Hi guys,

I need help with whatever is affecting my system. I keep getting a message from NAV stating that my pc is infected with the Download.Trojan virus, and that they have automatically deleted it.

I read the forums and noticed that the file WindowsSys32e.exe is also virus/worm related, and along with it a c.bat file is also created, so I removed those two, but it seems they will recur too.

I ran Norton Anti-Virus and did a scan to make sure there are no more viruses, and also used AdAware to scan the computer. Both have the latest definitions, after which, I rebooted and did a HiJackThis scan and this is the logfile.

Hello,

Thanks for replying :)

So far, the virus alert has stopped after I installed a wireless router to my system, but I dunno if it's clean. I just scanned the system with Ad Aware and here is the HiJackThis report:

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 3
These files appear to be a new variant of the WIN32.RBOT WORM.

C:\WINNT\System32\WinsService.exe
C:\WINNT\System32\WindowsSys32e.exe

Please submit the files (one at a time) to the following link for a scan.
http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Let me know the results of the scan.

Step 4
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Hi Alan,

Thanks for your help.

Did as I was told, and tired to submit the two files you mentioned for scanning, however, this message appeared:
The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading the file.

I checked the two files, and they are indeed 0 bytes, so I deleted them.

Here's a new HijackThis scan :)

We need to run a couple of online scans to see if anything else is hiding on the computer.

Run at least two of the following online virus scans making sure to reboot in between each one. Allow them to fix anything they find. You need to use Internet Explorer or Netscape browsers.
Bitdefender
Panda ActiveScan << Click "Scan your PC" and scan "My Computer".
Trend Micro << Click Auto Clean
Symantec Security Check << click scan for viruses
RAV Online Virus Scanner << Enter your e-mail address and click on To continue without subscribing
McAfee
Write down anything that can not be fixed. Include the file name and the path to the file.

Scan with HijackThis and post the new log as a reply to this thread. Include anything that can not be fixed by the online scans.

HijackThis log appears clean.

The TrenMicro scan concerns me with the amount of Spyware that it found. I would like you to run Ad-Aware and Spybot to see if they can remove anything remaining.

Please download and install Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D according to the following instructions. If you already have these programs, please make sure they are the latest version (Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06, Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4), than run scans as described below.

Scanning With Spybot S&D:
  • Downloaded and Install Spybot S&D accepting the Default Settings.
  • In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see 'Mode'. Make certain that 'default mode' has a check mark beside it.
  • Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D.
  • Click the button to ‘Search for Updates’ then download and install the Updates.
  • Next click the button ‘Check for Problems’
  • When Spybot is complete, it will be showing ‘RED’ entries bold 'Black' entries and ‘GREEN’ entries in the window.
  • Make certain there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.
  • Choose ‘Fix Selected Problems’ and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.
  • REBOOT to complete the scan and clear memory.
  • Do not enable Tea Timer until the log is clean as it will prevent the fix from working.
Scanning With Ad-Aware SE:
  • Download and Install Ad-Aware SE, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan.
  • Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE.
  • Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.
  • Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window.
    • In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
      • Automatically save log-file
      • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
      • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
    • Under Definitions:
      • Prompt to udate outdated definitions - set the number of days
    • Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green :
      • Under Driver, Folders & Files:
        • Scan Within Archives
      • Under Select drives & folders to scan -
        • choose all hard drives
      • Under Memory & Registry: all green
      • Scan active processes
      • Scan registry
      • Deep-scan registry
      • Scan my IE favorites for banned URLs
      • Scan my Hosts file
    • Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:
      • Under Shell Integration:
        • Move deleted files to recycle bin
      • Under Logfile Detail Level: (all green)
        • include addtional object information
        • DESELECT - include negligible objects information
        • include environment information
      • Under Alternate Data Streams:
        • Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
        • Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT
    • Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:
      • Under the ‘Scanning Engine’:
        • Unload recognized processes during scanning
        • Scan registry for all users instead of current user only
      • Under the ‘Cleaning Engine’:
        • Always try to unload modules before deletion
        • During removal, unload Explorer and IE if necessary
        • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
      • Under the Log Files:
        • Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
        • Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
        • Create logfile for removal operations.
        • Please do not check or make green: Include Module list in logfile
  • Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.
  • Click ‘Start’
    • Choose:'Perform Full System Scan'
    • DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.
  • If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window, click "Next".
  • The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".
  • Save the logfile when asked.
  • REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found.
Scan with HijackThis and post one more log for me to look at.
Let me know how the computer is behaving now.
Hi Alan,

Ran the two programs with the settings you advised. Got rid of everything it detected, rebooted and ran those two programs again to make sure everything is clean.

This is the new logfile :)

HijackThis log still looks good.

MOST IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and IE to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is on the internet. Please go to Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates and click on Express Install to get the critical updates.
For Windows 2000, you should be up to SP4.
If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the cirtical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update

I suggest that you download these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
ie-spyad - Puts over 12,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read the following posts to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
Hi Alan, Thanks so much for your help! Windows and MS Office has been updated, installed Spyware Blaster, ie-spyad, Google Toolbar and enabled Tea Timer in Spyboy S&D. I have not downloaded Firefox nor ZoneAlarm, cos I am using my router's firewall now. Is that good enough? Will Firefox cause compatibility issues with my system? I have also made a small donation to the site as a form of appreciation for the help you have given me. It's greatly appreciated :) Zac

The router's firewall will do fine. I have not heard of any problems with Firefox on other people's computers. It does take a little getting used to though as it is quite different than Internet Explorer. I've been using it for 11 months now and love it. :)
I'll try it out this weekend, been really pooped out from doing all the updating and fixing :P but thanks once again for your help, I really appreciate it :) Zac
