Hola guys!

I'm hoping this could be the place where i get some knowledgeable help. I'm having a possible problem, but aren't well-versed enough (computer-wise) to know my way through to identifying it.

I noticed when accessing my Hotmail account yesterday (not owning a gmail account, sadly!) that the sign in page appeared different. I chalked it up to a new design, but checked the address first and noticed it also was different.

I closed the page without signing in, ran AdAware and Spybot, deleted the critical errors in those and rebooted. I tried to get on the Hotmail sign in page again, and it was still the same. I asked a friend to go there and take a screenshot for me to compare. They were fairly different, and whenever i open that page i suddenly have a Yahoo toolbar, and am using IE according to the bar at the top, when i'm actually using Firefox.

That said, and with these logs, can anyone tell me what's going on? I've been told it may be a problem with the Host file.
(Also, if it makes any difference, i'm using broadband.)
Any other info you need, just let me know! :)

Hi pseudonymph! I'm 'KotaGuy. Welcome to TomCoyote! If you still require assistance, could you please post a new HijackThis log. It has been a few days since you've posted and something might have changed since then. In addition… can you make sure you post the complete log… the one you posted was incomplete… I need header information and all. Thanks!
Sure, no worries. Sorry about that, i thought i had posted it all.
Here's the new one -

Thanks for posting the new log.

Which version of Limewire are you using? The older versions come bundled with malware. If you are using an older version, please uninstall it.

Download and install CCleaner. Don't run it yet.

Make sure no files are hidden. To do this:

1. Click Start.
2. Open My Computer.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. Select the View Tab.
5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
6. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
7. Click Yes to confirm.
8. Click OK.

Run and scan with HijackThis. With all other browsers and windows closed, place a check beside the following and fix:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [l173ja4a] C:\WINDOWS\system32\l173ja4a.exe

Boot into Safe Mode. To do this:

1. Reboot your computer.
2. Tap the F8 button as your computer is booting to bring you to the Advanced Options Menu.
3. Select Safe Mode and press Enter.

Search for and delete this file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\l173ja4a.exe

Browse to your C:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Delete all the files in the folder, do not delete the folder itself. Empty your Recycle Bin. Run CCleaner.

Reboot Windows normally and post a new HijackThis log please.
Okay, all done.
As a precaution, i uninstalled, and then reinstalled Limewire for the latest version.

No, that's all now, nothing else is doing anything out of the ordinary. Thanks so much KotaGuy. :) (This may be the part where i gush "You're my hero!", but it's too early in the morning for that, lol.)
Good to hear! Glad I was able to help!

Now, some suggestions…

To clean up any remnants that may have been left behind, I suggest doing a couple online virus scans. A couple good ones are Panda ActiveScan and TrendMicro HouseCall. Let them fix anything they find. Reboot between each scan.

Visit this page for proper configuration of Spybot and Ad-Aware. Run and scan with both, letting them fix whatever they find. Remember to reboot between each scan.

Now that your computer is clean, its a good time to reset your System Restore point. This will ensure a clean backup to fall upon if you ever need it. To do this:
  • Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
Reboot your computer, follow the steps above, this time unchecking the "Turn off System Restore" and reboot.

I recommend downloading and installing SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE-SPYAD as well. You can get them from the links in my sig. The programs are free and can be updated… so please do so. Installing these will go a long way in preventing reinfection.

If you don't have one, I recommend installing a Firewall. I'm sure you've heard of ZoneAlarm.

Check out the links in my sig named How'd I get Infected and Understanding Spyware as well, some good information for you.

Other than that, remember to update Windows frequently, update your protection programs, scan often and…

Surf Safe!
