Hello, my home page is now setting itself to about:blank (was google). I use windows 2000. I downloaded Spybot Search & Destroy 1.3 and ran it. It only listed two problems 1) CoolWWWSearch.Aff.Winshow, and 2) Startpage - EH. I looked up the first problem here on these boards and someone said to download Hijackthis and post a log here. So here is my log and if anyone finds anything wrong I'd love to get your help. Thanks in advance!

Hello aledragon , welcome to the forum.

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
  • Prepare CWShredder for use:
    • Download CWShredder.
    • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Prepare AboutBuster for use:
    • Download AboutBuster.
    • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
    • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
    • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
    • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
    • You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.
  • Run CWShredder:
    • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
    • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
    • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
    • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
  • Run AboutBuster and save the logs:
    • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click "OK" at the directions Read: Important! prompt.
    • Click "Start" and then "OK" to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
    • Click "Yes" at the About:Buster prompt to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
    • Please wait while AboutBuster scans your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
    • When it has finished, click "Save Log…". Make sure you save it as I will need a copy of it.
    • Click "Exit" and "Exit" again to exit AboutBuster.
  • Clean out temporary files:
    • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
    • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
    • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
    • Click "OK" to remove them.
    • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
  • Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.
  • Free TrendMicro Housecall scan:
    • Vist the TrendMicro Housecall website.
    • Select your country from the drop-down list and click "Go".
    • Choose "Yes" at the ActiveX Security Warning prompt.
    • Please wait while the Housecall engine is updated.
    • Select the drives to be scanned by placing a check in their respective boxes.
    • Check the "Auto Clean" box.
    • Click "SCAN" in order to begin scanning your system.
    • Please be patient while Housecall scans your system for malicious files.
    • If not auto-cleaned, remove anything it finds.
    • Click "Close" to exit the Housecall scanner.
    • Choose "Yes" at the HouseCall message prompt.
  • Prepare your reply:
    • Please post a fresh HijackThis log
    • Please post the AboutBuster log.
    • Please note any complications you had.
Hello,
Ok I followed your directions. When I ran AboutBuster it asked me if I wanted to update, I clicked yes (since you had me do that for the CWShredder also) and it gave me a "critical error: an error has occured while updating", so I just ran it without updating.
Here are my new Hijackthis and AboutBuster logs as requested.
Thank you again for your help. Please let me know if I need to do anything further!

I suggest you do this:

Use Add/Remove Programs and remove:
Spyware Vanisher

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these.

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Spyware Vanisher] c:\spywarevanisher-free\FreeScanner.exe -FastScan

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/267803c5d9728f…ip/RdxIE601.cab

O20 - Winlogon Notify: ATINotify - logonnfy.dll (file missing)

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Restart your computer in Safe Mode

Press the F8 key, when you see the Starting Windows bar at the bottom of the screen.

Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

To configure Windows to show all files

Do one of the following:
In Windows 98/Me/2000, on the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.

In Windows Me/2000/XP, on the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
Do one of the following:

In Windows Me/2000/XP, uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, click Show hidden files and folders.
If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

Search for and delete these files if listed:
c:\spywarevanisher-free\FreeScanner.exe

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY Listed Profile USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Hello again, I did add/remove programs and didn't see SpywareVanisher listed, so I couldn't remove it. Going to My Computer, right clicking on DSK1 VOL1 (c:) and going to "Search", I got to the search page and under "Search Files or Folders" I put in Spy, Spyware, and SpywareVanisher respectively and never found anything listed as SpywareVanisher. I didn't see a Windows Temp folder, just a WUTemp folder and WINNT folder with a Temp in it. Neither had anything in it. Was a little confused by the Documents and Settings instructions so this is what I did. Under Documents and Settings > Default User > Local Settings > Temp I followed your directions to delete. It was empty anyway. Also Documents and Settings > RD > Local Settings > Temp I did the same thing, nothing there but followed directions anyway just in case. Those were the only temps I found under Documents and Settings. Sorry for the confusion on my part. Did everything else you listed as described and rebooted. Here is a new log from HijackThis after reboot. Thanks again, I really appreciate all the help! Good Job

Log looks good :D  How is it running any issues?

Do one of the following:
In Windows 98/Me/2000, on the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.

In Windows Me/2000/XP, on the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, check Hide file extensions for known file types.
Do one of the following:

In Windows Me/2000/XP, check Hide protected operating system files. Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, uncheck Show hidden files and folders.

Click Apply.
Click OK.

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
Been holding my breath but it's doing great. No pop ups, home page is staying what I set it to, and the favorites it added are not coming back now that they've been deleted. Thanks a million!!! Also I have Zone Alarm and Norton AV already. I will download the 3 programs you mentioned. Thanks again for all the help!
