Hello, I hope someone can help. Sorry for the long explanation.

I have been having problems for about a week now, and I can't figure it out myself so here goes. Started off my computer was just unusually slow. Then I got warnings that my AV had expired for about 3 days then it stopped. About the same time the AV warnings stopped my startup screen went to a black screen with the choices -start Windows XP Home and -Restore Windows XP Home. Then I noticed my CPU and memory totally maxing out in the performance tab of task manager. Then my computer starts freezing for a few seconds at a time. Then Internet Explorer, everytime I started it would have an error and needed to shut down. At that time I looked in task manager and I had 5 instances of iexplore.exe running. Now my computer just totally stops and I have to cold reboot can't even open taskmanager, and my desktop intermittently flickers (icons disappear and then reappear). Its also hard to get the screen saver to go off.

I also got a weird message when I double clicked on Spybot (it hadn't even opened yet), from MS Antispyware Beta that said "Allowed the shell open command for ftp files to be invoked by the program Microsoft Internet Explorer New Program: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe Previous: None". I don't know what that was about but the computer froze at that point.

I have already used Spybot, Adaware, Pest Patrol, a-squared,The Cleaner 1.4, a2hijackfree, cwshredder, M.S. Antispyware, Ewido Security, E-Trust AV, and Trendmicros housecall. With the exception of tracking cookies from Spybot everything else says no infections.

I don't know what else to do. Thanks

Hello kessiah, welcome to the TC.

I don't see anything bad in your log. You issues could be hardware related. We can try this if you like.

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen.
Hello and ty for responding, but need alittle more help. I did as u suggested, but funny things happened afterward. I downloaded and installed regseek. I ran the clean registry, selected all and deleted. Then made sure to emty trash bin and rebooted. Computer lagged at reboot, and then I got messages from Microsofts Antispyware about two programs trying to access internet etc. I had allowed the access thinking they were something different. The programs were Ibserver.exe and Ibguard.exe. When my computer froze again I checked taskmanager and those 2 programs were hogging resources. I ended them and did a google search, found out they were for Mozilla Firefox. Which I had but uninstalled. But during the google search another web page poped up, and started a download for Windows Journal Viewer. It wouldn't let me cancel the download. Everytime I tried another prompt would pop up until I had to cold reboot. I don't know what that was all about. But I did go into msconfig and disable the ibserver and ibguard services and that download prompt hasn't come back. But the calculator that is in the accessories folder is completely gone. Everything else seems to be ok except the calculator. Any suggestions? Thank you.
Hi again LD. And thanks so much for being patient with me and for your help. Ok so I searched the hard drive for calc.exe. It came back no results found. Huh, kinda weird. It was there after I did the regseeker, I do use it often. Is this something I should concerned about? And how would I go about reinstalling it?
Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Calc.exe should be in a Hidden folder called c\windows\system32\dllcache.
You should be able to Right Click on it and select Send To Desktop, Create Short Cut.

This is where it goes if you want it back in the Accessories list.
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories

Right Click on the shortcut that's on the desktop and select copy, then go to
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories and Right Click, select Paste.

Click Start> My Computer, select the Tools menu and then Folder Options, after the new window appears select the View tab…]
This time select the: Restore Defaults
Select: Apply, and click OK
Nope its gone. I looked throught the C:\Windows\system32\dllcache after setting to view hidden files. I ran another search just in case and I still cant locate it on my hard drive anywhere.
Well I figured out how to fix it. I guess some of the windows components got uninstalled. I went into the add/remove and into windows components and saw that the accessories had been unchecked. So I checked it and added the accessories back and now its back. I didn't even realize anything else was gone. But I am still wondering how it got removed in the first place. I am the only one with access to this computer. Well thank you for your help. I hope I have no other problems.
Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
Great job

You're more then welcome.
Glad we were able to help

Peace be with you :wavey:
