Windows XP cannot open normally- now what

I have windows Xp on my laptop. It is wireless DSL. Use IE and Outlook express. also AVG with all my updates on them. On 6-7-05 ran Spybot S&D Life interferred and I didn't recheck things that have recurred. This evening the computer shut down while playing a CD of photos. It will not reopen normally. I don't know which option to choose- Safe mode? what to do next? Spybot found CoolWWWsearch, DyFuCa, Shopathome, hitbox, webTrends live. Thank you. All our pictures are on it…

Can you provide more information? When you say it shut down, did it preceed that with any error message? Did it "blue screen" or seem to power off?

Also, when you say it won't reopen normally, what do you mean? What does it do when you attempt to boot it?
