Please help! I know as much as I needed a Hijack This log but not what to do with it! My computer is generally running VERY slow, it keeps kicking me off the internet (although I don't know if that's due to my DSL connection) and I can't even download free Anti-Virus software because they always contain errors!

Here's my log:

Thanks for your help, I will try to wait patiently for my turn in the queue! :)
Hello Superbabe :)

Please Copy and Paste this post into a new text document or print it for reference

Step 1.

You are running "HijackThis" from an unsafe location.

To enable any backup we make to be stored safely please Download a copy of HJTsetup.exe from:
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe

Double click HJTsetup.exe to begin installation.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box uncheck the box to the left of Launch Hijackthis and then click Finish
Do this BEFORE you proceed!

Step 2.

Download 'SpSeHjfix'. to the desktop and then
right click a blank part of desktop & select new folder, call it spfix
unzip the file into that folder

Close ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.
and then Run 'SpSeHjfix'. and click on "Start Disinfection".
When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process.
The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder.

If it doesn't find any of the SE files or any hidden reinstallers it will say system clean and not go on to next stage

Now Download Ewido Anti-Spyware
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

The program should launch automatically after installation. If not, double-click the desktop icon.

Deactivate the "Ewido Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

Ewido automatically updates the spyware definitions if you are connected to the net during installation.
As a precaution, click the "Update" icon from the main menu.
Then click the "Start Update" button.
When you receive the "Update successful" prompt, close Ewido.
Note: If you have any problems with the updater, you can Update Ewido Manually.
Do not Scan with this yet!

Reboot into Safe Mode.
Shut down your system, then Restart your computer as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8 from the menu select the option to enter Safe Mode.

Reopen Ewido Anti-Spyware and click the "Scanner" icon from the main menu.
Click "Complete System Scan" to start scanning.
When the scan completes, click "Recommended action" beneath the results window and select "Quarantine".
Then click the "Apply all actions" button to quarantine everything detected.
Then click Save report > Save report as and save the Report-Scan.txt to your desktop.
Then Reboot back into Normal Mode

Step 3.

Please Open Hijackthis
Click Open Misc Tools | Open Unistall Manager.
A list of the entries in Add/remove programs will appear.
Click on Save List…
The list will be saved as Uninstall_list.txt

Please Re-scan with HijackThis and post:

1/ The new HJT log.
2/ The SpSeHjfix log.
3/ The Ewido scan result's.
4/ The Uninstall_list.txt

Thank you,
ourwilly. :)
Hi, I’ve got as far as trying to download Ewido but after a few attempts at either saving or opening the file, I get an error message saying it isn’t compatible with win 32? I’m also having trouble staying connected to the internet, my dsl modem is extremely haphazard and I wondered if this is connected to my computer problems or is it something else? I will keep trying to download Ewido but in the meantime I would appreciate any further advice you could give me. Thanks!
Yippee! I've managed to download the programs at last! Here's the logs/ reports (I think I went overboard with the SpSeHjfix log coz it didn't seem to do anything - but it obviously did, 3 times!):

Hello Superbabe,

ourwilly has been called into work so I'll see if I can help

You need to update both Windows XP and Internet Explorere as they are both well behind in updates. They are both missing Service Pack 1 which is leaving you open to all kinds of problems.

Service Pack 1 for XP

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa…p1/default.mspx

Service Pack 1 for Internet Explorer.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downlo…p1/default.mspx

Install then Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Hi LDTate,

Thanks for your help. Here's the latest log:

Thankyou!
I'm having problems with a lot of things, I keep getting kicked off the internet and it takes me a few tries to actually download the programs Ourwilly advised. The XP pack seemed to download ok, but I noticed the page for downloading IE said that the update was included in the XP pack - but I downloaded it anyway, tried to open the folder but nothing happened, so I clicked the setup icon on my desktop and it said a newer version of IE was already on my system and wouldn't go any further. I will try the whole thing again over the weekend - but my computer is SO slow, and as I said, I could be halfway through a download (or even writing this message) and my interenet connection will go. I'm on AOL at the moment with a DSL modem which is very temperamental at the moment! I actually wondered if it was something to do with my phone line coz we had a power cut a few weeks ago, our telephones wouldn't work for a week although BT said there was no problem on the line. But during that period the internet connection still worked - it was only really when the phones were fixed that I started having trouble with my modem. I'm switching my line rental to Talk Talk and in October when my AOL contract expires I'm switching to Talk Talk's broadband service also. So I'm hoping that will sort out the connection part! Having said that, the phone point used for the modem line has got an extension to our SKY box, which I've actually disconnected occasionally so it's not 'sharing' the phone line. I can't do this permanently coz SKY need to keep dialling into my digibox but I wondered if this was anything to do with it! Obviously you're not a telephone engineer but have you ever heard of anything similar affecting a modem? Sorry to go on but it's really doing my head in!

Obviously you're not a telephone engineer but have you ever heard of anything similar affecting a modem?

There are all kinds of things that can effect modems.

Try this:

lets see if this will help speed it up.

Backup your Registry…
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run…)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

NOTE: To be extra safe you can choose to only remove the items in RED.
Oh dear! I tried opening it and saving it but it just said the compressed file was invalid or corrupted! Might try again another day!
