A couple of days ago, I started to get the error message "winldra caused and error in " every time I booted up my machine. Having checked, the file winldra.exe is sitting in my C:\Windows\System folder. From what I've read, this seems to suggest that I've acquired a Trojan (NIBU.J??) that logs keystrokes and occasionally send them to a third party, but the antivirus software on my PC isn't detecting it in spite of a manual download of the latest virus definitions file. In fact, it's detecting another 3 files which is says are Trojans but it's unable to delete any of them. My antivirus software also appears to be running very slowly and I don't know if it's been affected in some way. I'm getting worried that my machine may be a festering pile of undetected Trojans and Spyware and I'd be grateful for any help you can offer. I've downloaded and run Hijack This, and the log file which it produced is as follows:

Hello treedoc, Welcome to the forum.

Important: Do this before any fix.

You need to update your version of HijackThis. Open HJT> Open Misc Tools> Pull the side bar down> Check for update online. If that doesn't work, download it from my signature and remove the hijackThis.exe you have now.

Also please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

After the above:

Download DelDomains.inf
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

Right-click and select….. Save Target As….Save

To use: Right-click and select……. Install (no need to restart)
**Note** This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone"

This is what I suggest you do next:

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi LDTate - thanks so much for your reply. At present, my machine is booting up OK apart from the error message that I described. However, Norton AV is behaving pretty oddly: it took about 6 hours to do a scan of my hard disk that would usually take 45 mins and then was unable to delete any of the "risks" that it detected. The main symptom apart from that is that Internet Explorer is behaving pretty oddly - long delays at startup before it will connect to my homepage and then all of my "Favorites" list is still greyed out. If I click on something on the Favorites list at that stage then I'm prompted to use my dialup connection even though it's already been established. Usually a shutdown and reboot is needed to get past this problem. As you'll have guessed, this is all pretty new to me and I think it will take me a while to run through all of your instructions. I installed HJT from a self-extracting zip and it created its own folder in C:\Program files, so at the minute it's located on its own in C:\Program Files\Hijack This. However, when I replace it with the current version, I'll put it in C:\HJT as per your instructions. Thanks again for your help - I'll post a new log file once I've followed all of the steps you've set out.
Hi LDTate - I've just finished following your list of instructions which took me a while but I wanted to be sure that I got it right:
1. Updated copy of HJT installed in C:\HJT
2. DelDomains.inf downloaded and installed
3. CWShredder (v2.15) installed and run
4. Ran TrendMicro housecall - 5 Trojans identified and all deleted successfully
5. Ran eTrust Antivirus - no viruses / Trojans detected
6. Re-ran Spybot S&D (v1.4) - detected 6 cookies and deleted
7. Installed and ran Ad-Aware (build 1.06r1) - huge number of problems found! All resolved bar one which related to a file in the Restore subdirectory(C:\_Restore\Temp\A0000135.cpy)

On bootup I now get a "Repair Successful" message from Norton AV relating to the file C:\Windows\dvpd.dll. When I click OK to this message it's followed by the error message "Winldra caused an error in " and a suggestion to restart the computer if there is a persistent problem. First couple of attempts to use my dialup connection after the cleanup resulted in a blank screen part way through the process and an automatic reboot. Seems to have settled down now though…. The only other odd behaviour that my machine has displayed since the Winldra message started appearing is that sometimes it "hunts" for a long time after I've clicked on "My Computer" and I see a flashlight for 3 or 4 minutes before I finally see all of the drives on the machine.

Winldra.exe is still sitting in the C:\Windows\System folder and the latest HJT log follows. Any advice you can give will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry about the downloads, but you still have some bad guys.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then please run Ewido, run a full scan and let it clean everything it finds. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.
Hi - I'm not worried about the number of downloads and am just grateful that you're out there to lend me a hand. I'd be completely messed up by all of this stuff otherwise. Unfortunately, I can't install the Ewido Security Suite because when I double-click the executable to set it up I'm getting back a message that it will only run on Windows 2000 / XP (I'm afraid I'm still on Windows Me). Are there any alternatives worth trying?
We'll try a manual fix then.

