My W98 GOLD(original with patches) has started locking up since the last MS patches KB891711 and IE6 SP1 cumulative update KB890923. I run Spybot, Ad-aware, defrag, scandisk, McAfee, all weekly. Computer has run fine for last 5 years.

Here is my scan.

thanks for taking a look and helping.

Hi WildBill53, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. Let me apologize, as it looks like you were overlooked in the many. That's why our fine administrative staff Pinned this place to post after five days. Since you must still need help, please follow these directions in the posted order.

1) Download CWShredder from the follow link. Update if available, then chose FIX not scan. Allow the program to run and remove anything it locates. Let me know the results in your next post.
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Popu…WShredder.shtml

2) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Take the time to review the instructions on the download page so that when I ask you to run it you will know what you are doing.

3) Make sure your version of WEATHERBUG is 6.0. Earlier version contained adware. Uninstall all versions before 6.0.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ms101.mysearch.com/sa/srchlft.html

(next is optional: Netzip, Real Download, Netscape Smart Download = your call)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Let's check for trojans in case any are hiding, run this free online scan, scan the whole system and set it to clean or fix anything it locates. Let me know what it finds and the exact name and location of anything it locates but can't remove. You may be asked to install an ActiveX, please do so as this program is safe and it can not run without it.

Run CCleaner then restart the computer and post a new log in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let us know how you are running.

Thanks…pskelley

Hi pskelly, Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. Work work work. 1) CWShreader did not find anything. Only unhid IE tabs 2) Got CCleaner 3) Weatherbug is 6.04 new one came out today. 6.05 4) Remove all those you listed. 016 - DPF did not show up 5)Scanned for trojans. Found C:\My Downloads\installed updates\Pop Up Killer\SetupPopNot.exe and listed it as IRC - Worm.Momma. and 541 cookies. Downloaded A Square Personal Trial and ran it. It ckleaned up the cookies but did not show the Worm.Momma and file is still there. 6) Ran CCleaner, all 3 tabs, and let it fix everything. Still locks up in IE after surfing a while. If I kill the stopped window quickly I can continue. If I wait a while it will lock up all IE windows and eventually lock up the whole machine. What should I try next? I will run a scan and post it next. This is the third time I have tried to post. It locks up. thanks for your help WildBill53

Hello again WB, Thanks for all of the feedback, it does help Here is what I would like you to do.
Run this scan: http://www.purityscan.com/uninstall.html Just follow the directions. When that is done, then do this:

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of this item if there:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CriticalUpdate] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wucrtupd.exe -startup

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

SHOW HIDDEN FILES: Follow the instructions in the link to enable hidden files for your operating system.
You may wish to reverse this process if you have any concern about anyone getting into these hidden system files.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete this item if there:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wucrtupd.exe >>> file

Empty the recycle bin and restart the computer.

Here is another online trojan if you wish to try it:
http://scan.sygatetech.com/pretrojanscan.html
This is a free trial period download if you need it.
http://www.misec.net/trojanhunter/

I have an old Compaq with Windows 98SE on it and you probably know much about your computer after this much time. I will ask if your maintenance is all up to date and send along a few links pertaining to the subject. I am interested in if you are getting any messages when this freeze occurs?

http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/usingwi…ing/default.asp
http://pdxtc.com/200002-win98basicplan.htm
http://www.computertips.com/Windows/Window…ntenancewiz.htm

I would also suggest you allow http://www.pcpitstop.com/ to take a look to see if they spot anything.

Post a new log after you finish removing that PurityScan malware. Thanks…Phil
And your comments.
Thanks…pskelley

Hey Phil

I ran purityscan and then ran Ad-Aware with the latest update. It found about 27 items and deleted them.

Remove CriticalUpdate entry and file. Should this be put back from Micorsofts site?

Sygatescan could not see anything with Aonealarm on or off.

Maintenance:
Defrag at 1:00 AM tuesdays
Disk Cleanup 2:30 first Monday
ScanDisk 2:00 AM Wednesday
McAfee scan 11:00 Monday and Thursday

Run Ad-Aware and Spybot once a week manually

Will go the PCPITSTOP

THanks for your help

Hey Bill, Thought you were gone… :D

I ran purityscan and then ran Ad-Aware with the latest update. It found about 27 items and deleted them.

Here is a link to make sure you have the most recent version of each and how to configure Ad-aware properly. All you need to do is update once they are down: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php

Remove CriticalUpdate entry and file. Should this be put back from Micorsofts site?

See this information: http://castlecops.com/startuplist-9165.html This was a bad piece of malware pretending to be something else to keep us from finding it.

Your log is clean, good job  Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
