Hello there,

Been having a problem with a trojan horse(s) I can't seem to get rid of. NAV used to popup on startup saying it detected what it calls Trojan.Qhosts in my hosts file. It couldn't fix it so it quarantined it. This happened every time I start the computer. Now it still pops up like it detected something, but the popup window is totally blank. Sometimes it pops up saying it detected the same thing, but deletes it now instead of quarantining it. I also once got what it just calls "Trojan Horse" in an "arun.exe" file, which it quarantined.

I followed all the directions posted here:
http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic17297.html

which included running CWShredder, AdAware, Spybot S&D, and HJT. When I ran CWShredder the first time it said I had VX2.Look2Me but unfortunately I had clicked "Scan only" and not "Fix" so it didn't do anything. All subsequent times I ran it, it doesn't detect anything. Also the VX2 Cleaner plugin on AdAware doesn't detect anything.

Anyway, computer seems to be running faster but maybe it's my imagination since I'm still getting the NAV blank popup when I start the machine. I'm thinking something might still be in there, or maybe NAV is just screwed up, that's why I've come to you with my HJT log. Hope you can let me know what you think might be going on.

Thanks for your help. Log pasted below.

BTW, I've switched to Firefox from IE since this log.

Hello hosehead, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. I can see a couple of worms and would like to help you cut off their ugly little heads. First view the links because these worms often make changes that you may need to reverse. Some will shut off or modify your firewall and av programs and the information Symantec provided will tell you if you need to reinstall anything. These worms do not show in running processes so they are probably running from your Prefetch folder and we will have to empty that to kill them. Please follow these directions in the posted order.

1) Review this information:
http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/trojdedlerd.html
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data….allocup.a.html

2) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Take the time to review the instructions on the download page so that when I ask you to run it you will know what you are doing.

3) Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta will stop of fix, you will need to turn it off until you run HijackThis.
Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck: Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck: Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WIN95DEFVIEW] C:\WINNT\system32\csmrs.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [.msfupdate] C:\WINNT\System\msveup.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

SHOW HIDDEN FILES: Follow the instructions in the link to enable hidden files for your operating system.
You may wish to reverse this process if you have any concern about anyone getting into these hidden system files.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINNT\system32\csmrs.exe >>> file

C:\WINNT\System\msveup.exe >>> file

Locate C:\Windows\Prefetch folder and open it. Delete the contents of the folder (NOT THE FOLDER) if there are many choose Edit then Select All then Delete. You may not be able to remove them all, don't be concerned unless any have the name of the items we need to remove. HJT has stopped the bad ones from running so we can remove them. Here is some information about the Prefetch for you:
http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-6270-5165773.html
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1683520,00.asp

Let's check for trojans in case any are hiding, run this free online scan, scan the whole system and set it to clean or fix anything it locates. Let me know what it finds and the exact name and location of anything it locates but can't remove. You may be asked to install an ActiveX, please do so as this program is safe and it can not run without it.
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

Run CCleaner then restart the computer and post a new log in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let us know how you are running.

Thanks…pskelley

PURGE SYSTEM RESTORE
When you are completely finished with the removal procedure and are satisfied that the threat has been removed follow these instruction:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…src=sec_doc_nam
Hi pskelley,

Thanks very much for your help. I followed all the instructions and so far so good, I haven't got the recurring NAV message on startup anymore, and my Windows Update is no longer resetting itself to turn off automatic updates. Who knows what else is fixed too.

Some replys to your message.

First is that in your first link you refer me to a website about the dedler worm. The removal procedure for this is much more complex than what you told me to do. Not that I'm complaining, I'm just wondering if the combination of CCleaner and HJT fixes accomplished the same thing?

Second, I wasn't sure which things to do in normal mode and which in safe mode. So I did everything in normal mode except for running HJT at the very end. Like I said, seems to be working fine….just hope that was OK.

Third, here's the results from the online scan from windowssecurity.com - it seems like it didn't detect anything other than a few cookies:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\owner@advertising[1].txt Trace.TrackingCookie
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\owner@admt[2].txt Trace.TrackingCookie
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\owner@doubleclick[1].txt Trace.TrackingCookie
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\owner@mediaplex[1].txt Trace.TrackingCookie
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\owner@realmedia[1].txt Trace.TrackingCookie
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\[removed][2].txt Trace.TrackingCookie
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\owner@statcounter[2].txt Trace.TrackingCookie

Fourth, and last, my final HJT log is below. And just want to thank you again. If something else comes up should I reply to this thread again or start a new one?

Thanks very much for your help. I followed all the instructions and so far so good, I haven't got the recurring NAV message on startup anymore, and my Windows Update is no longer resetting itself to turn off automatic updates. Who knows what else is fixed too.

Great job following the instruction  a clean HijackThis log is your reward. :D

First is that in your first link you refer me to a website about the dedler worm.

I am sorry you were confused by those links, I should expound more on the reason for posting them. Understand that different infections cause different things to happen on your computer. Some infections actually corrupt your antivirus programs, firewall, etc. I post that information for a couple of reasons. So you can read about the worm to learn more to help prevent it from infecting you again and so you can learn of any changes that it made in your security software or computer. In some cases the effected software must be uninstalled and reinstalled to fix the corruption. I hope this helps and if you have more questions about this, let me know.

Third, here's the results from the online scan from windowssecurity.com - it seems like it didn't detect anything other than a few cookies:

Yep all cookies, I am surprised CCleaner did not remove them, but then they could have accumulated since you ran the cleaner as cookies accumulate fast. Do a Google search for "cookies" without the quotes and you will find information about how to control them. I allow only very important cookies like for passwords and banking and deny all others. Takes a little work, but I have few cookings on my computers. You can also navigate to the cookies and delete them manually.

Fourth, and last, my final HJT log is below. And just want to thank you again. If something else comes up should I reply to this thread again or start a new one?

My friend, someone will always be here to help, I am going to give you some information now and while there are no 100% guarantees, if you follow the advice in these links and use a little common sense in dealing with the internet, you have a good change of remaining uninfected. This link will remain open for a day or two, if at some point down the road you do need some additional help, then start a new thread.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
