I can hardly even access this site because any and all web surfing is hijacked by MSN auto search bar. It has infected my desktop, and today, my remaining functional computer, my laptop. Everything reverts to MSN search instantly. Only email works. here's my log. I hope I can access this forum using another computer…ugh!

Hello whatgrayhair? and welcome to the forum, Your Hijackthis program is current but it needs to reside in its own folder, we will use this program to make changes to your system and it will create backups of the changes, if HJT is not in its own folder we will lose those backup. Simple to do, just create a new folder on your C:\ drive and name it HIJACKTHIS, browse to where it is currently, right click on the icon and choose CUT, then scroll to your new HIJACKTHIS FOLDER, open it and right click and choose PASTE. So..it should look like this C:\HIJACKTHIS\HIJACKTHIS.EXE.
Hello again whatgrayhair?,

It looks like you have a virus and some malware on your system. I would like you to run both these online virus scans, set them to fix or auto clean what they find.

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

I just wanted to point out that the Bearshare program you are running is known to include Spyware with it, it is your option to delete this progam, if it was my machine, I would. You can uninstall it via the ADD-REMOVE PROGRAMS in the control panel.

Now I would like you to run Hijackthis (SCAN ONLY) and put a checkmark in the following entries, close all open windows and browsers and click on FIX CHECKED.

* R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.wdbj7.com/
* R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&t…sario&pf=laptop
* R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&t…sario&pf=laptop
* O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinLoad] C:\WINDOWS\system32\Winload.exe

This one is optional, if you recognize the site than keep it, if not let HJT fix it.
* O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&tp=iehome&locale=EN_US&c=Q304&bd=presario&pf=laptop

* Now enable windows to show all files and folders

SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS

* Click on MY COMPUTER
* Then on your C: Drive
* Then to TOOLS/ FOLDER OPTIONS/ VIEW
* Choose the radio button to SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS
* Take the checkmark out of HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES
* Then APPLY/ OK

* Don't forget to reverse this once your computer is clean

Now reboot into SAFEMODE

To Enter SAFEMODE

* Go to START/ SHUT OF YOUR COMPUTER/ RESTART
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu.
* Use the UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the ENTER KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD

Delete the following files if present
* C:\WINDOWS\system32\ Winload.exe <–This file only

This is optional only if you decide to uninstall this program
* C:\Program Files\BearShare\BearShare.exe <– This Entire Baershare Folder

Then reboot normally, run HJT and post a new log please.
Ken thank you for your advice. It will take some trickery because I cannot access any site at all without MSN search immediately hijacking it. Therefore, I cannot even GET to the housecall/panda sites you recommend. After literally a few hours of clicking the "stop" button as I try to access the site, I might just time it right and get it to load. I was able to get Spybot loaded in the days I waited for your reply and successfully ran that, although it didn't affect the problem. I can go ahead and delete the Bearshare, but I am sad to see it go. My children are all teen musicians, and it is especially helpful pulling up an ancient song such as "Days of Wine and Roses" so they can hear how the song is supposed to sound. Are there similar programs that are known to be much more trouble-free? I will post again once I am able to run the virus scans. Thank you, Ken.
whatgrayhair?

Go ahead and keep Bearshare for the time being, but before you run the virus scanners, go ahead and run HJT and delete the lines I suggested.

* R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.wdbj7.com/
* R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&t…sario&pf=laptop
* R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&t…sario&pf=laptop
* O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinLoad] C:\WINDOWS\system32\Winload.exe

Then do the hidden files and safemode thing and delete this file if still present

* C:\WINDOWS\system32\ Winload.exe <–This file only

Then reboot and try running the scans, then post a new HJT log.
Ken, it was not without deep frustration at trying to outsmart the hijacking MSN Search in order to run them, but I did the Housecall and Pandasoftware scans, the first finding 7 infected files, the second, I think it was 24 or 27. Already removed BearShare, so its a moot point, and ran all the steps you directed. I also tried to get hijackthis from the file on my computer but it says"doesn't know what created the program" yadda yadda yadda, so I went back to your website, after finally muscle-ing my way past MSN Search and ran it that way. Hope this gives you the information needed.
Rita

Hi whatgrayhair?,

Now make sure hidden files per my instuctions are enabled, and boot into Safemode

It's important to run HJT (SCAN ONLY) in Safemode and put a checkmark in the following entries and click on FIX CHECKED

* O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BearShare] "C:\Program Files\BearShare\BearShare.exe" /pause

* O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinLoad] C:\WINDOWS\system32\Winload.exe

