Hello,

Thanks in advance for your help. I've been trying to get rid of adware.ndotnet for Days. SpyBot cannot find it, nor does AdAware. Norton AntiVirus finds it but cannot get rid of it.

Here's the HiJackThis log.

Thanks again.

Stevan

Hello Stevan, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. I see no instance of New.net in this log. Where does Norton say it is located. That information is important. Run Norton again and post the exact name and location of anything it locates and can't remove. In the meantime, please do this:

You may not want to hear it but you need to get rid of the P2P software you are using. I took the time to post links for information and even one where you can find some safe files sharing software. I strongly suggest you use Add Remove programs to rid yourself of that problem.

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows then click on "Fix Checked"

Review the information in the following two links, then rid yourself of all Temp, TIF and Prefetch files.

Here is a good utility for you to try: http://www.ccleaner.com/
Empty the recycle bin and restart the computer. Stay in this thread and post a new log, along with any comments you have, and the information from the Norton scan.

Thanks…pskelley

Thank you for the help. I believe I followed the instructions properly, the offending entries seem to have disappeared and my computer still works properly, at least all the apps I've tried so far.

Also, I was able to get rid of the New.net instances that Norton was finding by using KillBox as recommended in another post on this site.

Thanks again for the help. I'll be anxious to see how this log looks to you.

Here's the new HiJack log:

===== end of log =====
Hello Stevan, I just want to mention that KillBox is a great tool but it must be used carefully. You appear to have been lucky as New.Net is Winsock hijacker and we will not even remove it with HijackThis because if not removed correctly it can damage your internet connection and it is hard to fix that I understand. Here are the instruction for removing New.net: http://www.newdotnet.com/removal.html and I would suggest you investigate carefully before removing anything with KillBox in the future.

Everything else in the log looks ok, since your original complaint was New.net and we managed to rid you of three really nasty DPF's your computer should be running much better. When you look at this information be sure to pay attention to the proper settings for your ActiveX items, as Netster and the like should not be able to even reach your computer.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

Thanks for taking a look at my shiny new HiJack log. Regarding the winsock problem, you are quite right, removing it the wrong way can mess things up big time. I followed the instructions on Symantec's site yet lost my net connection anyways. After a lengthy search, anything was better than reinstalling Windows, I came across several recommendations for a utility called WinsockxpFix.exe. I downloaded it, ran it, and was back in business in minutes. This utility works for Win2000 and WinXP. Again, thanks for your help.
I have seen it happen time after time. I usually suggest they download the fix on a floppy from another computer and take it to the one with the broken chain. This is the tool I suggest and a tutorial for using it if you even run into this again. Good Luck…pskelley

Take a look at some of Grinler's other tutorials. :)
