What's wrong?

Thanks
Hello dano2l and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
  • Disable Teatimer
    • You have Spybot S&D's Teatimer running which is good, but we need you to disable it for the remainder of the fix as it will interfere with the registry changes being made.
    • Open Spybot S&D in advanced mode, click Tools > Resident, and remove the check from "Resident Tea-Timer".
    • Reboot after unchecking the entry.
  • Be sure to re-enable this option again once the computer is clean.
  • Prepare CWShredder for use:
    • Download CWShredder.
    • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Prepare AboutBuster for use:
    • Download AboutBuster.
    • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
    • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
    • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
    • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
    • You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".
  • Prepare cwsserviceremove.reg for use:
    • Download cwsserviceremove.zip.
    • Unzip the contents of cwsserviceremove.zip (cwsserviceremove.reg) to your desktop.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
    • Click Start. Open My Computer.
    • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
    • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
    • Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
    • Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
    • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
  • Disable the offending service.
    • Go to Start->Run and type Services.msc then hit Ok
    • Scroll down and find the service called:Workstation NetLogon Service
    • When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you don´t find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.
  • Run CWShredder:
    • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
    • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
    • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
    • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
  • Remove the offending service:
    • Double-click on cwsserviceremove.reg you downloaded earlier.
    • When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click "Yes".
  • Run AboutBuster and save the logs:
    • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click OK at the directions prompt.
    • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
    • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
    • It will begin to your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
    • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I need a copy of it.
  • Fix with Hijackthis:
    • Open Hijackthis, Run a scan and check the following:

      R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\nmvqr.dll/sp.html#28129
      R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank

      O23 - Service: Workstation NetLogon Service ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\adddn.exe (file missing)
    • With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.
  • Delete the following files:
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\nmvqr.dll
    • C:\WINDOWS\vxzlc.dll
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\winly.dll
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\netoj32.exe
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysuh32.exe
    • C:\WINDOWS\adddn.exe
  • Clean out temporary files:
    • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
    • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
    • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
    • Click "OK" to remove them.
    • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
  • Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.
  • Free TrendMicro Housecall scan:
    • Vist the TrendMicro Housecall website.
    • Select your country from the drop-down list and click "Go".
    • Choose "Yes" at the ActiveX Security Warning prompt.
    • Please wait while the Housecall engine is updated.
    • Select the drives to be scanned by placing a check in their respective boxes.
    • Check the "Auto Clean" box.
    • Click "SCAN" in order to begin scanning your system.
    • Please be patient while Housecall scans your system for malicious files.
    • If not auto-cleaned, remove anything it finds.
    • Click "Close" to exit the Housecall scanner.
    • Choose "Yes" at the HouseCall message prompt.
  • Prepare your reply:
    • Please post a fresh HijackThis log
    • Please post the AboutBuster log.
    • Please note any complications you had.
Thanks! You're the greatest.

Before I could do all of this I had to perform a system restore because I screwed up a file or something and the "my computer" links stopped working.

I made it all the way to #4 under "Boot into Safe Mode" but the files are different, so I couldn't check anything.

Here are the new AboutBuster and Hijack This logs:

Can you give it another shot?

Thanks!

-Dan
The main problem is not showing in the log anymore. :)
Please continue with the rest of the previous fix (steps 6-8) than add the following steps afterwards.

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [javaaq.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\javaaq.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [netau32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\netau32.exe

O16 - DPF: {10000000-1000-0000-1000-000000000000} - file://C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\hkrbqhhf.exe

Optional items to check with HijackThis for improved performance.

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Please set your computer to show all files.

* Double-click My Computer.
* Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.
* Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
* Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
* Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 3
Please delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\javaaq.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\netau32.exe

If you have any problem deleting these files, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 4
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread. Please make sure that there are no items onchecked in msconfig or stopped from starting with a startup manager.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Excellent. I'm going to be out of town for a week, but my friend is going to give it a shot. If she has any problems it'll have to wait until I get back, so don't think you did all that work for nothing if you don't hear from me for a few days. Actually, my grandfather is having problems with his computer, so I may have a second log to post in a few days… Thanks again! -Dan
Go ahead and post a new log when you get back and I'll look it over. Please post the log for your Grandfathers computer in a new thread and someone will be happy to look it over for you.
This is driving me nuts.

For some reason, the TredMicro Housecall page crashed explorer, so I downloaded Netscape to see if that would work. It didn't appear to load, so I downloaded the 30 day trial of PC-cillin.

It found something under the spyware search (but nothing under the virus scan) so I cleaned that out and rebooted.

I ran cwshredder again which found nothing.
I then ran aboutbuster and saved the log (posted below).
I did another hijack this scan and saved that log (posted below) .
As soon as I opened up explorer to post this PC-cillin found this:

Troj Winshow.T
Troj mitglider.K
Troj dloader.ge

C:\windows\system 32\jdj16.dll
C:\windows\nsreg.dat:zsvhfg
c:\windows\_default_fu spam.pif:kmmafb
c:\windows\q329170.log:gxmdus
c:\windows\nettf32.exe
c:\windows\system32\winup.exe

and the scan found these:
adw_search (something).A (I can't read my writing…)
spyw_twant.c

I quarantined and deleted, but is pretty much the same infection that started this whole thing. Help!

The About:Blank has re-surfaced. :(

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
    • Delete the cwsserviceremove.zip folder.
    • Scroll down and find the service called : Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper << There are two similar named services, be sure to fix the correct one.

      R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.earthlink.net/partner/more/msie…ton/search.html
      R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank

    • Click "OK" to remove them.
    • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
  • Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.
  • Free Online Antivirus scan:
    • You'll need to use Internet Explorer or Netscape browsers to run this scan.
    • Run at least two of the following online virus scans making sure to reboot in between each one. Allow them to fix anything they find.
      Bitdefender
      Pandasoftware
Trend Micro << Click Auto Clean
Symantec Security Check << click scan for viruses
RAV Online Virus Scanner << Enter your e-mail address and click on To continue without subscribing
      McAfee
Enter your e-mail address and click on To continue without subscribing
    • McAfee
  • Prepare your reply:
    • Please post a fresh HijackThis log as a reply to this thread.
    • Please post the AboutBuster log.
    • Please note any complications you had.
Please please please tell me it's gone…

Just so you know, I screwed up and accidentally ran the aboutbuster program before updating it and then I didn't save the log. I believe it cleaned something, but I didn't catch exactly what it was.

I ran the first three online virus scans (trendmicro now works!) and they caught stuff, so hopefully this thing is cleaned up.

Thanks again,

Your new log is clean. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
4. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

MOST IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and IE to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is on the internet.
I recommend going to the following link and update to SP2. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer.
Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates

Here is a great link that explains the procedure for updating to SP2 with less complications (scroll down to the second post).

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

AVG AntiVirus - Free antivirus program if you currently are not using one.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Here are three very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3
AdAware SE v1.05
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D; and Adaware SE
A2 Squared

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
Your welcome. Glad the computer is working better now. :)
