jconnellaz, Apologies for the delay in responding. The workload on this forum is intense, and sometimes it is not possible to respond to every inquiry. If you are still suspect having malware related problems, it is best to have the latest 'picture' of your PC. Please run HijackThis again, and, making sure all windows and browsers are closed, Scan. Do not fix any of the entries reported. Just post the new log to this thread by using the Add Reply button. I will be notified of your reply, and will be glad to assist you. Thank you.

Thanks for your time and help

Jim
jconellaz,

Please proceed as follows:

Make sure all windows and browsers are closed before proceeding to run HijackThis and Scan. Fix the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting the: ‘Fix Checked’ button:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://find.searchingtheweb.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://find.searchingtheweb.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0000607D-D204-42C7-8E46-216055BF9918} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: mwsBar BHO - {07B18EA1-A523-4961-B6BB-170DE4475CCA} - (no file)

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2CDE1A7D-A478-4291-BF31-E1B4C16F92EB} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Uninstall_WinTools] C:\WINDOWS\Temp\WTuninst.exe /remove
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinTools] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsA.exe

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsearch.com/menusearch.html?p=ZNxdm797

Other entries to consider for removal:
O4 - Global Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe
The entry above is the subject of some controversy, and is considered an optional fix. The dubious PowerReg installs with certain products and is identified as a registration scheduler from Leader Technologies. It periodically attempts to ‘phone home‘, and gather unknown information. It is a good idea to remove it also.

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
On the above entry, if:
>You are not using the Immunize feature of Spybot Search and Destroy
>You did not place this restriction
>A system administrator did not place the restriction in place
Then, remove it (check it and use: Fix checked).

Next, enable the viewing of Hidden Files and Folders as follows:
-At your Desktop, go to Start>My Computer
-Select the Tools menu and then Folder Options
-After the new window appears select the View tab
-Select: Display the contents of system folders
-Under the Hidden files and folders section select: Show hidden files and folders
-Remove the checkmark from Hide file extensions for known file types
-Remove the checkmark from Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
-Press the Apply button
Click OK

Then, reboot into Safe Mode as follows:
-Restart your computer.
-When the machine first starts again, tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
-Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
-Press Enter to boot into Safe Mode.

Please search for and delete the following file (bold):
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm

Search for and delete the following folder (bold):
C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools

Clean up Temporary Internet Files, Temporary Files, and the Recycle Bin.
Use the Disk Cleanup utility, as follows:
-Click Start>Run
-In the Open box, key in: cleanmgr
-Click: OK
-In the Disk Cleanup tab, Files to Delete, place a check next to the categories mentioned above
-Click OK
-Click: Yes to proceed with the action

Also in the Disk Cleanup dialogue, select the More Options tab.
In the Installed Programs area, press: Clean Up
Take a look at all the programs, and clean out any that you did not purposely install, or no longer need.

Finally, go to Control Panel>Internet Options.
Click on the Programs tab, then click: Reset Web Settings
Click Apply, then OK.

Reboot to Normal mode.

When done with all of the above, close all windows and browsers, run HijackThis, Scan, and post a new HijackThis log.

If you encounter any problems with the steps above, please describe what happened in your next post.

Thank you.
Any invisible problems yet?

Thanks for your time.

jconnellaz, It seems we have two logs on the thread belonging to different computers. As soon as we get done with the one containing this entry: C:\Documents and Settings\Phillips Kids\Desktop\Hijack\HijackThis.exe (Calling it Log 1) we'll take a look at the other. Thank you for your understanding. How is it going with the instructions?

Thanks for your help.

jconnellaz,

On the following entry, don't know if it is an oversight:

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Don't think you are using the Immunize feature of Spybot Search and Destroy, or that a system administrator placed the restriction.

Did you place the restriction? If you did not, remove it (check it in HijackThis, and use: Fix checked).

Otherwise, the log looks good to go.

At one point you enabled the viewing of Hidden Files and Folders as follows:
[Start>My Computer, select the Tools menu and then Folder Options, after the new window appears select the View tab…]
This time select the following button: Restore Defaults
Select: Apply, and click OK

Next, since the system is now clean, let's clear out the existing Restore Points in XP System Restore, and create a new Restore Point:

To clear existing restore points:
-Go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools
-Select: System Restore
-Select: Turn off System Restore on all Drives
-Click Apply
-When warned that all existing Restore Points will be deleted, select: Yes
Restart the computer.

Now, create a Restore Point:
-Go to: Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools
-Select: System Restore
-In the System Restore wizard, select: Create a Restore Point
-Click the Next button.
-Type a description for the restore point, like: Clean Slate (or whatever you like)
-Click Create
Restart the computer.

Will get back with you on the log with the AOL connection.
jconellaz,

Log number 2 with the AOL connection.

They appear on some Compaq/HP computers. If you want to lose them, have HijackThis safely fix these. They are not malware.

Do remove the following, it is an orphaned entry:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

Otherwise, the log looks fine.

As you have found out by the problems you had in the first log we worked on, nowadays, not only do we need to be concerned about viruses, but also about a multitude of non-viral threats!

An excellent reference in developing a plan of defense is Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place': http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?showtopic=3051
Don't come out empty handed!!
Its information provides some very useful tools and their links.

Complementing Tony Klein’s list, AdAware SE: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
And, Spybot Search and Destroy: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html
are excellent programs that you can use as part of a plan to counteract malware. Update the programs to obtain their latest reference files, and run them on a regular basis.

Clean up Temporary Internet Files, Temporary Files, and the Recycle Bin periodically, using the cleanmgr Disk Cleanup utility.

Visit Microsoft’s Windows Update website, and have the system scanned:
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5co…t.aspx?ln=en-us
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and Internet Explorer.

Last, but not least, make sure your AntiVirus and Firewall programs are kept updated and run regularly.

Thank you for your patience, and performing all the procedures requested.
If you have any questions or comments, post back. Otherwise…

Good luck, jconnellaz!! :wavey:
