I have my search engine being redirected to Gopher search off & on. Also I notice new "favorite folders" being applied to My Links for adult content & other misc items. I have run Spy sweep & Adaware twice & removed what it revealed with no luck.

Here is the HJT logs for both users. Your help is very much appreciated!

Hope to hear from you soon….. Thanks! :thumbup:
DracSteele,,

Sorry about the delay, if you have not resolved this issue and need further assistance, please move HJT to its own folder and post a new log. Please just post one log for the main user and be sure to reply to this thread using the same HJT program.

Instructions here……………

DO THIS FIRST
Your HIJACKTHIS program is current, but it is very important that it resides in its own folder.
We will use Hijackthis (HJT) to make changes to your system and HJT will make backups of those changes,
If HJT is not in its own folder, those backups could be lost.

Easy to fix,
* just go to MY COMPUTER > YOUR C:\ DRIVE and create a new folder and name it HIJACKTHIS .
* Now scroll to where you have HJT currently, right click on the HJT icon and select CUT .
* Now open the new folder you just created and right click within that folder and select PASTE .
* Now HJT should reside in C:\HIJACKTHIS\HIJACKTHIS.EXE

You can download the latest version of SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY 1.4, AND AD-AWARE SE PERSONAL 1.06 You can open each program and go to help/about and it will give you the version number, if they are not current, download and install the latest versions for both programs via the link in my signature.

So,
move HJT to its own folder
Download, install and run Spybot and Ad-Aware..

* Install Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4

* If you have the older version 1.3, remove it via ADD-REMOVE PROGRAMS.

Go to START/ CONTROL PANEL/ PERFORMANCE AND MAINTAINENCE/ ADD-REMOVE
PROGRAMS
scroll to that program and click on REMOVE.

* During Installation, just follow all the defaults.
* Go to MODE and click on ADVANCED MODE.
* Then to SETTINGS / IGNORE PRODUCTS and put a checkmark in DSO EXPLOITS.
* Then to SETTINGS / FILE SETS and take the checkmark out ofUSAGE TRACKS.
* Then to TOOLS/ HOSTS FILE and then on the top click on ADD SPYBOT S & D HOSTS FILES.
* Then to TOOLS/ IE TWEAKS and put a checkmark in LOCK THE HOSTS FILES
* Then check for UPDATES.
* Then to Immunize. then up at the top by the GREEN SIGN, click on IMMUNIZE.
* Then go to the top to SPYBOT and run a FULL SYSTEM SCAN.
* Then to FIX PROBLEMS and fix all it finds.

Then RE-BOOT your computer.

AD-AWARE SE PERSONAL 1.06

If you have an older version of AD-AWARE , it will be removed during the install of the new version.

* During installation, follow all the defaults.
* Start the program and CHECK FOR UPDATES
* Choose PERFORM FULL SYSTEM SCAN
* Take the checkmark out of SEARCH FOR NEGLIGIBLE RISK FILES
* Run the scan
* When it is done, RIGHT CLICK ON ONE OF THE ENTRIES/ SELECT ALL/ NEXT and let it remove all that if finds.

Now run HJT and post a new log please.
Thanks for your help Ken. Followed your instructions. Here is the new HJT log.

Hello again DracSteele,

Lets do this. you may want to print out these fixes and you will have to go offline to fix some of them.

I would like you to enable windows to show all files and folders and to boot into Safemode. Instructions here…..

SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS

* Click on MY COMPUTER
* Then on your C: Drive
* Then to TOOLS/ FOLDER OPTIONS/ VIEW
* Choose the radio button to SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS
* Take the checkmark out of HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES
* Then APPLY/ OK

* Don't forget to reverse this once your computer is clean

To Enter SAFEMODE

* Go to START/ SHUT OF YOUR COMPUTER/ RESTART
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu.
* Use the UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the ENTER KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD

Delete this file in bold

C:\WINDOWS\system32\gpstool.dll <– This File

Now run Hijackthis Scan Only, put a checkmark in the following entries, close all windows except HJT and click on FIX CHECKED.

