I am new to this forum and this is my first request for help. My computer is about a year old and has really slowed down. Lots of pop ups etc!! All my kids use this computer and have downloaded some (very little) games. I would appreciate any help you wonderful volunteers have to offer. I have ad aware and spybot installed as well as hijack this. Here is the log. Look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks Again!
Thanks for sending your HijackThis log.

Your system is HEAVILY infected with malware. It will take several posts to get you cleaned up correctly, and then we'll make some recommendations for protecting your systm going forward.

For the first fix, we'll tackle a nasty infection called 'peper trojan' and then run some general scans to clean as much automatically as possible.

Then, after reviewing the next HJT log, we'll do the main fix, and if needed a minor clean-up fix after that.

Here we go…

Okay, you have the Peper Trojan (among other problems) and we'll tackle that first. It is a very stubborn infection which requires two different tools to remove. Please follow these instructions in order:

1. Download Newuninst.exe.

2. Run it with an active internet connection.

3. Reboot to finish removing the entries it found.

4. Run the tool a second time (again with an active internet connection).

5. Reboot to finish removing the entries it found.

For the second tool:

1. Please Download PeperFix.exe.

2. Start the tool and click Find and Fix.

3. Reboot to finish removing what it found.

4. Run the tool a second time (again with an active internet connection).

5. Reboot to finish removing the entries.

Then, let's run a battery of general scans to give your system a "good scrubbing".
  • Run Spybot S&D 1.3 (Suggested Setup Tutorial Here), then reboot.
  • Run Adaware SE (Suggested Setup Tutorial Here), then reboot.
  • And run either of these two Online virus scans: Panda Active Scan or TrendMicro Housecall and put on Auto Clean.
  • Then, run the online trojan scan at: http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/ and delete any problem it finds.
Please let me know if anything can not be cleaned by these utilities.

Reboot a last time and create a fresh HijackThis log. Repost it here.

I'll be notified automatically when that happens.

Thanks
daveai
Daveai,

I followed the instructions and During the Panda Active Scan it said that it found 3 viruses but 2 were disinfected and 1 was renamed Bck/Sd windows/system32/McAfeeAv.exe

During one of the scans, my Norton AntiVirus said that I had the Downloader MScache virus that could not be deleted.

Also during the PeperFix, it said that I did not have this Trojan.

One more thing, every time that I get on my computer, the system32 folder opens. Very annoying.

Here is a new HJT log:

Thanks again for all your advice
rahlee – Thanks for the response. And, good job on the first fix. This system is alot cleaner :)

Since you will not be able to access this page in safe mode during this fix, please print these instructions now, or save them to your desktop, to help keep track of the steps.

1 – To start,, follow this link for instructions to enable 'show all files' for your system.

2 – Next, use Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs to remove any of the following malware that you find:

Viewpoint Media Player

3 – Run HijackThis, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page_bak = http://www.adelphiapowerpage.com/

And, this is an optional item you may choose to fix:

Application Scheduler is installed along with RealOne Player and is running in startup, and is not needed. Once installed, it runs independently of RealOne Player and consumes resources. You can fix this with HJT, but you will also need to set it not to load in RealPlayer itself to keep it from resetting itself: (1) Start RealOne Player (2) Tools -> Preferences (3) Automatic services in the Categories pane (4) Uncheck all options and then OK This is the item to fix in HJT:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, and remember to make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, then click fix checked.

4 – Reboot into Safe Mode (How do I boot into "Safe" mode?), then use Windows Explorer to delete the following lists of program files and folders, if they still exist.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\tlmkz.dll <– this file

C:\WINDOWS\anxkyekw.exe <– this file

C:\Program Files\syslaunch.exe <– this file

MSNV.EXE <– this file

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\ <– this folder

C:\Program Files\couponsandoffers\ <– this folder

Please let me know about any problems with the file/folder deletes.

5 – Next, use "Start > Run" and type in "%temp%" (without the quotes). Delete the entire contents of that "temp" folder (use "Edit > Select All", press "Delete", click "Yes").

