Hello,

Have an unwanted Blue Search Bar and AdultFriendFinder popping up on various accounts on my computer. Searching on this seems to indicate that Hijack This is the tool to help. Here is my logfile. I would appreciate whatever help I can get. It's not clear to me which items are safe to remove.

Thanks in anticipation.

Cheers, jwg.

Hi,

Still having the problem with the blue search bar and Adult Friend Finder popping up. I have run Spybot (on all user IDs) and Adaware and MS Antispyware. They are all clean now. Have also run the only checker at spywareguide.com. Am on XP Home.

One message that appears to pop up is that MS Antispyware is not allowing c:\Program Files\support.com\client\lserver\server.vbs to run.

Here's the log:

Hello John and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Step 1
We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Click on Tools, Settings.
  • In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
  • Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
  • Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Step 2
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ArmyBalmBaseSafe] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Bike Rdr Army Balm\Delete wait.exe

Optional items to check with HijackThis for improved performance.
Resource hog that launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. Some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it isn't required either way.
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

ZTGServerswitch is part of Sony's Vaio support agent - designed by Support.com. Not required if the user does not wish to use the Vaio support agent and regarded as spyware
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ZTgServerSwitch] c:\program files\support.com\client\lserver\server.vbs

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 3
Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove the following items (if found):

Window Search
Window Searching
Lop.com
LOP SEARCH
Browser Enhancer
Ultimate Browser Enhancer

Step 4
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 5
Please delete the following folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Bike Rdr Army Balm

If you have any problem deleting these items, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 6
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Thanks a lot!! It appears to have worked fine. At least no sign of the blue bar or Adult Friend Finder popping up. I'll see what happens on the other accounts or if it comes back, but it appears to be licked. Thanks again.

One note on the instructions - its Options, Settings on Microsoft AntiSpyware, not Tools. I did have to go to Safe Mode to delete as it said some other program had the files in use. I assume because some other accounts automatically logon to MSN or something. None of those Add/Remove programs were found. Thanks for getting rid of the Vaio agent. Here's the current log:

That new log is clean.

I would like you to run one more scan to detect if it is present in any other accounts on your computer.

  • Double-click it to run it.
  • Read then accept the agreement.
  • Check Drive, and select all local drives, scan all files, then press 'scan'. (This may take a while and will not fix anything)
  • Once it finds something, it will prompt you so click OK.
  • When it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane.
  • Highlight it with the mouse, copy it (CTRL+C), and paste (CTRL+V) it in your next reply.
Note : It will find many orphaned registry entries so please do not be alarmed by the amount of items that show.

How many accounts are on your computer?

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • Click Options < Advanced and uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours".
  • Click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • After it has completed it's process, click Exit.
Caution : It is not recommended to use the 'Issues' tab as it is known to find legitimate items.

Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
In the field labeled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file paths listed below ONE AT A TIME (EXACTLY as it appears, please double check to make sure!):

C:\Documents and Settings\Bethany\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\MX454LQZ\exitpop[1].htm
C:\Documents and Settings\Bethany\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\663P1PXY\exitpop[1].htm
C:\Documents and Settings\Natalie\My Documents\My Received Files\dean-oparay.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Tabitha\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\CKWXXAPF\mm[1].js
C:\Documents and Settings\Hannah\Local Settings\Temp\vefnkhaa.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Hannah\Local Settings\Temp\yfecvzju.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Hannah\Local Settings\Temp\stmuabqr.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Hannah\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\C143O147\prompt[1].php
C:\Documents and Settings\Hannah\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\C143O147\JigsawGeddesGardenZoneInstall[1].exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Hannah\Application Data\Great Bone\ayiwvkvs.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Hannah\Application Data\Great Bone\Flag sign else that.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Hannah\Application Data\Great Bone\hope bait bleh.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Hannah\Application Data\Great Bone\Move test debug.exe

Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the NO button. Do this after each one until you have entered the LAST file path I have listed above. After that LAST file path has been entered, press the YES button at both prompts so that your computer restarts.
If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.

After the reboot, delete the following folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Hannah\Application Data\Great Bone

I would like to see a Hijackthis log from the user account Hannah to make sure nothing else is on there. That appears to be the only other account infected with LOP.
Here's the log from the user Hannah:

Forgot to say earlier, thank you for letting me know about the error in instructions for Microsoft Antispyware. It looks like they moved some menu items around with the latest edition. I've updated my notes so it won't happen again.

Step 1
We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Click on Options, Settings.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MessengerPlus3] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\MsgPlus.exe" /WinStart
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [FIVE THUNK] C:\DOCUME~1\Hannah\APPLIC~1\GREATB~1\Move test debug.exe

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 3
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving now. Check each account to see if anything is out of the ordinary and post a Hijackthis log for it. If everything is working fine, I'll give you some recommendations to help keep the computer clean.
Thanks a lot. Everything look fine and clean. Here's the latest log for my account.

Your new log appears clean. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
