Adaware and Spybot are powerless against these popups. If I turn on a pop-up stopper I get constant script errors. Here's the log:

Hello Fry and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Download this tool : LQfix.zip
  • Unzip it to your Desktop.
  • Don't use it yet!
IMPORTANT! Reboot the computer into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').

Doubleclick LQfix.bat that you saved on your desktop before.A dos window will open and close again, that is normal.
Reboot back into normal mode. I see that you are using AVG6 antivirus on your computer. This program is not supported anymore and is out-of-date. Please uninstall it with Add/Remove Programs. Download AVG7 from here. Install the program, check for updates and run a scan with it.

I see that you are running msconfig in /auto mode which means that you may have selectively removed some items in the past from the startup procedure. This can be bad if they are malware, so we would like you to re-enable those startup entries by doing the following:

Please click on start < run, and type msconfig and then press enter. When the window opens click on the startup tab and make sure there are checkmarks in every entry. Then press ok until you are out of the program. If it asks to reboot, do not reboot.

Now please create a new Hijackthis Log and post it as a reply to this thread. You may now uncheck all of those items again in msconfig.
Thanks for your help! I did everything you said. Here's the latest log.

It doesn't look like the Lqfix.bat worked. You did run it in safe mode, correct?

Step 1
IMPORTANT! Reboot the computer into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').

Doubleclick LQfix.bat that you saved on your desktop before.

A dos window will open and close again, that is normal.

Step 2
While still in Safe Mode open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about:blank
O1 - Hosts: 65.120.116.172 mini.aimster.com

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [C:\WINDOWS\VCMnet11.exe] C:\WINDOWS\VCMnet11.exe

O20 - Winlogon Notify: iexplore - F\cf0.dll (file missing)

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 3
Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove the following items (if found):

WeirdOnTheWeb
Web search toolbar
Win-tools easy installer

Step 4
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 5
Please delete the following files/folders:

C:\WINDOWS\VCMnet11.exe << File Only
C:\WINDOWS\cfgmgr52.dll << File Only
C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe << File Only
C:\WINDOWS\System32\winupdt.exe << File Only
c:\windows\system32\eukqena.exe << File Only
C:\windows\system32\eliteizb32.exe << File Only
C:\WINDOWS\System32\vxblock.exe << File Only
C:\WINDOWS\System32\csrdko.exe << File Only

C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools << Whole Folder
C:\Program Files\WeirdOnTheWeb << Whole Folder
C:\Program Files\Toolbar << Whole Folder
C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker << Whole Folder

You'll need to search for these files with Explorer to delete. They may be in C:\WINDOWS\system32\ or C:\WINDOWS\
(Start > Search > All files and folders > More advanced options place a check in the first three boxes)

clilock.exe
AUNPS2.DLL
btnocvw.exe

If you have any problem deleting these items, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 6
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Okie dokie, followed your instructions exactly. Here's what I've found:

While still in Safe Mode open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [checkrun] C:\windows\system32\eliteizb32.exe

This wasn't there.

Step 3
Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove the following items (if found):

WeirdOnTheWeb
Web search toolbar
Win-tools easy installer

Didn't see any of those.

Step 5
Please delete the following files/folders:

C:\WINDOWS\VCMnet11.exe << File Only
- Deleted this one

C:\WINDOWS\cfgmgr52.dll << File Only
- Deleted this one

C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe << File Only
- Didn't find this one

C:\WINDOWS\System32\winupdt.exe << File Only
- Didn't find this, but there was a winupdt.bin and winupdt.008

c:\windows\system32\eukqena.exe << File Only
- Not there

C:\windows\system32\eliteizb32.exe << File Only
- Not there

C:\WINDOWS\System32\vxblock.exe << File Only
- Not there, but there was vxblock.dll

C:\WINDOWS\System32\csrdko.exe << File Only
- Not there

C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools << Whole Folder
C:\Program Files\WeirdOnTheWeb << Whole Folder
C:\Program Files\Toolbar << Whole Folder
C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker << Whole Folder
- None of these were there.

clilock.exe
AUNPS2.DLL
btnocvw.exe
- Search didn't find any of these.

So, I'm still getting pop-ups, but now they're different pop-ups than before. After I rebooted from Safe Mode I noticed a bunch of new icons on my desktop, with names like "Spyware Nuker" and "Free X Box." There's also a new folder in my favorite called "1111" and a little doggie icon called "Cash Back Pays you to Shop!" (I've been shopping for free my whole life and I'd like to keep it that way).

I was going to just run Ad-Aware and Spybot but thought I should get your advice first. Here is my latest HijackThis log:

Again, thanks for all your help with this.
That new log appears clean of malware. I'll suggest a couple of optional items to remove and give some recommendations to better secure the computer.

Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

Optional items to check with HijackThis for improved performance.
This is a registration reminder that is used by a number of different companies. It is not needed and some experts think that it reports back to the company about your computer, so I suggest fixing it.
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe

Resource hog that launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. Some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it isn't required either way.
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
ie-spyad - Puts over 12,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Here are three very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
AdAware SE v1.06
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D and Adaware SE
a² Free Trojan Remover

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