* R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://g.msn.com/0SEENUS/SAOS10
* R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.gophersearch.com/
* O2 - BHO: ohb - {22DFEAE8-9AD2-4FC6-9CBA-A6566CA3B6EB} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gpstool.dll (file missing)

While in safemode, lets clean out all your temp files . Do this for all users of your computer. Yep, Brendas too :D

This process will clean out your TEMP FILES and your TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES. Please do both steps:

Step 1 - DELETE TEMP FILES

* This procedure should be run from SAFEMODE for better results.

* click on START/ RUN and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. You should do this for each user on your system. Please delete all
files that are found there. If you get an error when deleting a file, skip that file and delete all the others.

* Do this same process for %windir%\temp.

NOW RE-BOOT NORMALLY

Step 2 - DELETE TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES

* Now I want you to open up INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB, (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now download and run CCleaner This is a safe program that will clean all the leftover crappola off your machine. I have to warn you that it will also delete all cookies, so when you start the program, go to options/cookies and all your cookies will load in the left window, just move the ones you want to keep to the right window
http://www.ccleaner.com/.

Empty your recycle bin.

Jus as a precaution, lets download and install and run Trojan Hunter , this is the 30 day evaluatilon version. Let it scan and remove anything it finds. Let me know if there is anything it could not get rid of.
http://www.trojanhunter.com/

Lastly, lets run a free online virus scanner from Trendmicro…Have it set to Auto-Clean.
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

When your done, post a new HJT log please.
Hi Ken,

Have followed your instructions & found a few things.

1) WHen in Safe Mode I found there was a 3rd user on my pc I didn't know about. It was named Administrator. Should that be there if I did not create it?

2)When looking for the file gpstool.dll to delete it was not found.

3)Trojan hunter could not remove the folowing:

Unable to clean trojan file C:\Documents and Settings\Tim\My Documents\My Received Files\Mechwarrior Files\mech4-trn.zip/mercstrainer.exe/EQo31KO.exe because it is contained in an archive
Unable to clean trojan file C:\Documents and Settings\Tim\My Documents\My Received Files\Mechwarrior Files\mw4merctrn.zip/mwdmercs_sc.exe/q1ksVU5.exe because it is contained in an archive
Unable to clean trojan file C:\Documents and Settings\Tim\My Documents\My Received Files\Mechwarrior Files\Xmercs.zip/Xmercs.exe/GLFuH.exe because it is contained in an archive
Trojan cleaning finished.

Also here is the HJT log after the scans.

1) WHen in Safe Mode I found there was a 3rd user on my pc I didn't know about. It was named Administrator. Should that be there if I did not create it?

This is the default settings for XP, not to worry.

2)When looking for the file gpstool.dll to delete it was not found.

Don't worry about this one either, it most likely went south with one of the scans.

As far as this goes Mechwarrior This looks to be some sort of game you may have downloaded. If you did download it and don't want it, you may find it to remove in the ADD-REMOVE PROGRAMS in the control panel. If you don't know what it is, scroll to that folder…C:\Documents and Settings\Tim\My Documents\My Received Files and delete it. You may have to do this in Safemode. Don't delete it from the recycle bin for a few days in case you need it back.

Your log is looking a lot better, there is one line that I am unsure of so I am going to do some research and be back to you later on today.

How is your system running now since we made those changes??
Thanks for your help Ken. The sysytem seems to be very stable & much more responsive to page loads now. Yes I do quite a bit of gaming online & MECHWARRIOR is one of them, but I do not believe deleteing those files will hurt. They will be history. As far as the line deletion that you request me to do, I paly a game called Guild wars online that updates everytime I log on. Would that line have anything to do with that game maybe? Again thanks so much for the help :thumbup: Talk again soon Tim
Tim,

Your log looks great :D I am so glad that your system is running better.

Here are a few tips to help maintain and keep your system protected from all the garbage going around.

you have done this step already but do it every now and then, although CCleaner will do it for you

Now that your clean, we need to erase all possible older infected files that may still be lurking on your system.
clean out your TEMP FILES

* This procedure should be run from SAFEMODE for better results.
