My kid brother has a habit of dling anything and everything he can get a hold of. I found weatherbug and wild tangent, deleted them and ran Ad aware and spybot. I still recieve popups, even when explorer is closed and im looking at a bare desktop. My pcs performance is degrading, and full screen games will minimize when these popups show up. I would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks!

Hello Hotbobaloo and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Also, in msconfig, 2 entries keep showing up after i disable them.

Please make sure all items are checked with msconfig. If anything is unchecked it will not show up in the log. If these are bad items we will have no way of knowing they are there.

Download this tool : LQfix.zip
Unzip it to your Desktop.
Don't use it yet!

IMPORTANT! Reboot the computer into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').

Doubleclick LQfix.bat that you saved on your desktop before.
A dos window will open and close again, that is normal.

Reboot into normal mode and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Hi, and thanks for replying. I dl'ed the program, but when booting into safe mode, I get to the screen when it asks for your password, then the computer resets itself. I tried it about ten times, but cannot enter the password before it resets. I also tried just clicking on the administrator "user" and it just resets as well.
Try the System Configuration Utility method for rebooting the computer into Safe Mode.
* Close all open programs.
* Click Start, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
* Type msconfig and then click OK.
* The System Configuration Utility appears. Check the "/SAFEBOOT" option, and then click OK. You then see the prompt to restart the computer. Click Restart.
* The computer restarts in Safe mode. (This can take several minutes.)
* Perform the troubleshooting steps for which you are using Safe Mode.
* When you are finished with troubleshooting in Safe mode repeat steps 1-5, but in step 4, uncheck "/SAFEBOOT"
* Close all programs and restart the computer as you normally would.
If this does not work, post back and we'll have to do a manual fix.
I managed to get into safe mode by frantically clicking the administrator button. I ran the program you gave me and have a new logfile. Cold a virus actually do that resetting thing to prevent itself form being removed?

Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

Optional items to check with HijackThis for improved performance.
Automatic updates for ViewPoint products such as ViewPoint Media Player (as bundled with AOL, AOL Instant Messenger, Compuserve, etc) Recommended to check here and remove with Add/Remove Programs.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
I see no signs of a Firewall or Antivirus program on your computer. I recommend downloading and installing the following free programs:
ZoneAlarm Firewall
AVG7 Antivirus.
Be sure to check for updates after installation.

Step 3
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
ok, I did everything you said, and im posting a new logfile. It looks like there are no popups. Thanks so much for all your help!

Your new log is clean. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
4. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
Your welcome. Glad the computer is working better now. :)
