Contol Panel Issue

I have an interesting issue with a relative's computer I thought I would post here first. This is a WinXP box that will not allow the user to open the contol panel. Doing so only displays the wait icon and then a notice that Dr. Watson has crashed. I have scanned for viruses and adware with both Ad-Aware and Spybot. However, the problem still exsists and I suspect adware. I ran hijackthis and see some things in the log that I am not familiar with. Unless there is a chance this issue is being caused by something else, and with your permission, I would like to post that log here to allow you guys to take a look. Thanks.
Ok, well, in that case, I'll go ahead and post the log. There are a few things here suspect but I'd rather get some opinions before I start blowing stuff away.

Thanks.

Hello DanaF and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Let's clean your log up a little with these two very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3
AdAware SE v1.05
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D; and Adaware SE

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Scan with HijackThis and post the new log as a reply to this thread. After posting the log please do not reboot the computer and limit the Internet time as these can cause the infection to morph.
I've done as instructed. Here's the new log:

That log cleaned up nicely.
Just one bad item left to fix.

Download this file to your desktop.
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select Install.

Note : Since the Domains are deleted SpywareBlaster protection must be re-enabled, Spybot's Immunize feature must be used again, and you'll also have to re-install IE-SpyAd if installed.

Fix this item with HijackThis if it is still present. (shouldn't be)

This infection has been known to remove certain system files. Make sure the following files are present:

control.exe
rundll32.exe
wmplayer.exe
msconfig.exe
notepad.exe
shell.dll
SDHelper.dll

Check this link for the proper location for those files. If any are missing you can download them from there as well.
http://www.richardthelionhearted.com/~merijn/winfiles.html

For your problem, control.exe is the file you will most likely find is missing but you should still check for the others as well.

Post a new HijackThis log as a reply to this thread.
Let us know how the computer is behaving now.
Interestingly enough, the control panel started operating just before your intial reply. Although it was obvious something was still fooling with it.

The only file you listed that was missing was SDhelper.dll. It has been replaced.

Here's the new hijackthis log file:

If everything here looks good, I'd like to ask you another question or two on the next reply.

Thanks again.

If everything here looks good, I'd like to ask you another question or two on the next reply.

Ask away. I won't guarantee I'll have an answer though.

Your new log is clean. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
4. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

AVG AntiVirus - Free antivirus program if you currently are not using one.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
Thanks alot! The question I have concerns aboutbuster and CWshredder. Can these programs be run on a regular basis to search for this stuff?
AboutBuster is designed strictly to help fix the About:Blank infection. I would not see a need to run this program unless you are reinfected with this again. In that event I would recommend posting a new log to this or another hijackthis forum for help in diagnosis as there are several forms of this infection. CWShredder could be run occasionally to check for problems but I would still recommend posting a hijackthis log if it is found. Most users will remove these programs after their computer is clean as there should be no need for them again as long as the proper precautions are taken while on-line. I hope this helps.
