XP dial-up connection is going west!

4 min read

I have unwittingly imported something into my PC that continually rewrites the data fields (username and telephone number) in the XP dialup connction dialog.

It also seems that my mail downloading is taking forever (I use Outlook 2003, and it goes through sending and receiving for seven accounts. It seems to take an age to go from one to the next)

I have run NAV (with current updates), AdWare (todays updates) and SpyBot S+D (also todays version), but they are all reporting clean. These utilities did find some spyware/adware/malware, but are now reporting a clean system.

If there is anything suspicious about the following HijackThis log, I would be very grateful to know!

Log follows - thanks for your efforts…

Hello Adrian, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. If you still need help, please follow these instructions in the order they are posted.

1) This item: C:\Program Files\Cdmt\Enptbt.exe does not identify. We call that a random named trojan and in this case it is probably running from your Prefetch folder. If you do not know what it is, we will remove it.

2) C:\WINDOWS\system32\usbn.exe (big part of the problem)
Adult content dialer
http://castlecops.com/startuplist-6857.html

3) Open Task Manager then the Processes tab, locate hightlite and end process on this item: C:\WINDOWS\system32\usbn.exe

4) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Take the time to review the instructions on the download page so that when I ask you to run it you will know what you are doing.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Let's check for trojans in case any are hiding, run this free online scan, scan the whole system and set it to clean or fix anything it locates. Let me know what it finds and the exact name and location of anything it locates but can't remove. You may be asked to install an ActiveX, please do so as this program is safe and it can not run without it.

Run CCleaner then restart the computer and post a new log in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let us know how you are running.

Thanks…pskelley

Hi, pskelly

Thanks for your assistance. :)

First, a reportback on your recommended procedures:

Between posting my HJT log and your response, I was advised to run X-Cleaner. I did this, and X-Cleaner found and removed BonziBuddy, Huntbar, MySearch, SearchRelevancy, Sidefind, Win32Dyfuca.a and Windupdates. Probably because I ran this, some of the items that you suggested that I get HJT to fix were not there any more. (C:\Program files\Cdmt\ … was one of the items I couldn't find). A number of the Adult Dialer items were also gone.

HJT fixed the others. I removed usbn.exe directly but had to run Safe Mode before I could delete vbsys2.dll. The Windows\Prefetch folder had 107 items in it…

TrojanScan reported 5 suspect cookies only - acp(thats me)@2o7[1].txt, acp@atdmt[2].txt, acp@burstnet[2].txt, acp@doubleclick[2].txt and acp@fastclick[2].txt. I couldn't download the a-squared utility to remove the, so I found and deleted them manually. (I suspect that CCleaner would have xed them anyway.]

CCleaner ran without any problems.

My dialer username and telephone number now stay as I have set them - their being changed to something unrecognizable was what alerted me to a problem in the first place.

It is too early to say how the system is running - I will post that in a few days. There is one thing that I have noticed over the past few days, and that is still with me. Whether it is the result of malware I have no idea:

I have two computers in my office - my PC which I mostly use, and a notebook which I usually only use when out of town. With these recent problems, I have been using the notebook to connect to my ISP for mail and internet. The notebook always connects at a significantly higher
kbps rate than does the PC (typically 50.6kbps as against 42kbps of the PC), on the same telephone line, which has a two-way splitter one to the PC modem, one to the notebook. Both machines run XP. The PC is a 3GHz machine with a 56kbps external modem (3Com), the notebook is a 1.7MHz machine (HP/Compaq) with a 56kbps internal Conextant modem. Is there a known effect of any malware that could cause this disparity in connect spees? I should try connecting the external modem to the notebook to see what connect speeds I get then, but I don't have a suitable COM cable. The external modem used to connect at 50.6 most of the time, until the connect speed dropped a few months ago. I thought it was bad lines, but the notebook's performance suggests that this is not the case. Could this be residual malware? <_<

Once I am happy that nothing critical has disappeared, I will purge the restore points.

Once again, thanks for the assistance. I will post a follow-up report in a couple of days.

Adrian

PS This may be of interest - just as the download of CCleaner completed, NAV reported that it had found the Bloodhound.Exploit.6 virus. Whether this came from the www.ccleaner.com site I don't know.

Hi Adrian, The log looks to be clean of malware. Take a look at this line:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *new-search.net*;*x-google.net*;

I don't like the looks of the items at the end, if you do not know them then you may wish to remove that line. Make sure ALL quarantine areas in the software your are running is purged, the area is called Recovery if you are running Spybot S&D. It is very likely something is being identified like this or perhaps even in System Restore. You would know if it is in SR as the pathway would include the _Restore. As far as Prefetch, I included the information because lots of folks do not even know they have a Prefetch folder. It does an important job to speed up delivery to you and malware writers often hide stuff in this folder so it can be seen in running processes. Since your log is clean, Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

I am afraid the other issues you are experiencing are not in my area of expertise, but if you do not manage to resolve it, I may be able to point you in the right direction for information. Let me know, I will leave this thread open for a few days in the event you have a questions and I suggest you look to the links for valuable information to help you stay safe and clean.

Thanks…pskelley
