The best tool for scanning the system for malware is mwavscan.
It won't fix anything (unless you buy it) but give us a report.
If you want, run it.


Click here http://www.mwti.net/download/tools/mwav.exe to download mwavscan.
Double-click it to run it, select all local drives, scan all files, press 'scan' and when it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane.
Highlight it, CTRL C and paste it in your next reply.
It's going to take a while to scan and if you get a pop-up to buy the program, just X it out.

This first group (I didn't post them all) are invalid registry entries and harmless.
You can try a registry cleanup, here's what I suggest:
I use RegCleaner, link below
http://www.worldstart.com/weekly-download/…-cleaner4.3.htm

Download and install it.
Click on the RegCleanr.exe
Tools (at the top) > Registry Cleanup > Do Them All
Then 'Select' (at top left) > choose ALL
'Remove Selected" (at bottom right)
A backup of all that was removed will be made, just choose 'Backups' (top right) to view them, you can delete them when you're confident they're no longer needed.

These are all the bad files found. (there may be some duplicates in there)
The best way to delete them all is by using the KillBox.
Download and unzip the KillBox to a folder.

Make sure the Standard file kill is checked.

I'm not sure how may files the KillBox can handle at one time, but I would highlight (select) about twenty of them, right click on them and choose copy.


Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard". All the files will be entered in the KillBox now
Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button, repeat until you have deleted all the files.

Now repeat the process for the next group, etc.

Dear MrC,

Thank you for your help getting my computer up and running again. It is very much appreciated.

As far as I can tell it is now behaving normally with only two minor anomalies :-

1) Spybot does not complete properly. It keeps generating a warning message. Perhaps I will try installing version 1.4 and see if that cures it.

2) C:\WINDOWS & C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM have about 15,000 small files created while I was suffering from this problem although none of the scan programs that I have run seem to say that they contain anything nasty.

Although it would be nice to sort these two items out I can happily live with them.

All of my programs now run normally from startup. With the exception of McAfee, which object to HJT running, I have generated my last HLT log. Is it possible for you to have one final look to give it, hopefully, a clean bill of health and ensure that nothing untoward is still lurking in the depths of my computer.
