Every time I open Internet Explorer (I have version 7, by the way), the homepage keeps coming back as www.wo114.com no matter what I do. I tried using HijackThis to fix the "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page" entries but they keep coming back. I don't know where they came from as I use Firefox most of the time.

Any help is greatly appreciated. :)
Hi Rubi,

Welcome to TC. :)

Please download this tool > http://www.kztechs.com/sreng/sreng2.zip

1. Extract it to Desktop & double click SREng.exe to run it.

2. Select 'Smart Scan' & tick "Verify Digital Signatures"

3. Click on the [Scan] button

4. When finished, click on the [Save Reports] button & save the log to Desktop

5. Attach the log in your next reply. Don't post it.

Thanks.
When you click on " Add reply" button, under the reply box you should see the Post Options box. Below the Post Options box I can see the File Attachment box.
There isn't an attachment option for me. The only things I see are

Enable signature?

Hi Rubi,

We need to disable your realtime scanners so that they will not interfere with the fix.

To disable Ad-Watch:

1. Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray and select "Restore Ad-Watch".
2. At the bottom of the screen there will be two checkable items called "Active" and "Automatic".Active: Switches Monitoring On or Off without closing
Automatic: Switches Automatic Blocking On or Off
3. Uncheck (red X) both items.
Remember when we have completed cleaning your machine to turn them back on using the same steps but this time select ONLY Active. Ad-Watch will prompt you to accept those registry changes that were made in the cleanup.
Note: When Ad-Watch is re-enabled, it is vital that you accept any changes that may be alerted by Ad-Watch.

To disable TeaTimer:

How to disable TeaTimer during HijackThis Cleanup
Then, Download ResetTeaTimer.bat
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by SpyBot's TeaTimer.
Once its ran delete it, it will not be needed again

When everything is done and your log is clean, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, it is vital that you allow this instead of blocking it.

===================================================

Now, scan with HijackThis and put a checkmark against the following entries:

Make sure that all browsers/windows/application/mail, etc. are closed. Then click on "fix checked". Exit HijackThis.

====================================================

Reboot your computer and post a fresh HijackThis log taken after the reboot please.

Also, I can't see any antivirus applications running, eventhough I see some services for Antivir and Norton. Can you please elaborate on that?

Wow, the log doesn't show any wo114 objects anymore, thanks so much =]

We originally had the trial of Norton 2007, and then it expired and we removed it with Norton Removal Tool, but it probably left some entries behind.

I don't think we've ever used/installed Antivir though, never heard of it.
Hi Rubi,

Wow, the log doesn't show any wo114 objects anymore, thanks so much =]

That's great.

We originally had the trial of Norton 2007, and then it expired and we removed it with Norton Removal Tool, but it probably left some entries behind.
I don't think we've ever used/installed Antivir though, never heard of it.

My understanding of this would be that you're surfing the internet without an antivirus and a firewall which is like walking around with a target sign around your neck and saying "hit me, hit me". Please download and install one of the following free-for-personal use applications immediately , update them, run a full scan with the antivirus and let it fix whatever it finds. Just remember that the rule is to have ONLY ONE antivirus and ONE firewall application running, as having more than one would not make it safer but on the contrary would make the system less secure and less stable.

AVG Free here
Avast here

ZoneAlarm here
Kerio Personal Firewall here
Outpost here
Important: (Windows XP only) If you install a firewall, be sure to turn off the WinXP-firewall! . Some firewall do that automatically. I know, for example, Zone Alarm does that

Looks like you had Stardock's Windowsblind at one time, but uninstalled it. The following entry is left as a result. If it's a program you want, you'll need to reinstall it.

Have the following fixed with HijackThis just like you did before making sure that your realtime scanners are disabled and you allow the changes afterwards.

Since you've been surfing the net without an antivirus, it would be a good idea to do a couple of scans to make sure that there is nothing else hiding around:

Hi Rubi,

Thanks for the logs. Considering that you have no antivirus and no firewall, the logs are looking very good. AVG Anti Spyware did not find anything, not even some tracking cookies, unless you ran it twice and had it delete everything it found the first time. Kaspersky is flagging some files which we'll clean very soon. I still cannot see any antivirus or firewall installed. The AVG Anti Spyware is a spyware scanner. The same company also has the antivirus application, AVG Free, in case you thought that they were the same. Is there any special reason why you choose not to install antivirus and firewall?

Please go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the "Delete Cookies" button to clear all cookies.

==============================================
The service entries for Antivir and Norton are still there. We'll give it another try.We need to disable all your realtime scanners again so that they will not interfere with the fix and remember to allow any changes they may alert you to when you reboot.

To disable AVG Anti Spyware 7.5:

Open AVG Anti Spyware.
Under 'Status',click on "change status" to make it 'inactive'. Once your log is clean you can re-enable it.

===============================================

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button and when complete
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.
