Hello Ryan, You seem to have fiqured out how it works here. We have many, many posts and a bunch of volunteers trying to maintain real lives with jobs and families and still find time to help. When we look, we look for posts with 0 responses. When you add or bump the number goes up and we figure someone is helping you. Time is very valuable. Now I can say I see some adware that should be removed and some optional items I will ask you to consider later but if you still need help, let's let's do a good cleaning, run a few good scans looking for hiding trojans, etc. remove the adware and see how you are running. Let's proceed like this:

1) Optional: C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe Installed by aol, probably without your knowledge. If you do not use it, I would like to remove it, let me know. Here is some information:
http://www.greatis.com/appdata/u/v/viewmgr.exe.htm
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/V…r.exe-6093.html

2) Optional: C:\PROGRA~1\AWS\WEATHE~1\Weather.EXE Waste of resources, if you must use it make sure it is version 6.0 or higher as earlier versions were adware related.

3) Is it possible this issue could have occured at the time of the SP2 download? If so, view this information:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx Has any other new software been added around this time?

4) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Take the time to review the instructions on the download page so that when I ask you to run it you will know what you are doing.

5) I see Spybot, do you run Ad-aware and are they both updated to the newest versions? Spybot is 1.04 and Ad-aware is 1.06. Use the most recent versions of Ad-aware and Spybot as they can get to places HJT cannot. Please use this link: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php to download, update, configure and run these two "big guns" and allow them to remove anything bad they locate. Both programs provide backups for your safety. ***note: please do not activate Spybot TeaTimer until your computer is clean. Run Spybot first and reboot between the scans. Run the "Full System Scan".

6) Ewido trojan scanner: http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Please download, install, update and scan your system with the free version of Ewido trojan scanner:
  1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  2. When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  3. From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"), click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so time to go get a drink and a snack….
  5. If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  6. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Please then paste the contents of the text file to this thread.

  7. 7) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(next is optional aol searchbar. If you do not use it, check it)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Run CCleaner then restart the computer and post a new HJT log along with the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let us know how you are running.

Thanks so much for your help.

CCleaner was downloaded but installation of it did not work (the window would just disappear and wouldn't install).

A few other things…

1) I like WeatherBug and want to keep it.
2) I don't use AOL Manager or whatever it is.
3)Whenever I boot up my computer, a window ALWAYS pops up asking for me to verify my subcription to McAfee.. I would like to get rid of this reminder, because my subscription is over and the pop up is annoying.
4)Whenever I shut down my computer, two pop ups always appear asking to either "end now" or "cancel" ACCAgnt.exe and then DSAgnt.exe.

Thanks!!!
OK Ryan, Let's look at the items you mention at the end of the post first.

1) I like WeatherBug and want to keep it.

If you wish to retain Weatherbug, simply make sure it is version 6.0 or higher. AWS removed adware from that version because the software was recognized as being responsible for adware. Prior to this, we removed it without asking.

2) I don't use AOL Manager or whatever it is.

Good decision, I will remove it with HJT next.

3) Whenever I boot up my computer, a window ALWAYS pops up asking for me to verify my subcription to McAfee.. I would like to get rid of this reminder, because my subscription is over and the pop up is annoying.

McAfee is the purveyor of your antivirus software. I have no way of knowing which part of their software is responsible for the subscription reminder. This is something you will need to discuss with McAfee.

4) Whenever I shut down my computer, two pop ups always appear asking to either "end now" or "cancel" ACCAgnt.exe and then DSAgnt.exe.

ACCAgnt.exe see this >>> http://castlecops.com/s7819-ACCAgnt_exe.html
this is the item in the log: C:\Program Files\AOL Computer Check-Up\ACCAgnt.exe
DSAgnt.exe see this >>> http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/dsagnt/
This is the item in the log: C:\Program Files\Dell Support\DSAgnt.exe

I suggest you discuss the first with aol, and the second with Dell support. If you can get them to tell you what to remove, I may be able to show you how to do it, but they should be able to do that also.
You may also me able to turn those items off in the System Configuration Utility (msconfig) > http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/ but i can not give you that advice and suggest you get it from Dell and aol.

CCleaner was downloaded but installation of it did not work (the window would just disappear and wouldn't install).

You must be doing something wrong, I have asked folks to install it hundreds of times and you are the first who had an issue with it. If you want to try again, go ahead. If you want to try another utility to clean out Prefetch, temp and temp internet files, here are two others you can try:

http://www.stevengould.org/software/cleanup/
http://www.igorshpak.net/

While it will not do as good a job, you can also use cleanmgr. Click on Start, then Run. In then Open box type "cleanmgr" without the quotes and then OK. Allow it to run until complete then remove anything windows suggests.

Ewido scan: You have a lot of Spyware Tracking cookies, they should have been removed by Spybot and Ad-aware if you ran those programs as suggested before Ewido. Look at where those cookies are, this is the reason for the CCleaner, it will remove these. The others may. You should remove those cookies on a regular basis.
As you can see Ewido removed an instance of spyware that involved AWS, this may have been left from old Weatherbug software? The same with Webhanser. You had two items in System Restore. I will give you instruction to turn SR off, reboot and then turn it back on. This will give you a clean restore point and all clean System Restore files.

HJT Log:

Start > Control Panel > Add Remove programs. Locate and highlite
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe then click on Uninstall and OK.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\ >>> folder

Empty the recycle bin and restart the computer. Your log is clean of malware, Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

Here are instructions for setting a clean restore point in System Restore:

I will keep the thread open for a few days in the event McAfee, aol or Dell wants you to use HJT to remove anything that is creating an issue.
