Spyware / Malware / Virus Removal

How bad can it get?!

7 min read

This thread's last reply is from . Advice, software, and links below may be out of date — treat specific steps and download links with caution.

I've been delegated the task of trying to get my parents' PC back up and running following what seems to be a torrent of malware and trojans that they've picked up somewhere along the line.

The system is running quite slowly, and on right clicking anything the dial-up connection window appears. I've run Adaware a few times, and despite seeming to come up with CWS, VX2 and another trojan, it seems unable to get rid of the problem.

Installed (and run programs) are:

AdAware SE (latest update)
Spybot (again, latest def's as far as possible)
CWShredder (came up with nothing!)
Norton AV 2003 (Defs up to date but virtually useless)

I haven't run the PC through any online checks as the olds have dial-up and I'm on cable (without router alas!).

I've included the HJT log below and on looking through this, I've spotted what I think are quite a few suspect entries, but I could do with a pro's opinion before I try anything further!

Help!

Thanks in advance

Buggyman

Finally managed to get online with the aid of a bargain basement router!

I've managed to do an online scan with eTrust and Panda as well as updated Ad-Aware and Spybot.

The good news is, Ad-Aware is no longer showing up 124 critical objects, but has managed to come down to 24. Only thing is, every time I try to get rid of these they come straight back.

I've noticed that not only does my homepage come up as the dreaded About:Blank, but there's also a number of items which have been added to the Favourites list.

This includes:

Roughly 20 different links to various go2-search.com sites
lookfor.cc
7days.ws

Most of the links are of a dodgy nature!

I've tried a few more different combinations of scans and cleans using Ad-Aware, Spybot, online scans, CWShredder and About:Buster - all to no avail. Same problem just keeps coming back!

Please find below an up to date HJT log - HELP!!. This thing is driving me nuts!!!!!

Hi toscane

Thanks for the reply. I followed your suggestions and have come up with the following log file.

I seem to be having a bit of a problem with the program msgb.exe as well. I've googled it numerous times and so far have drawn a complete blank about what it is or what it does. However, I noticed that if I leave it running it throws up small message boxes with 'Info' in the title bar, a random number then an OK button. If you click on this it throws up another box. This happens about 7 or 8 times before it eventually opens a help file apparently on how to get rid of spyware. I've set my firewall to block all traffic at the moment so it doesn't show anything in the help file apart from 'Page is unavailable'. Could this be linked to the malware issues?

Anyway, here's my new logfile:

Well, I wandered myself. Thought that perhaps a mathematicprogram was connected to it.
As the tasklist search gave also a blanc answer and you don't know the file we can get rid of it.

Go into safe mode again.

Fix those entrys with HijackThis
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSBG.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSBG.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [ADDCB.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ADDCB.EXE /s

Open Killbox.exe and put the following files in the window to delete on reboot:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSBG.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ADDCB.EXE /s

To clean out your temp files, click on Start and then run, and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. Please delete all files that are found there. If you get an error when deleting a file, skip that file and delete all the others.
Do this same process for %windir%\temp.
Reboot into normal mode.

Step 2: Delete Temporary Internet Files
Now I want you to open up Internet Explorer, and click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. At the General tab, which should be the first tab you are currently on, click on the Delete Files button and put a checkmark in Delete offline content. Then press the OK button. This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes. When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Run HijackThis, post a new log and tell me how the system is running.
Hi toscane

I've dumped all the temp files with no problem removing any of them. So far IE is behaving normally. The homepage is staying at google and no suspect entries have appeared in the favourites folders!

The strange 'info' messages have also vanished and 'msgb.exe' is not appearing anywhere in the list of tasks running.

:weee:

The two files I had to restore (sdhelper and control.exe) are both coming up safe and well when I search for them as well. The system seems to be running as per normal and at a good speed for the processor it's got.

I've done a fresh HJT scan and the log is below. Looking over it I can't see anything that seems linked to the items already removed - so far so good!

Let me know what you think:

That log looks fine to me

Now that it is clean we have to make a clear restorepoint.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Right-click My Computer and then click Properties.
2. On the Performance tab, click File System
3. On the Troubleshooting tab, click to select Disable System Restore
4. Click OK twice
5. Restart your computer.

6. Right-click My Computer and again click Properties
7. On the Performance tab, click File System
8. Clear the check mark in Disable System Restore check box.
9. System Restore is now be active again.
I've cleared out the system restore points as you suggested and have also installed SpywareBlaster to try and stop any future problems as well. A couple of online scans found a few more remnants of malware but these have now been cleared off the system. Looks like everything is now working as it should be and hopefully, all going well, will remain that way for a good while! Many thanks for helping me out with this one. I've just started working on practice logs so am not yet that confident about how to go about dealing with problems like this one - hopefully one of these days I'll be able to handle it on my own! Until then, thanks again toscane B) Buggyman
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.

And lots of succes in the classroom
