I have tried without success recently to get a full solution from your forum. I thought that you had in fact gone out of business, since no responses after 2 back and forths. Anyway, my son's computer is loaded with garbage, despite AdAware, SpyBot, Spyware Blaster, Google pop up blocker. Would you be able to help?

Hello jdell. :wavey:

Your son has quite a compilation of bad items on the computer. This will take several posts to fix so please do not expect a quick fix.

First, we'll remove a few of the bad items than after a new log is posted, we'll tackle the About:Blank problem.

Download this tool: LQfix.zip
Unzip it to your Desktop.
Don't use it yet!

Please download LSPFix from here.

*Disconnect from the Internet and close all Internet Explorer and Explorer Windows.
*Run the program.
*On the opening screen, click the "I know what I'm doing" checkbox.
*Check all instances of fltmgr.dll (and nothing else)
*Move them to the "Remove" pane.
*Then click Finish.

Reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup) and delete the following file:

C:\Windows\System32\fltmgr.dll

While still in Safe Mode, Doubleclick LQfix.bat that you saved on your desktop before.
A doswindow will open and close again, that is normal.

Reboot normally. Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove WinTools if found.

Run at least two of the following online virus scans making sure to reboot in between each one. Allow them to fix anything they find.
You need to use Internet Explorer or Netscape browsers.
Bitdefender
Pandasoftware
Trend Micro << Click Auto Clean
Symantec Security Check << click scan for viruses
RAV Online Virus Scanner << Enter your e-mail address and click on To continue without subscribing
McAfee

I see no signs of a Firewall or Antivirus program on your computer. I recommend downloading and installing the following free programs: ZoneAlarm Firewall and AVG7 Antivirus. Be sure to check for updates after installation.

Please update to HijackThis 1.99.1. (Open HijackThis and click config.. < Misc. Tools and click Check for Update Online.)
Scan with HijackThis and post the new log as a reply to this thread. After posting the log please do not reboot the computer as the infection morphs each time the computer is restarted.
Alan- Thanks for your assistance. Yes, he does indeed have a lot of junk in there! Below is my latest hjt log. I followed your instructions. It is odd, though, because I recetly installed TrendMicro Internet Security on all of our computers, so why it is non-functional is a problem. I will reinstall. I ran the antivirus scans, and Rav and bitdefender workd fine. Pand and Trendmicro stopped beacuse IE noted a problem, and the first time I chose send no error report, and IE closed (could the virus have set this up?); the second time I ignored the message but the scan never seemed to be completed, and ran for about 50 minutes without results. Symantec seemed to be a scam, since I ran the scan, then they requested my email address (not a problem) and said they would email me the trial ware for removal!

Wow- quite a lot! Fairly straightforward, but some miinor bumps. Workstation NetLogon Service and .NET Framework Service were already stopped, but I did disable them also. When I ran hjt, most of those files you listed were not evident. I was only able to find/check/fix the first R1-HKCU\software….ton/search.html file; the 2nd and 3rd RO files, HKLM\software…local page= and HKCU\software…linksfoldername=; 1st, 3rd, 4th O4 files, HKLM\….eliteljs32.exe, HKLM\…ntpu32.exe, and HKLM…javaon.exe; both O15 files, both Trustred zones; O16- DPF. No others were on the log, as you can see.
Upon attempting to delete files, only eliteljs, ntpu and javaon were present to delete; the others, including the folder WinTools were not present.
I am wondering if the user under which I have done these fixes is important. In other words, I have accessed all of this via my son's user name, not via the administrator during the safe mode. Does it matter?

Thanks!
That log looks much better.

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

O9 - Extra button: Ebates - {6685509E-B47B-4f47-8E16-9A5F3A62F683} - file://C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\Sy350\Tp350\scri350a.htm (file missing) (HKCU)

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Please delete the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker

Step 3
MOST IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and IE to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is on the internet.
I recommend going to the following link and update to SP2. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer.
Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates

Here is a great link that explains the procedure for updating to SP2 with less complications (scroll down to the second post).

Step 4
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Alan- Computer seems faster, without browser hijackers, programs working now as they are supposed to. I updated Windows as suggested, and installed my new TrendMicro Internet Security. I will probably also switch to Firefox as I have done on my own computer.
I did what you suggested, but the file C:Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker did not exist.

Your new log is clean.:)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
4. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

AVG AntiVirus - Free antivirus program if you currently are not using one.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Here are three very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3
AdAware SE v1.05
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D; and Adaware SE
A2 Squared

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
Thanks tons Alan. We appreciate your help, especially getting virtually everything done today! I am contributing to the site immediately! Ciao! :D jdell
