom you will what your virtual memory is set on.
Post back and tell us what it is set to
Ok well lets double check your ram, then we'll go from there. Click here to visit Belarc.com and download the "Belarc Advisor".. its a great little app… will show everything.. everything.. on your computer. After you do that then post back on how much ram total you have.,
Thank you, sorry it took so long, had a family crisis. Here is what Belarc came up with.

Ok.. go to control panel and click on "System". Then under the "advanced" tab click on the "settings" button in the Performance section. Again under the "advanced" tab click on "change" in the virtual memory section. Highlight the drive your pagefile is on (it will be on the the drive you installed Windows to unless you moved it.. it will show it there regaurdless) and click "Custom Size" then set the minimum to 2mb and the max to 800.. then click set.. if you get a popup then just click ok and then apply..then ok.. apply… ok… etc..etc.. Make sure you however that you DO click on apply and ok to close each window and will ask you to reboot..
run that for awhile and post back if problems still occur.
(Sorry I wasnt more specific there on belarc results.. I went ahead and edited the software licsensing part out)
This may be of interest:
If your system has a paging file it will use it, even if you have far more physical ram than you need. Therefore, if the paging file is too small you can encounter problems, despite having oodles (technical term) of physical ram free. This situation sometimes occurs when you install extra memory and an imbalance is caused between the page file and physical ram sizes. There are many theories about how big your page file should be, but it does need to be at least as big as your physical memory size.
Also related:
If you think your system has 256Mb of physical memory but always shows 224Mb then this is probably down to your video card. Some video cards have no memory of their own and "share" system memory. In the example given the video card has "shared" (i.e. stolen) 32Mb of system memory for its own exclusive use.
