Hello… I'm running Windows XP, I've gotten rid of most of the pop-ups, but there is something still going undetected by ad aware and spy bot. I'm still getting pop ups and when I'm typing on the internet it'll just randomly not show what I'm typing because my computers attention has been directed to something else so I'll have to click on the text box again and retype everything… (if that makes sense).

Recently Norton anti-virus detected 3 trojans on my computer if that helps you guys figure out what's going on…

Here is the log I got from HJT:

Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

Please make a PERMANANT folder for Hijack This!

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT. MOVE HijackThis into this folder.

If required a tutorial is here = Hijackthis Folder Tutorial

Download Killbox from here:

Killbox.zip

Then unzip it, BUT DON'T RUN IT YET!

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = :0

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {EA0A36B0-4903-426F-A7EA-D9CD405CED17} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [epx30105] C:\WINDOWS\System32\epx30105.exe

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.neededware.com

Then click "Fix checked".

Run Killbox and paste the next line into the "Full Path of File to Delete" text box.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\epx30105.exe

Check the button to the left of "Delete on Reboot".

Click the red dot with the white X in it, in the upper right of Killbox, then click "Yes".

After the reboot, "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)

Recently Norton anti-virus detected 3 trojans on my computer

Have they been eliminated?

If not, can you post the "full path names" (i.e. "C:\windows\virus.exe") of the trojans?
Thank you for responding. About the trojans, Norton couldn't fix or quarantine them so I had to delete the files. I ran another virus scan and nothing showed up.

Here is my new log:

I deleted both O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.neededware.com and O16 - DPF: NDWCab - http://www.neededware.com/ndw3.cab,

but O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.neededware.com is still there for some reason.

Also, if I'm right about this then you probably already know this… I think C:\WINDOWS\System32\lapfwx.exe just took the place of O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [epx30105] C:\WINDOWS\System32\epx30105.exe.

Sometimes when I open up task manager and try to close a process with a bunch of funny letters, it'll close but another process with a different bunch of funny letters opens. Also, I ran msconfig to stop this file called something like tempx.exe (which I think is also related to epx30105.exe) from opening up when I started up my computer. Before my computer restarted, an alert popped up saying it was closing epx30105.exe… except the letters were spaced out funny like this e_x_p_3_0_1_0_5.

* oh yeah, also after I had gotten rid of exp30105.exe with HJT, I did another scan and that tempx.exe file and two other files with random letters showed up as programs to open at start up. I fixed them with HJT and then had success deleting them with killbox, but it wasnt able to delete tempx.exe for some reason. Umm… so I hope I didn't mess anything up that you were trying to do. Sorry if I did. Thanks again by the way.
Hmmm…. Sometimes these critters die hard <_<

I see you have Norton Antivirus. Is it fully up to date?

It's supposed to remove "neededware".

Here's their page on that adware:

Symantec - Neededware

If your Norton is up to date (if not please update it), and you haven't done a "full system scan" recently, try that first.

Then, let's try some free online removal tools before we go too much further. I'm concerned about the other things that you have been seeing in the task manager. Something has to be lurking somewhere…

Please try these free online virus scans of your system:

Trend-Micro Housecall

Panda Activescan

Etrust Security Advisor

Choose "fix" or "clean".

Let them remove any infections found. Make notes of things they find but can't remove. Write down the "full path names" (i.e "C:\Windows\virus.exe") of files found but not removed. Reboot after each scan.

When finished, make another HJT log file & "copy/paste" it into this thread.

Also supply the "full path names" of things found but not removed during the online scans.

:)
Norton should be up to date… I ran live update, atleast 2 times in the past week.

Trend-Micro Housecall found 6 infections… all were "deleted" accept accept troj ndware.b… the path name for it is C:\WINDOWS\system32\tempx.exe

Etrust Security Advisor found something like 6 infections and fixed all but these two: tempx.exe Win32.Lastad.G… path name: C:\WINDOWS\system32\
tempxaeg05.dll Win32.Lastad.G… path name: C:\WINDOWS\system32\

Panda Activscan found a total of 91 viruses and adware/spyware. I started my computer in safe mode and deleted all the files that couldn't be disinfected… probably a bad idea, but I act before I think. By the way some of the files it found, I couldn't find when I followed their path name. Also I didn't know how to get rid of the things in the registry… here is the log from that scan:

Incident Status Location

Adware:Adware/eZula – No disinfected – Windows Registry
Spyware:Spyware/TVMedia – No disinfected – C:\Documents and Settings\Britt\Application Data\tvm*.dll

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.neededware.com

Then click "Fix checked".

Emtpy the recycle bin then reboot & make another log file.

If that trusted zone entry is still there do this:

Download the DelDomains.inf file to your desktop from the link below. on the link below and select Save Target As, then Save.

Domains Deleter

on the deldomains.inf file and select Install.

Note : Since ALL IE "Restricted Zone" Domains are deleted after using this fix, Spybot's Immunize feature must be used again, and you'll also have to re-install IE-SpyAd if installed.

Reboot and make another log file to be sure it's gone.

Let me know if you had problems removing anything.
:)
Thank you so much for your help. I couldn't find the first 5 things you told me delete. They weren't in the application data folder. I deleted limewire, and neededware.com is finally gone from my HJT log. Here is my latest log:

Thank you again for your help!
One minor little fix & you're good to go.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O8 - Extra context menu item: LimeShop Preferences - file://C:\Program Files\LimeShop\System\Temp\limeshop_script0.htm

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot. And you're all set.

GOD bless you and yours!!!

M68 :)

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
