I cleaned my PC a week ago. Now I don't see any popup ads. But still play with HijackThis, like with a new toy. Tonight I found a new entry in the log - under O17. Is this something unwanted? I was downloading Microsoft updates at this time.

Thanks,

Igor

Thanks, this is ISP indeed! I would like to ask one more question. Since I installed SpywareGuard (and did SpyBot immunization and ran Spyware Blaster) I am getting the following prompt: _________ File Download Some files can harm your computer. If the information below looks suspicious, or you do not fully trust the source, do not open or save this file. File name: dlm.exe File Type: application From: c:\documents and settings\igor\local settings\temporary internet files Would you like to open file or save it to your computer? ____________ I always press the "Cancel" button And the checkbox below it saying "Always ask before opening this type of file" is checked and disabled, so that I can't uncheck it. Not that I want to uncheck it, but it looks like the old Soviet "we will force you to be happy!" Regards, Igor
Ok, don't let it install. Do this:
In Hijack This, press "Config" > "Miscellaneous Tools".
Now, under the "Generate Startuplist log" button, check both the "List also minor sections" and "list empty sections" boxes.

Next, press "Generate Startuplist Log"
This will generate a text file that will list all running processes, all applications that are loaded automatically when you start Windows, and more.

Go to Edit > select all, copy it and post its contents here.

Then go to Tools:Internet Options:General:Temporary Internet Files and hit delete.

You may need to reboot into safe mode. How to reboot into 'SAFE MODE' Browse to c:\documents and settings\igor\local settings\temporary internet files and delete everything.

Reboot into normal mode and see if the file tries to load.

Also, any other info you have about the file trying to load?
Thanks for the reply. As soon as I got that dialog again, I did what you said and I put below what I have got (and I don't have any other info on the file it is trying to load).

After I did reboot I browsed a couple of sites - then got this dialog again and checked the directory c:\documents and settings\igor\local settings\temporary internet files. Look who is there:
dlm.exe from cnt.rapidblaster.com/install/dlm.exe
I killed RapidBlaster with your help using the RapidBlasterKiller a week ago! I still don't let the download happen. I don't have the RapidBlaster directory in my c:\progam files anymore. How did it get into "temporary files"?!! Anyway, it seems I stopped it from penetrating using the SpywearGuard recommended by you.

Thanks, great job, sspear!!!

Igor

First, make sure you have the latest critical updates. Make sure you get ALL of them.
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Sometimes these things are embedded into websites you visit. It's possible one of your favorite websites is how you were infected to begin with. One sure fire thing we will do now is to block rapidblaster for good.

Go to this site: http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm and download the file hosts.zip.
Next, browse to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC and look for a file named 'hosts'. This is usually a default sample. Rename it to 'oldhosts'.

Run the zip file you downloaded earlier and extract the file 'hosts' into the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC folder.

Explanation: If you open the current hosts file in notepad it looks like this:

# Copyright © 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

The one from mvps looks like this:
# This HOSTS file is a free download from:
#
# Notes: the browser does not read this "#" symbol
# You can create your own notes, after the # symbol
# This *must* be the first line: 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ********************************************************

127.0.0.1 devcnt.rapidblaster.com

This will stop the file from trying to download. The downside is there may be some site you like to visit on this blacklist. It means you shouldn't be going there but if you must you can edit out that site. If you type in a url and get a page not found error then see if it's in the list.

You could also edit the sample hosts file and just add the 3 lines about rapidblaster. It's up to you.

Once you're done, delete your temporary internet files again and close all browser windows and then reopen them. Surf around and let us know if the prompt comes back.

:D
Sspear, thanks, I downloaded the hosts file. For now I added to my original hosts those five lines: 127.0.0.1 rapidblaster.com #[Parasite.RapidBlaster] 127.0.0.1 cnt.rapidblaster.com #[TROJ_ISTBAR.F] 127.0.0.1 devcnt.rapidblaster.com 127.0.0.1 www.rapidblaster.com #[Dialer.Rapidblaster] 127.0.0.1 freemp3blaster.com #[installs RapidBlaster] Let's see how it works. The prompt to run dlm.com appeared today, but now I will close all browser windows and see what happens. Igor
And also clean out all your temporary internet files. In internet Explorer, go to Tools>Internet options, and click on delete files. Your original message showed that the RB parasite was attempting to install from there.
sspears and dave38, it is one week from the "action". RapidBlaster didn't show up. Thanks for your help! :wavey: Igor
Glad we could help :D