I suggest you do this:

Download Pocket Killbox version 2.0.0.175
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/KillBox.exe
If you already have Killbox first ensure it is this version !.

Start Killbox, Use standard file kill.(default settings).
Copy this whole list into the windows clipboard, all the Bolded below.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\winldra.exe

Back in Killbox go > file > paste from clipboard, now click the red X
that looks like a stop sign, wait until a success message appears.
Repeat those same step's until each file has been deleted.

Note: if a file cannot be deleted [x] check delete on reboot, then go back to
standard file kill for the next file in the list.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Optional Resource hogs.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\QTTASK.EXE" -atboottime

O4 - Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press the F8 key until the startup menu appears.

Choose the Safe Mode option then press Enter.

To configure Windows to show all files

Do the following:
In Windows, on the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.

On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.

Uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, click Show hidden files and folders.
If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

Search for and delete these files if listed:
C:\Windows\dvpd.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\winldra.exe

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thank you! Things definitely appear to be "on the mend". Killbox deleted winldra.exe from the C:\Windows\System folder and all of the items checked in HJT appeared to be dealt with. No sign of C:\Windows\dvpd.dll or C:\Windows\System\winldra.exe when I checked in Safe Mode. However, a copy of winldra.exe was present in what appeared to be a new folder on my hard disk - C:\!Submit\. Since this folder only contained winldra.exe I deleted it. I cleaned out C:\Windows\Temp but I couldn't find a folder equivalent to C:\Documents and Settings\..\Local Settings\Temp. I did manage to clear all of the Temporary Internet Files as instructed, though.

After that, I downloaded the latest Norton AV definitions using the intelligent updater and ran a check on my hard disk. Norton detected 2 threats, neither of which it was able to delete: information.exe (which it says is Adware) and eied s7 c 80.exe (which it says is a Trojan). On the BIG plus side, I'm no longer getting a message from Norton about "fixing" dvpd.dll at startup, nor am I getting the original error message about winldra causing an error in . The performance of Norton AV appears to be a whole lot speedier now and, so far, when I use "My Computer" there is no delay in detecting / displaying the drives on my system. One "oddness" is that C:\HJT has acquired a sub-directory that I'm sure I didn't create - C:\HJT\backups - is there any reason why this should have appeared?

The latest HJT log is as follows:

Thanks again, I'm really grateful for your time and advice. I followed all of your instructions: couldn't find information.exe, but eied s7 c 80.exe was inside a cabinet file of the same name and I deleted it. Running Cleanup binned a pretty alarming number of files but all is OK. System is booting up fine and there are no problems when running "My Computer". There was a slight glitch when starting Internet Explorer (blue screen at connection) but the "press any key" option kept the window open without crashing the system. My latest offering on the log file front is as follows:

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. In my signature below is also a tutorial on how to harden IE, a good read and very helpful to stop these things in the future. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on.

Safe Surfing. :D
Hi LDTate Sorry it's taken a while to post a reply to your message. A day of work has interrupted the process of downloading and enabling the software you recommended - just when I was really starting to enjoy re-booting my machine every 5 minutes ;) Although I do have a firewall and antivirus, this whole episode has shaken my confidence in them (I worry about the antivirus in particular - how did some of these things sneak in under it's radar??) so I think I'll bin them and install the ones you provided links to instead. So, all of the protection seems to be in place. However, I couldn't find your tutorial on toughening up IE (I'm afraid that I'm getting a little punchy from sitting in front of the PC for too long) - where should I go for this? Last but not least, my sincere thanks for all of the time and trouble that you've gone to over the last few days to get my system sorted out. There's no way I could have got out of this one without your help and, believe me, I appreciate it. All the best - treedoc :D