Then, Empty your Temporary Internet Cache completely. Close all instances of Outlook and and Internet Explorer, then use "Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab" and click the "Delete File" button. When prompted place a check in: "Delete all offline content", then click OK.

Then, use Windows Explorer to clean out ALL the other temp folders on your system (navigate to the folder, use "Edit > Select All", press "Delete", click "Yes"):

* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* Empty your "Recycle Bin".

Be sure that 'C:\Documents and Settings\Luke Hinlicky\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\' is included in this process.

Please let me know about any problems with the temp file deletes.

6 – Now, reboot normally and run either of these two Online virus scans: Panda Active Scan or TrendMicro Housecall and put on Auto Clean.

Now, reboot once again, and run HijackThis to create a new logfile. Repost it here, and if you had any problems with the steps outlined above, please let us know what they were. Your response and the new logfile will determine the next steps for this fix.

Also, give me an update on this please:

One more thing, every time that I get on my computer, the system32 folder opens. Very annoying.

Thanks
daveai
ok daveai,

I did what you said. During the cleaning of the temp files a error message stating that tvm and desktop. ini were system files and shouldn't be removed so…I didn't say yes to deleting them,…..sorry…didn't know what to do. Then, when I ran the panda scan it said …again that I have a renamed virus:Bck/sd…so here is the hjt file

thanks again for all your help: Rahlee
rahlee – Congratulations, based on your last HijackThis logfile, no spyware was found. Good job!

Now, please allow me to suggest some prevention steps to keep your computer clean and secure going forward. You may have already taken a few of the steps, but it never hurts to take a quick look :)

1 – Use an AntiVirus Software, and be sure you update it at least once a week. There are several very good free programs available. Grinler offers an outstanding overview at Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

2 – To reduce re-infection potential for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing three free programs: SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE/Spyad.

3 – Use AdAware SE and Spybot S&D; to regularly to scan your system.

4 – It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and XP are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

5 – I strongly recommend that you consider using a Firewall. Just by using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Check out what Lawrence Abrams has to say at Understanding and Using Firewalls

An excellent overview is: So how did I get infected in the first place?. Be sure to visit the browser test link at the end of the article to really see how secure your system is!!

Thanks
daveai
Daveai, Thank you for helping me with the spyware and malware. I do run Norton Antivirus and during the clean up, it noted that I have a virus –Downloader.mscashe – that could not be fixed. How do I fix this? Sorry, one more annoying thing: everytime I open up my account, the system32 folder pops up and you have to x it off. Why does it do this and how do I get rid of it? Thanks again for your help. Rahlee
Thanks rahlee.

I will have to ask some others here about the system32 folder. Are you saying that the Windows Explorer opens up or just a folder window?

With respect to the Norton reported 'downloader.mscache' I am researching that.

Does Norton report a file pathname for that?

In the meantime I'd like you to try a scan with a different product, called A-squared:

Please download, install, update and run A-squared (A2) from:

http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/

After the update, scan your system and let it clean anything it finds.

Then let me know how it went and provide a fresh HJT log.\

Thanks
daveai
I'm back.

The system32 issue is a known problem. There are numerous references to it on the Microsoft Community newsgroup for Win-XP. I've quoted a post below from an individual who has developed a utility to help with the problem.

NOTE: Before taking any of hte steps discussed below, be sure to back up your registry. See this link for instructions: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?…=1&PA=1&SD=HSCH

See the section called • Back up the whole registry

Either that or your system is not clean as of yet, as this is a sign.  In
the meantime:

This is a known issue for owners of an SB Audigy 2 sound card.  Re-enable
the item in MSConfig.

Then see www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm, Line 260, Right column for a
small utility (called "System32 Folder Opens Upon Boot") that will correct this for you. The problem is caused by a
leading space before the /L:ENG.  This causes the problem, the script
corrects it.

If this is not the case, see:

System32 Folder Opens When Logging on to Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=170086

Verify that all the values in these keys do not contain any incorrect,
incomplete, or null entries (such as ""). Also make sure that all entries
that have spaces are included within quotes.  These values can be checked
here:  Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
