Hello, i just ran hijackthis v. 1.99.1 on my friends comp. I have also ran adaware and spybot previous to scanning with this utility. They are recieving excess amounts of pop ups and have an additional banner at the top of thier internet explorer from time to time. can anyone help me out here? thanks… here's the log:

Download this tool: LQfix.zip
Unzip it to your Desktop.
Don't use it yet!

IMPORTANT! Reboot the computer into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').

Doubleclick LQfix.bat that you saved on your desktop before.
A doswindow will open and close again, that is normal.

Reboot into normal mode and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.

Scan with hijackthis and put a check beside these lines and choose FIX F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINNT\System32\Userinit.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ijrbbpd] C:\WINNT\ptcore.exe Then reboot and post a new log please.

ok, before i got your newest reply, i went into msconfig and took a few items off startup. one of the ones i took off was the second thing you told me to fix. thus on restart, it didnt appear on the new hijackthis scan. i deleted the other thing though. if necessary, ill recheck the other thing just to get rid of it if necessary. this is the new log after the fresh reboot:

well it seems like its running a bit faster… havent been gettin any popups either… looks like the problems could be solved for now.. thank you very much for all of your help. this site is amazing…

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. In my signature below is also a tutorial on how to harden IE, a good read and very helpful to stop these things in the future. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on.