Now go to C:\Program Files and delete this folder
C:\Program Files\BearShare < – This folder in Bold Only

Now scroll to C:\WINDOWS\system32\ and delete this file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Winload.exe <–This file in Bold Only

Then reboot normally and post a new log please
OK, boss, I did what you asked. I was happy to be able to get on the forum without difficulty, too. That's a step in the right direction! Here is my lastest log, Ken. Thanks, Rita

Ken, Ken, Ken! :rofl: I've been traveling from site to site on "my favorites" and haven't seen any MSN interference anywhere. By George, I think you've done it! Unfortunately for me, the problem on my laptop mimics the problem on my desktop, which I have been battling for weeks and weeks. With that, I went through the MSN people, who politely passed me around from person and Microsoft, who sent me generic replies. Finally, someone from MSN mentioned the words "possible browser hijacking", where I searched komando.com's website which directed me to you. That will be my next project, I'll start submitting the info tonight. I hope you'll be the one to help me, I'm guessing its a very similar problem there, too. No more Bearshare there, either! Now, Ken, is this the time where I need to go back and reverse the "enable windows to show all files and folders"?
whatgrayhair?,

Your log is clean, it's free of Malware and Viruses :D

We need to do a few things as far as installing some great free programs to help keep the bad guys out. This is going to be a mouthful so you may want to print it out, no rush but do it in the order that I have posted.

I have never done this before, but post the log for your laptop in a NEW THREAD not this one and make it attention ken545 and I will keep my eye open for it.

ok, kiddo, here we go

Now that your clean, we need to erase all possible older infected files that may still be lurking on your system.
clean out your TEMP FILES

* This procedure should be run from SAFEMODE for better results.

Now, while in SAFEMODE,

* click on START/ RUN , and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This will open up the temp directory that your machine uses. GO TO EDIT/ SELECT ALL and delete all the contents of that folder.
* Do this for each user of your computer.
* Do this same process for %windir%\temp.

NOW RE-BOOT NORMALLY

DELETE TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB, (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
* When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

* Now empty your Recycle Bin

Now we need to TURN OFF and then TURN BACK ON SYSTEM RESTORE.

This will remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent
any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points
which are likely to be infected)

Turn off System Restore.

* On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

* On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Now while in System Restore, create a new Restore Point.

* Make sure that your ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE is up to date and run a full scan at least once aweek.
* If you want to use a free program, try this one –> http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

* Run SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY/ CHECK FOR UPDATES/ IMMUNIZE and run a full system scan on a regular basis.

* Run AD-AWARE SE PERSONAL/ CHECK FOR UPDATES and run a FULL SYSTEM SCAN on a regular basis.

* Download and run SPYWARE BLASTER,
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/
* Check for updates and enable all protection. This program will just sit in the background and help keep all the bad guys out.

* Download and install WINPATROL
http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html
* This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.

* IE-SPYAD is a one time install, it will put 1000s of bad sites in your IE Restricted Zone.
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_down…23332&fileidx;=1

* WINDOWS UPDATES - Enable Automatic Updates
Right click on MY COMPUTER/ GO TO PROPERTIES/ AUTOMATIC UPDATES and put a mark in the radio button
DOWNLOAD UPDATES FOR ME BUT LET ME CHOOSE WHEN TO INSTALL THEM.

* Consider surfing the net with the FireFox Browser You can download via my signature.It has more features and is a lot
more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
When it asks you if you want it to be your default browser, say NO and take the checkmark out of the box to ask you again. After you
use this for awhile, you will want to make it your default.

* There companion THUNDERBIRD MAIL program was highly favored in PCWorld Magazine,, this to has a good spam filter
and is more secure than Outlook Express.

http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/

* It would be a good idea to install a FireWall, this free one is the best on the net, make sure you install the free version, it is more than adequate for a home user.
Zone Alarm from ZoneLabs

You can reverse the hidden files option now

You can also install CCleaner, it is very safe and does an excellant job cleaning all the crappola out of your system.
http://www.ccleaner.com/
Run this progam along with the disk defrager every other week or so and it will keep your system in tip top shape.
START> ALL PROGRAMS> ASSESSORIES> SYSTEM TOOLS> DISK DEFRAGMENTER

I am going to keep this thead open for you for a few days in case you have any questions about installing any of the programs I just suggested.

On your laptop, you know the drill, install Spybot and Ad-Aware and run the programs, do a couple of the onLine virus scans and then post a log in a NEW THREAD

Thanks for using Tom Coyote, and will keep an eye out for you :)

Ken
