My browser gets redirected, usually to a Search 42 page. Norton AntiVirus has detected two Adware files: C:\\WINDOWS\security\logs\dosbak.dll and C:\\WINDOWS\Cursors\xmlmfc.dll, but I have been unable to remove these files. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello Cheryl, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. You have a new rather nasty trojan called trojan.vundo.b. The good news is Symantec created a removal tool for this trojan. The bad news is if you do not follow the directions exactly the fix will not work. The only way to remove it then is a very complex manual fix. You must read all instructions carefully and follow them to the letter. When they say do the fix in SAFE MODE and to disconnect all internet cables, they mean it. This trojan updates itself rapidly and any internet connection will cause the fix to fail. I would print the instructions as you will not see them in safe mode. Here is your link to the removal tool:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcen…moval.tool.html

Once this item is removed, and it looks like this in your log:
O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {B8B55274-0F9A-41E5-9067-A3539BD9E860} - C:\WINDOWS\security\logs\dosbak.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: dosbak - C:\WINDOWS\security\logs\dosbak.dll

Post a new log in this same thread so we can see if there is anything left to do. Include your feedback please.

Thanks…pskelley

Hi, thanks for helping. I followed your instructions, and the removal tool reported that the Trojan.VundoB.exe was not found on my computer. I ran it again just to be sure and it gave me the same message. Below is my latest Hijackthis log - the dosbak.dll entries look the same as they did in the log I originally posted….
and Search 42 is still hijacking my browser :-(

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hello Cheryl,

the dosbak.dll entries look the same as they did in the log I originally posted….
and Search 42 is still hijacking my browser :-(  Any suggestions?

My suggestion would be to reread the instructions and try it again. The option is the manual fix which I will post for you below. The symptoms of the BHO hijacking will not go away until this trojan is removed.

MANUAL REMOVAL INSTRUCTIONS:

Step 1:

Please download Process Explorer by Systernals from HERE

Also download KillBox by Option^Explicit from HERE

Step 2:

Download the file and save it to your desktop:

FixVundo Registry File

Step 3:

Print out the following instructions as you will not have Internet Access for the rest of this fix.

Then boot up in SAFE MODE

The rest of this fix must be done in safe mode.

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double-click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of dosbak.dll once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of the dosbak.dll's under winlogon click OK.

If you see any .ini or ,bak files with either the same name or the file name in reverse, kill them as well

Next double-click on explorer.exe, select the Threads tab, and again click once on each instance of dosbak.dll then click the kill button.

If you see any .ini or ,bak files with either the same name or the file name in reverse, kill them as well

Once you have done that click OK again.

Next run HijackThis and place a check beside each of the following.

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {B8B55274-0F9A-41E5-9067-A3539BD9E860} - C:\WINDOWS\security\logs\dosbak.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: dosbak - C:\WINDOWS\security\logs\dosbak.dll

Now click fix checked and close HijackThis.

Now double-click on the vundo.reg file that you saved on your desktop earlier and allow it to merge with the registry.

Step 4:

Double click on Killbox.exe and then check the delete on reboot button.

Enter the following filepath and filename into the Full path of file to delete box

C:\WINDOWS\security\logs\dosbak.dll

Hi Cheryl (my daughter's name) You have indeed killed that trojan  You go girl  . We have one minor problem in that you returned your computer to Selective Startup and I can not say it is clean unless I see everything running. Go back to MSCONFIG and enable all, then run the HJT log and post it, then you can return to SS without a reboot. As soon as possible after you post I will review the log. I will have some great information to help you stay clean and safe at that time. Thanks…Phil
Here is the log. I am eager to hear your advice on keeping my PC clean. Thanks for everything! :D

Hi Cheryl, It's a good thing  nothing hiding in MSCONFIG and your log is clean. If you have not already done so you may return to Selective Startup, no reason to run a program you are not going to use and can always start in Start/AllPrograms when you need it. Now to the clean log, I just wish to be sure you did purge system restore once the trojan was removed. They can get in SR and down the road when you need to use it for something valid, reinfect you. Little buggers!!
As far as the infomation to keep you clean and safe, I will refer you to some of the greats in malware removal. Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

I will leave the thread open for a few days in the event you have a question. I wish you safe surfing :wavey:
